Put it this way: I’ll cut video of anything remotely interesting and have only found one segment in the show’s history worthy of a blog post.

For the most part, it’s snoozers. I think you can watch it on myphl17.com though.

I have made some sort of peace with Charlie, but if I never have to hear him talk again it would be fine by me.

Don’t mess with that guy. He might know people.

Nice article about Madson and Gordon.

In the history of mistreated Philadelphia athletes, Gordon might come in at #1 alltime. Lots of Philadelphia fans try to justify booing by saying it’s appropriate for players who give less than their best effort. Their treatment of Gordon greatly undermines that explanation for that behavior. Gordon wasn’t very good towards the end because he was old and hurt, but in late 2007, when he wasn’t fully healed from an injury, he came back early – probably too early – and gutted out a great stretch run, without which we wouldn’t have caught the Mets. It’s possible that doing this cost him his health in 2008 and, considering his age, maybe the rest of his career. His thanks for that was to get booed mercilessly for his entire final season with the Phils, from the moment he would run in from the bullpen to the moment he left the game. It was really terrible.

I'll second that

His arm was likely already ruined by the time he got here from his stint with the Yankees, but he pitched well enough to be an All-Star in his first season and still had the brains to know how to pitch even without his best stuff to help us in 2007. He was likely a huge influence on Myers as well when he jumped into the role of closer. He gets a bad rap. It’s not like he was Adam Eaton out there. I don’t know if I would say he’s the most mistreated all-time, but he’s up there.

Yeah “most mistreated” was overheated. Let’s say the worst in recent years.

first half 2006

His first half of 2006 was also awesome… he outpitched Wagner for that stretch. He was a soldier while he was here and deserves respect.

Utley

The thing that’s so fascinating about these puff pieces about Utley and his grittiness is that he plays like a friggin’ robot. Yes, a very good robot who gets dirty, but he shows very little emotion and doesn’t look like he’s having fun out there, which are two things Philly fans usually demand from a player. But, he’s white and intense, so I guess he gets a pass.

+1

Same demeanor as Abreu, similar numbers, completely different fan reception.

There’s something to that. Counterexample is Schmidt, of course.

Talk about rebuilding the system

Draybek and Savery are looking unbelievably good, they should be in the rotation in a few more years.

That’s an overly optimistic view.

At one point carrasco was going to be in the rotation in a ‘few more years’ and now seems to be not so much – last year bastardo wasn’t on the map and now was one of the best phils pitchers in the upper minors (even better than carrasco) as this season started….projecting pitching prospects is kind of like predicting lottery numbers i think

"Someone created the box score," Morey says, "and he should be shot."

Blocked shots — they look great, but unless you secure the ball afterward, you haven’t helped your team all that much.

I wouldn’t get too down on Carrasco just yet. He’s still plenty young enough to rebound, plus even with his struggles this year, he’s still striking people out.

by taco pal on Jun 16, 2009 4:08 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

What I said was a couple years ago – carrasco was the ‘big name’ who was going to make a splash and now people are worried about him – for whatever reason he’s not pitching as well as he was – getting excited about guys in low A ball – drabek especially (since he’s behind on his progression) strikes me as overly optimistic and talking about ‘rebuilding’ the system – the phillies still are pretty weak on positional players across the board and the ‘strength’ they had in catching doesn’t seem to be as strong any more for some reason.

What I said was that getting excited about pitching prospects a couple years off – or projecting them – seems unrealistic and pinning your hope on it to ‘rebuild your system’ as much so

"Someone created the box score," Morey says, "and he should be shot."

Drabek isn’t in low A ball. He’s at AA now. I don’t think its unreasonable to assume that he could be with the major league club in some capacity by next June or July (some have projected him as a late inning bullpen type, but that was before he started to ascend through the farm system).

by FuquaManuel on Jun 16, 2009 5:02 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The original poster slotted them both in the rotation in a few more years – and like Cohen man said

"Someone created the box score," Morey says, "and he should be shot."

Yeah, I am not sure about Savery — I have my doubts.

But if all goes well (and that is indeed a big if) I think Drabek could be in the rotation as early as next season. But you are also right that he could face difficulties like Carrasco. Echoing taco pal, though, give Carrasco time…his numbers aren’t as ugly as they appear this season and he is still young, so he could still wind up being the #3 or 4 starter that many were projecting him as last year.

by FuquaManuel on Jun 16, 2009 5:08 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Oh I’m not giving up on carrasco he was just a case study in the ’let’s not get too excited too soon’ department :)

Really just should have said that but it seemed so trite and condescending that I tried to be more explicit in what i meant …silly me

Savery?

Right now he looks like Gavin Floyd at best.

I agree on Drabek, though I think he’s much closer than “a few more years.”

By the way, you know who might have been a really astute under-the-radar dumpster pickup? Gustavo Chacin, who’s pitching well for LV right now. You can’t hope to get lucky more than once with a Jayson Werth-style pickup, but Chacin really does kind of remind me of Werth in some ways. Onetime legit prospect. Had success his rookie year in the majors. Got injured and fell on hard times. But he had real talent at one time, and if he could somehow overcome his injuries, maybe we could end up getting something for nothing. He’s still pretty young.

by taco pal on Jun 16, 2009 4:12 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

i wonder if the phils are ‘luckier’ than most on this – though werths issues always were one of injury not talent – but werth, victorino, hell romero was on the scrap heap as well…

If you cast your nets wide, it increases your chances. They also picked up Rodrigo Lopez who was once an ok pitcher for Baltimore, but he’s pitching poorly. They’ve picked tons of guys in Rule 5 over the years, so to get one Victorino out of it isn’t so shocking.

by taco pal on Jun 16, 2009 4:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

that al depends on the success rate of rule 5’s in general percentage wise i would think

i still think the ‘coolest’ scrap heap pick up is josh hamilton – yeah he’s not a hero – but it’s still a nice story

How could anyone not root for this guy? He looks like a villain from a James Bond movie.
