Seriously?
I know Coste isn’t very good but Bako is better? Halladay is a better backup catcher
Bako
Yeah, I don’t get why Bako is on this team.

thank god…dude belongs in a slow pitch softball league…has a horrible swing..and cant block balls to save his life
Again, it’s not “is Coste good.” It’s “is Coste better than Bako.”
I don’t claim to be a great evaluator of catching defense, but unless Coste was Mike Piazza with dysentery and Bako was Pudge Rodriguez, Age 23, I can’t see how you’d rather have Bako.
Exactly. And Ruiz pulled a muscle in his neck last night – had to come out of the game. Not exactly the time you want to get rid of any catchers…

No DFA anywhere
The league roster board just says claimed off waivers. That says to me they placed him on waivers, probably in an attempt to get him to Lehigh Valley.
Just because Houston claimed, doesn’t mean he is going anywhere; they can pull him off waivers any time. This stuff happens ALL the time, and we don’t see it unless one team makes a claim. It happens more often after the trade deadline, though. Teams are not required to make it public when they ask for waivers on a player – many times it is just to test the water.
The interesting part is Why? Are they trying to free up room on the 25-man for Pedro? I’d hate to see THAT more than I’d hate to see Costey go… Although I agree – Bako is a worse catcher and a far worse hitter than Coste.
Update
the AP is reporting that Coste will join the Astros Saturday. Now we are down to one healthy catcher, who can’t catch or hit??

That usually happens in August when you’re trying to pass someone through waivers so you can trade him. Here, Coste’s spot has already been taken by Ibanez, so they wouldn’t have tried to pass him through if they weren’t willing to give him up if he was claimed. If they had pulled him back, it would just mean that someone else would have to be waived or optioned.
I can just hear Charlie saying, “S**t, now I’m really going to have to manage.”

Legacies
This is all about the Old Boy Network. Instead of Mayberry going back to AAA where he belongs, he now gets major-league-minmum for contributing zero. But Junior Amaro knows that game well – a bunch of GM’s gave him every break in the book during his “career” – just because of his grandpappy, daddy and brother. Hell, that’s how he got his front-office no-show job from the Phils.
Now it is time for payback. remember the last time we got screwed by this nepotism? When we kept David Bell and let Polanco go? Just because Buddy Bell was a good friend of Dallas Green and them? Polanco would STILL be playing third base for us…
Thanks for nothin’, Junior!
Oooh goody – more conspiracy theory nuts
Please tell me how omar minaya is trying to sabotage the phillies by helping the mets get rid of jeff francoeur

Conspiracy? Please tell me what college BOTH Junior Amaro and Junior Mayberry played for? But weren’t smart enough to get degrees from?
Both of them have had lucrative careers handed to them. Mayberry MAY eventually show some talent, but he has certainly NOT earned a Big League roster spot based on performance!
Gimme a guy who has earned his way to the majors, every time. Come back Pat Gillick!

Polanco started 89 games at third for us. 230 at second. Subtract the games he started the season he was traded, and he started a total of 37 games at third compared to 230 at second. Since he left, he has started exactly 1 game at third. So, no, Polanco would not “STILL be playing third base for us”, not only becuase he didn’t play third base for us, but he doesn’t even play third base at all.

There was an opportunity for an interesting 3 player platoon that would have been optimized against lefty/righties back in the day and i would have preferred polanco kept to play 3rd over bell..but that rant was scary

Polanco started 93 games at third for the Cards one year – you tellin me he couldn’t play third?? And he SAID after he was traded to the woeful Tigers he would have been glad to play third to make room for Utley. What’s your point? That David Bell was a better option? Were you even AROUND for that lousy stretch? Polanco was a FAR better third baseman than anybody we had before Feliz, and he’s hit .315 since he left.
Mayberry: .188 avg., .133 v. RHP, .235 OBP, big loopy swing, can’t even get near a RHP’s curveball – a lifetime platoon hitter, just like Junior Amaro was. Excuse me? Where’s the contribution?? He needs at least another year in Triple A – and it’s doubtful he’ll ever make the majors with that swing – except that he’s a Legacy.
