Evil Ways: Phillies at Mets Game Thread, June 9, 2009.
Philadelphia Phillies at New York Mets, Jun 9, 2009 7:10 PM EDT
The Battle for New Jersey continues tonight in Flushing as the Phillies at Mets kick off a three game set at ShCiti Field.
Tonight, by nearly all accounts, it's Advantage: Mets, as King of the Universe Johan Santana goes against the Phillies' JA Happ, who's been no slouch himself. Despite a lineup and bullpen decimated by injuries, Santana is the kind of pitcher who wins games all by himself. Santana, for his part, will be hoping that the patchwork offense behind him can scratch together more runs than he normally gets.
Discuss the game below.

With Santana on the mound, it’s unlikely. But it also makes this game more fun to watch because if they lose, what did you expect? But if they win it would be a coup.

Only ex-Phillies and their former prospects can do that, apparently.

Sharp inning from Happ….not as sharp as Santana, but then, the Met hitters were a little less inclined to swing at crap early in the count.

Unfortunately, you may be right. With the sucktitude shown so far by the lineup, 1-0 may be all that is needed.

Mets hitters are giving the Phillies a lesson in good ABs.
by FuquaManuel on Jun 9, 2009 7:37 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Santana is on a pretty strict pitch count so that he’ll ‘last’ through out the season and the mets bullpen isn’t really that good – even before putz got hurt.
If the batters get smarter and make santana throw a few and they can get to the pen…

Brad Lidge couldn’t get out of the 9th against the 7, 8 and 9 hitters so I’ll give Happ credit for doing what you’re supposed to do against the bottom of a lineup. I think that if we can force Santana out of the game by the 6th then we stand a good chance of winning. If he goes deep into the game then it’s going to be a problem.

exactly, this is ridiculous. how come whenever we do well against a team in a game we shouldn’t be ahead in (ex: hitting 3 homers off of santana) our bullpen always seems to throw it away. 4 of lidge’s 6 blown saves were against LA and NYY, unbelievable condrey.

Yup – he’s appreciated everywhere but Philadlephia – it’s evidenced by the fact that he asked to be traded, and the GM tried to trade him and no team wanted him.
Plus his dismissal from the Canadian Olympic team.
“Disdain’ for a mediocre over paid player who has never bothered to learn the basic fundamentals of basketball – i don’t see why one wouldn’t have disdain for him…the sixers don’t want him, he doesn’t want the sixers, and yet STILL no one makes an offer worth trading him for…seems the disdain might be league wide

Yeah, but those fans don’t really care what else is on – they’re going to watch hockey – and it’s not like the finals teams are big tv markets and the concept of ‘casual viewers’ and hockey sounds a little wrong to me…seriously – i thought all the cup games were going to be on versus

Yeah, as a casual fan, the NHL is the bottom of the list of things to watch tonight. I’d like to point out that the NHL playoffs are pretty wild. When I was watching the Flyers-Pens series, I was jumping up and down yelling with my friends who are legitimate hockey fans

Six Runs is an explosion for them, and they did it with Santana on the mound. I presume Rollins will move back to the top of the lineup soon. Right now every regular start, maybe with the exception of Werth, is swinging the bat well. The Phils got Cole tomorrow!
