Thegoodphight.com was started by a group of five Philadelphia Phillies fans who met on a message board and grew tired of fellow fans berating the team’s players.

Thanks goodness you never have to deal with that anymore!

Thank, not thanks. We need an edit function around here.

You know how editors can get to stories and chew them up a bit. I think it looked a lot prettier originally, if not, that’s our story and we are sticking to it.

Zolecki reports that Rodrigo Lopez will be pitching on Friday.

by taco pal on Jul 1, 2009 4:24 PM EDT reply actions

“The Phillies have RHP Rodrigo Lopez starting Friday night against the Mets at Citizens Bank Park. That’s a no-go for Carrasco or Carpenter.”

- Zo’s Twitter

I’m curious as to the reasoning behind this selection.

Possible trade of Carrasco in coming weeks?

by doubleh on Jul 1, 2009 5:13 PM EDT up reply actions

If that were the case, I would think they would want to showcase him in the majors.

More likely, they just think they can Lopez is likely to perform just about as well as Carrasco or Carpenter would in the short term, without having to worry about developmental effects or stuff like that.

by taco pal on Jul 1, 2009 5:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, you don’t want to showcase him and then have him fail, thus lowering trade value. Watching DNL now and Looper was on saying Carrasco has just begun throwing a slider, which is not perfected yet.

I think they just brought up Lopez because he has MLB experience and if he fails, no big deal, like you said.

Maybe it’s the DL trip? They were fine with carrasco for one start…but if it’s going to be 2 (possibly/probably more) they want someone else?

Maybe. I’m actually curious to see how Lopez does. This isn’t exactly a Paul Abbott situation. Lopez was pitching quite well lately in AAA, and he had decent seasons in the majors in 2002, 2004, and 2007. He missed the second half of 2007 and all of 2008 with Tommy John, which is why he had no value to anyone this offseason. There’s at least a decent possibility that he’ll be a find.

“Decent possibility” is probably a little too strong. Let’s just say it isn’t totally implausible. I wouldn’t have that much more confidence in Carrasco at this stage, although the risk/reward thing would clearly be greater.

Awesome

TGP is by far the best Phils blog out there.

Also, Rodrigo Lopez? Sweet.

Thanks for the kind words. I think the Phils tend to have a lot of good blogs each doing their own thing.
