Wow, one third of Rays fans who voted in the FSN ‘interactive poll’ blamed the weather for the Phillies winning the World Series.

Baseball is obviously meant to be played under controlled weather conditions, like it is in St. Pete.

And on an artificial surface that cannot be eaten by Dick Allen’s horses or smoked by Tug McGraw.

If we sweep the Rays and Jays we end up .500 for interleague play!
For Who? My teammates.
For What? To Win.
How Much? Where do I sign?
And THAT would really be the accomplishment of the season thus far.

Terrible AB from the Big Man. Waved at an outside pitch without even stepping toward it.

Kevin Kennedy is repeating the ‘bandbox’ meme about CBP. I guess he has never read the park factor numbers showing the relative neutrality of the Bank.

He works for FOX :)
"Someone created the box score," Morey says, "and he should be shot."
Blocked shots — they look great, but unless you secure the ball afterward, you haven’t helped your team all that much.

Pretty nasty change from Cookies to get Zobrist.

You think we should start mentioning Garza’s no-hitter good pitching?
The Sports Wilderness - Sports With An Enemies List!
Really….after three straight walks, Werth swings at the first farkin’ pitch.
The Sports Wilderness - Sports With An Enemies List!
I am sick and tired of Werth batting. I don’t believe we have a worse clutch hitter other than Jroll on this team. Why are we not DH him and let Joe hit for himself. I cannot imagine he could do worse! Do you?
Yes, I do, there is no such thing as clutch and you are speaking completely on emotion with no real rational thought behind it.

There is such a thing as clutch, but not such a thing as ‘clutchiness’ – something that a lot of people will conflate.

In all seriousness, though, I think ‘clutch’ is more than just mere luck. But I will certainly concede that it is a retroactive manner of describing a particular event that contributed to a good outcome.

Getting the hit takes skill. Being in the situation to get a “clutch” hit takes luck.

Agreed, but I am also saying that it is the observer who makes the declaration of ‘clutch’ rather than the participant himself.

Over the course of an entire season, the sample size of measures of “clutchness” — or like the reviled GWRBI or more respected measures such as avg/obp/ops with RISP in late innings — is significant enough for most starters to separate the all-stars from the roster fillers. So yes, there is luck, but there is something else going on when guys continue to be tough outs, to get big hits, even for bad teams with lousy team OBP.

Until someone starts attaching electrodes to peoples heads during ‘clutch’ situations to dtermine any kind of ‘mental make up’ difference it’s just going to be some sort of vague thing…you can’t measure anyones mental approach not really – and i would think any idea of ‘clutchness’ would be a mental approach during the ‘higher leveraged’ situations or how the mind responds

I just went over to Fangraphs to see the valley. It literally had dropped to even after Howard’s walk, and then shot up to even greater probability of a Rays win after Werth-less’ godawful DP

Other than one grooved fastball to Pat, Blanton has pitched a very good game.

And speaking of clutch, here comes Mr. Pop-Up Fresh, with the fly out trifecta – foul out, pop up (inf), line drive (of). The pop fly cycle is to the warning track.
I do recall that last week he actually bunted, successfully, for a hit down the third base line.
I think he actually walked once or twice too.

Does Charlie not realize that Blanton has to pitch in September, too?
WTF? Why send him out there for the eighth?

Yeah, but...
…the folks at BP like to say that the pendulum has shifted too far the other direction with respect to pitch counts right now, and this was a good example.
Sure, Blanton was on 115 pitches, but he wasn’t laboring, he’d just had an easy inning, and was pitching very well. He’s not 22 years old — he can go more than 130 pitches under the right circumstances.
Well, Charlie obviously is reading TGP
A little late though, chuckles.

..its by some dumb infield fuck up then the next batter gets a big hit
Jelly Roll’s mental lapse is worth the benching, in addition to his .210 average.
The Sports Wilderness - Sports With An Enemies List!
what the f is wrong with Romero and the walks?
After this, the Phils will be up 1.5 games with the worst pitching staff in the league. One thing I’ve learned over the past three years is to never count this team out.

Jimmy....
I really feel like his career is over, hes full of himself ever since he had his “MVP” season. Thing is, they won’t be able to get much for him, and I know there’s no chance they will trade him. I just hope Jason Donald comes back strong from his injury and really proves hes as good as hes suppose to be.
Sunshine
happiness and ….
oh wait, we lost. Well, I always try and look at the bright side of things, and the bright side tonight is that Blanton pitched pretty well, we basicaly lost to Pat the Bat (well good for him I guess) and the guys were relatively patient and had good at bats.
Another high point was the outfield defense. Damn them Werth catches were awesome. Victorino had a nice catch as well.
It really stings that the lowly Mets beat the Cardinals, but that is the way things go.
As far as the Rollins career is over silliness, I would suggest reading a bunch of Mets posts about D Wright, Reyes or perhaps even Beltran and then you will realize how idiotic that is!
It is a loss and it sucks but lets be real for half a second. We are 1/1/2 games ahead of the Mets and most of our bull pen is crying from pain.
Bold Predictions:
Phillies win NL East, beat dodgers in NL (final thing), go to WS and win against the Oakland A’s (haha)
