has he been pitching in the pen in the minors and i missed it?

Blocked shots — they look great, but unless you secure the ball afterward, you haven’t helped your team all that much.

Kyle who?
For Who? My teammates.
For What? To Win.
How Much? Where do I sign?

That’s a head scratcher. Kendrick hasn’t been pitching terribly, but the point of him going to the minors was to focus on development, not to set up an immediate return. Won’t sending him back to the majors for two weeks just to do mop-up work set him back? I know Mike Koplove and Tyler Walker aren’t on the 40-man, but still.

Unless of course (and here’s the nightmare thought I had) kendrick is up for 2 weeks to start while happ returns to the bullpen

Or Bastardo to the pen.

That could still be bad for Kendrick’s development, and it would also have the drawback of making our rotation worse. Both Happ and Bastardo are pitching pretty well.

Agreed. I am all for giving Happ and (especially) Bastardo starts until they prove otherwise that they aren’t fit for a ML rotation.
I don’t know if Kendrick has ever developed the ‘out’ pitch that he will need for ML survival.

I didn’t say it was a good idea – i just said it was something that occured to me as the ‘worst possible outcome’

Yep. I think this is right. I think Bastardo is going to be moved to the pen and Kendrick inserted into the rotation. My bold prediction: he is going to get shelled for a few starts and sent back down after maybe 3 or 4 turns.
He hasn’t exactly been doing anything in the minors to suggest he is any more capable of getting major league hitters out.

And then bastardo will have missed 3 or 4 turns so he’ll have to be ‘stretched’ out again
thus making it worse.
Yeah that sounds about right don’t it?
Seriously – find a useless vet on the scrap heap – sign him to a minimum deal – maybe he works out like romero – or maybe you DFA him after two weeks

I don’t think we should jump to any conclusions here until we actually hear from Manuel or Amaro. They don’t really need to move another lefty into the bullpen in place of Eyre since Romero’s back.

Hey my nicknam isn’t eeyore for nothing pal :)
We aren’t jumping to conclusions we’re playing the worst case scenario out to its inevitable depressing end
And then – when something better happens we aren’t disappointed
it worked when i was in college – i assumed i failed every exam

6 man rotation? Keep the two inexperienced guys, and the one really old guy fresher?
I really don’t want Happ or Bastardo out of the rotation unless they do something to deserve it. Maybe if we acquired a legit starter, but not for the likes of Kendrick.
That being said, I have the feeling its Bastardo the pen, which is a bad idea, in my opinion. I think he can be great there, but why mess with your (effective) starting pitching?

Amaro is on DNL right now and says KK is strictly up here for long relief. Neither Carpenter nor Escalona were available, he says, and that KK has been throwing well of late.
That’s per Amaro. Don’t shoot the messenger.

Maybe a final tryout?
This is somewhat unrelated, but I think Jimmy Rollins is continuing to hit in the lead off because he is so much more valuable there than he would be in the six spot, so long as he stops slumping. Because of their position in the East and the relative weakness of other teams, the Phillies can afford to make moves for the long term instead of the short term, ie, letting Rollins work out his problems in the lead off spot, and this, perhaps giving Kendrick another go at starting, or even just at being a bull pen guy.
If it doesnt work, oh well, the Phillies drop a game or 2 maybe, but if it does work, it could be really helpful in the long run.
