Julio Rodriguez, GCL
So, what does everybody know about this guy? I have found very little information on him re: scouting reports and all that. Obviously, his stats through three starts are tremendous. 20 SO/ 1BB. Still only 18 years old and 6'4 190. 10 hits allowed in his three starts too. (Stats here.)
Now I know there is very little known about these kids in the GCL until the season is over, but does anybody here know what kind of stuff he has? Fastball sits where? Type of curve? Change? etc? Projection? Like I said, it is only the GCL so it is far too soon to get excited but if those numbers are any indication of an 18 year old then it looks like he could turn into a pretty good prospect.
Anyway, just checking to see if any of you Philly fans knew anything about him, thanks.

Don't have a ton of info...
…but Rodriguez was an 8th round pick in the 2008 Draft out of the Puerto Rico Baseball Academy. 6’4", projectable frame, was touching 90 his senior year and probably has a chance to add velo. As you noted, he’s still just 18 (until the end of August), so it’s not like he’s too old for the GCL. His scouting video from the draft last year had him throwing a loopy curveball in the high 60s, one decent looking change-up with some bite to it, and a slew of high 80s fastballs with a bit of tail (see here).
The Phillies have had some success with projectable righthanders over the years, but I haven’t heard word on whether the organization has tweaked Rodriguez’s mechanics, or if he’s added some velocity. The fact that he was assigned to the GCL and not the NYPL probably means the organization still thinks he’s a bit raw, but the results thus far make him worth monitoring.
For more information, check out Phuture Phillies draft review from last year.

reiterating the thanks — I am reading the article and it is very interesting
I had no idea that so many draft picks went unsigned!
