Stark: Phillies Say No to Halladay for Happ, Drabek, and Brown
"According to an executive of one team that has spoken with the Phillies' brass, the Phillies are adamantly opposed to giving up both Happ and Drabek. . . . [A]nother source said the two sides are currently discussing 'a list of seven or eight names' that will constitute the framework of a 3-for-1 or 4-for-1 deal."

Good on them.
I agree with WholeCamels that this still can get done, but that we need to negotiate down from the Happ/Drabek package somehow. I find it hard to believe that if we substitute Carrasco, and compensate by adding Donald, d’Arnaud and maybe another prospect (Worley?), that the Jays would really pull the plug.

They should of got rid of Halladay earlier
They’re not gonna get much for him, & I thank them for that.
Trade a #2 pitcher (Happ) & our two top prospects for an older pitcher, even if he is having a Cy Young year, Happ’s still being dominant in his starts, & adding our top 2 prospects for arguably no, maybe 1 or 2 more wins (if you sub Halladay in Happ’s rotation spot), I’ll pass too

He's probably waiting for the Phills counter offer.
Hopefully he’ll take it & it doesn’t include Happ, it may be only a few days, maybe hours until Halladay is a Phillie

My best-case scenario is that we deal Happ, Taylor, Donald, and D’Arnaud for Halladay. If adding Carrasco brings in Scutaro as well, I’d happily take that too.

Drabek, not Happ
plus a couple of position prospects. The Phils need Halliday, but getting rid of Happ creates another hole in the rotation.

A hole that will be filled by that Martinez guy?

I don't have a lot of faith in Pedro
And, to me, Happ is pretty good, certainly worth keeping. I don’t agree with trading good young pitching that you have now for great veteran pitching. Trade prospects, or spare parts that fill a need for the other team.

Well there’s a strategy that would pretty much guarantee nothing of value back – you’e trading for one of the best pitchers IN THE GAME for the next year and half – you ain’t getting him cheap

With Halladay on the team, Happ becomes almost a luxury. The rotation with them both:
Halladay/Hamels/Blanton/Happ/(Moyer/Martinez)
which means you have to send one of Pedro or Moyer to the bullpen, where neither of them are particularly helpful (though Pedro might be okay there).
If Happ is part of the trade, it’s:
Halladay/Hamels/Blanton/Moyer/Martinez
which is a slightly weaker rotation, but almost certainly not to the point that it would mean the difference between making the playoffs and not.
Then in the playoffs, you’re basically going with a three-man rotation anyway—the only way Pedro or Moyer gets a start is if the Phils are up 2-1 or 3-0 in a series. And you’ve got a loaded bullpen, hopefully strengthened by the addition of Myers as a setup guy, allowing Madson to do multi-inning stints.
Given that including Happ probably means saving one of the better prospects—ideally Drabek, who could step into the rotation as soon as next year—you have to do it.

Or
“the only way Pedro or Moyer gets a start is if the Phils are up 2-1 or 3-0 in a series” or if Pedro comes back from the minors pitching like a much younger Pedro. It’s not likely, but it’s possible.

No trade discussions ever get truly serious until warm buckets of spit and bags of balls are parts of the deal.

I’d prefer Taylor get dealt because of the whole logjam/age thing but surrendering Brown is OK.
Taylor, Happ, Carrasco, and Donald can go. A lower pitching prospect or one of two catching prospects can go if needed.
Scutaro coming back would be nice.

As a Jays fan I am sort of confused about JP’s insistence on having Happ. He’s having a great year and he’s got the potential to be a solid MLB starter for years to come, but the idea is for the Jays to rebuild here. Essentially we would be buying high on Happ while his value is at his highest, however we could probably get two unproven prospects in place of Happ which I’d be happier about. Happ is the Phils best pitcher stats wise (at the moment) so personally I wouldn’t even ask for him because he has a lot of value for your club right now. So if he’s holding up the deal then that is just silly.
On Taylor, we do have an outfield logjam with Wells, Rios, Lind and Snider all MLB calibre OFers for 2010 (if you view Wells as a Major Leaguer…), so one of them will probably DH. But we have a glaring hole at 1B, not sure if Taylor could learn 1B or not?
Losing Halladay will hurt for most Jays fans more than you might imagine, but that said I’d be more than thrilled will a return of: Drabek, Brown or Taylor, Donald or Marson and another pitching prospect (Knapp?) with us also giving you Scutaro or one of our top relievers like Frasor or Downs. That might be too steep of a price, but I think if the deal actually gets done it will be something along those lines with Happ staying a Phillie.

Halliday WILL BE A PHIL.
Right now, I believe that this deal to get Halliday WILL get done. JP needs to get this deal done because he has a proverbial “gun to his head” regarding trading Halliday where he needs to get some value for Roy before he becomes a free agent and he needs to get rid of that “albatross” of a salary around Toronto’s neck. Ruben and the Phils are in the “catbird’s seat” and they can play the “waiting game” and negotiate which prospects to offer the Jays. I, though, do not want the Phils to part with both Drabek and Happ, along with Dominic Brown. I am glad that the Phils are smart enough to carefully and judiciously weigh their prospects and options before initiiating a deal for Halliday.

I agree that JP needs to get this deal done but not necessarily for the reasons mentioned. His salary is affordable for the Jays and if we need to trim a bit we can easily get rid of guys like Overbay and Rolen who are replaceable. Also, we can still get value for Roy up until next year’s deadline, and there’s always the chance we re-sign him, which despite some false rumors out there is still very much in plan.
The reason we need to trade him now is because JP can’t shut his mouth. He is an embarassment to the Jays organization and has leaked so much true and false information to the media that a circus has developed and all the momentum is leading towards a Halladay trade. What is he going to do if he isn’t traded?

Also, we need an experienced, right - handed bat for the bench.
Also, what is VERY IMPORTANT is that the Phils need to get an experienced, right – handed, power – hitting bat for the bench. Ruben, please get a right – handed, power – hitting bat to the bench just as the Cardinals added Matt Holliday from Oakland. Scour the free – agent market and players that certain teams are willing to unload.

I still think any Halladay trade should be made looking forward to 2010, not for 2009.

I think we get him
and we get him on the cheap. St Louis got Matt Holliday for a bucket of baseballs, didn’t they?
The Jays WANT to trade Halladay…don’t kid yourself. They just want to get the best package they can. Personally….I like a rotation of Hamels/Halladay/Happ/Blanton/Moyer with Pedro closing.
Pipe dream…I know.

There’s a rather important difference (ok more than one probably) between Halladay and Holliday (and spelling isn’t one of them)
