Then there's a left-hander who is climbing everybody's charts, Antonio Bastardo, who has a 50-9 strikeout-walk ratio between Double-A and Triple-A. The Phillies dangled Bastardo in July for Rockies reliever Brian Fuentes. But a year later, he is actually drawing some Johan Santana comparisons, and might have passed Carrasco as their No. 1 pitching prospect.

ulterior motive

I have to admit I’m at least partially rooting for this guy to make it big so I can walk around with a BASTARDO t-shirt.

bastardo and outman would have made a whole of a ‘duo’

"Someone created the box score," Morey says, "and he should be shot."

Blocked shots — they look great, but unless you secure the ball afterward, you haven’t helped your team all that much.

Much better than having pitchers named Walk, Homer, and Balfour.

I’m am more than pissed we gave away a guy named ‘Outman.’

True – probably should have kept him and not traded for blanton – that backfired horribly

I answered “Bastardo” in that poll question on BSG about which minors pitcher is closest to ready, so yeah, given the Myers news… even if the “four lefties” thing is a little strange. But the one strikeout in the start today is shocking from him—he typically racks up about one per inning.

by dajafi on May 28, 2009 6:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Do we have a timetable on this guy? He seems to have been in the excellent-dominant range in most of the levels he has pitched at and he is 23 years old…so he is not THAT young.

Why not dump Eyre (who seems cooked) and Trashner when JC comes back and bring up Bastardo as the 2nd lefty out of the pen and then let him compete for a rotation spot next spring?

Maybe they should sell high. I’ve never seen Li’l Bastard pitch, but I always heard he didn’t have good enough secondary pitches to make it as a starter. At some point, though, the results have to outweigh assessments of the stuff, right?

by dajafi on May 28, 2009 6:13 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m not doubting that he’s pitching well – but much like ’don’t over react to raul ibanez’ and people calling him the MVP on ESPN – I think you’re still working on the small sample size / league adjusting thing aren’t you? I’d say yo’d have to give him half a season, and multiple games against the same lineups before he can get santana comparisons?

It just seems like the minors, more than most, often suffer the sample size ignored curse…if he’s doing this at the same right at the all start break – 5:1 K:BB ratio – that’s great (not to be a smart ass, but how many innings has he pitched and hits he’s given up?)

I see what you are saying. But the dude has racked up a decent number of innings (about 100) at every level except AAA so far and he has been excellent at every level so far.

Then he wasn’t good enough for Brian Fuentes because?

I’m not denying it’s an excellent start, but we all know the ‘pitching prospect’ saying…i mean no need to gavin floyd him now that myers is hurt for instance

I believe it’s partly because of his lack of height and partly because of certain judgments that people have made about his “stuff.”

I have no personal opinion on Bastardo, but it seems to me that he’s rated where he is in baseball primarily because of scout-driven, as opposed to stat-driven, judgments. How one rates Bastardo would, I think, depend on where one lands on the spectrum between those two modes of analysis.

by taco pal on May 28, 2009 6:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Be great if he was sanatna like i’m sure – but i’m trying not to get too excited after cole hamels being really the only ’he’s gonna be great’ prospect to really cme through (pitching wise) in a while – it seems no matter how much these guys get hyped they are ending up milddle of the rotation guys (which would be great right now since we got cole hamels and no one else) but i think comparing him to one of the best currently pitching is just insanity

Well, not even Stark is saying that he or anyone else sees Bastardo as Santana’s equal. All he said was that Bastardo is “actually drawing some Santana comparisons” which is a much more modest statement. He doesn’t specify what the comparisons are. Maybe they’re just in regard to a particular attribute. Who knows.

I don’t doubt that equating Bastardo with a young Santana is unrealistic, but there’s a wide chasm between “the next Santana” and “someone who isn’t worth getting too excited about.” And since no one’s saying the first thing anyway, I don’t see what the point is in trying to disprove it.

I just don’t get excited about pitching prospects in general – just too much bad history with the phillies – it’s not worth the strain

Jerry Crasnick – who i’ve always found reasonable said that the first solution should be bringing up the bastard son and seeing what he can do
