Broadway the Hard Way: Phillies at Yankees Game Thread, May 23, 2009

Philadelphia Phillies at New York Yankees, May 23, 2009 4:10 PM EDT

Congratulations, JA Happ, and welcome to the starting rotation.  Your first assignment?  Oh, FOX Game of the Week.  In New York.  Against the Yankees.  Hi buddy!

Oh, and welcome to the bigs, John Mayberry!  You wanna debut against the Yankees?  Go get 'em!

The Phillies go for two in a row against the New York Yankees and veteran lefty Andy Pettitte this afternoon in the Bronx.  He'll be opposed by the above mentioned JA Happ in his first start of 2009.

Platoon-wise, the Yankees would appear to have the advantage the rest of the series, as their right-handed hitting is that much stronger than the Phillies.  The Phillies will attempt to tip the scales a bit by sending John Mayberry Jr., recently called up from AAA Lehigh Valley, out to right field, shifting Jayson Werth to left and taking Raul Ibanez out of the field to serve as today's designated hitter.  Probably not the worst idea, it's pretty hot and he could use the "rest."

Discuss the game below.

Ken Rosenthal just said that the Phillies are going after Jason Marquis. Please god don’t let this happen. Difficult to see how this would not make our rotation worse, much less better.

Similar pitchers career-wise though. Painfully league average…which I guess would be better than the league-worst we are getting from Blanton+Moyer.

I agree – I just have no idea how voters will react. You would think they’d pick him for one of the outfield slots based on his performance. It could be a case of whether there are enough other “names” like Manny Ramirez who come to mind first.

it would be an utter travesty if he is voted to start.. and i’m not even talking about the suspension… i’m talking that only playing 30 or so games when everyone else plays 80 or so, there’s no way his stats should compare

Not so worried about the score cause that’s not under his control – more about his control and such…there was an article this week about Happ and his curve ball since for some reason he hadn’t thrown it much (if at all) this season in his relief appearances – so i’m curios as to how his pitches have looked – his location – especially the curves and how he’s handled any high pressure moments.

leadoff hitter

If the slider bounces away in that situation, who cares?

I am guessing

but alot has been made of Ruiz and his catching w/ Lidge. Ruiz was not here at the beginning.

But, who knows, trying to analyze something that probably can’t be done.

I am not an expert, just a fan.

which brings up another point

Between coste and werth, they did not help us.

You know, if they still thought stress caused ulcers, I’d say something about giving yoruself an ulcer, but newer research cleared that all up, so basically, just calm down

"Someone created the box score," Morey says, "and he should be shot."

Blocked shots — they look great, but unless you secure the ball afterward, you haven’t helped your team all that much.

Phantom DL time?

Time for Lidge to take a trip to the DL for 15 days for a phantom injury?

The way FOX was talking he’s been dealing with something all year and has to wear special shoe or something

Happ had a nice outing, strong showing from Mayberry…the phils need to face reality with Lidge, but tomorrows another game and the phils will still be in first place.

Because the yankees won, the scoring on Damon was recored as a stolen base

I thought Damon’s “stolen base” was defensive indifference. Is that considered the same thing?

by soman319 on May 23, 2009 7:27 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t believe so – I don’t believe defensive indifference scores as a stolen bse does it?

not suppose to count as a stolen base

that is why I asked why above. Does not make sense unless they are tying to stuff the ….

Wow. Fuckin’ A. Lidge, what the hell man?

by FuquaManuel on May 23, 2009 7:19 PM EDT reply actions

Can someone explain to me why Lidge is still the closer and/or not on the DL?

by FuquaManuel on May 23, 2009 7:20 PM EDT reply actions

Same reason it took so damn long to put Happ in the rotation and take Park out.

What about Rollins? How would you say Cholly’s timing was when he dropped him out of the top spot?

by JasonB on May 23, 2009 7:24 PM EDT up reply actions

I didn’t agree with Chan Ho in the rotation, but after two solid starts and then one lowsy one, they pulled him. Was actually pretty quick in my book.

Blanton and Moyer are another story.

For Who? My teammates.

For What? To Win.

lol that was one of the worst car rides i've had in a long time..

I unfortunately had to drop someone off somewhere so I had to listen to the radio for the 8th and the 9th. Man the 9th inning was something else, I never almost been in as many accidents than today. The radio announcer said it best, Lidge’s everything (era, walks, etc) are unusually high for a closer. That said, Lidge should take a little rest since we have Madson to fill in for him until he gets back on the ball or healthy again if that’s bothering him.
