But It's a Dry Heat: Phillies at Diamondbacks Game Thread, July 27, 2009
Philadelphia Phillies at Arizona Diamondbacks, Jul 27, 2009 9:40 PM EDT
The Philadelphia Not-Halladays, uh, Phillies travel to the belly of the Sonoran Desert to take on the Arizona Diamondbacks. It's hot there, I assure you.
Jamie Moyer takes on Jon Garland. My Magic 8-Ball sez... Many Baserunners.

Tonight the plan is: Jamie Moyer gets his 10th win while Garland gets his 10th loss.

I give that plan a …. real high rating

I swear, the D-Backs’ announcers have ADD.

either that or the heat is getting to their heads.

Maybe, but the roof is closed….or it’s another kind of heat.

yeah, I meant that they were horny. Sorry for the confusion.

Uhhh...
… what is our all-time record against these guys? It seems like we lose to them more often than not, our current situation notwithstanding.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
Fair enough.
I thought it would be worse for some reason, but we are under .500 natheless.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
I’m somewhat surprised we’ve played the Diamondbacks so many times.
I guess I still think of them as an expansion team…
In the land where no one cares about pro sports...
… everyone’s an expansion team!
Except maybe the Cardinals this year, and the Suns when they are doing well.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
I believe so.
I know there are some Flyers and Phillies fans out there.

I’m just so happy you decided to freeze up and make me miss the double play

Paul Bako time
He needs to become badass right here.
Like when he was Saul Bako, before being struck down by a blinding light on his way to Damascus.
Wait, wrong Paul.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
Wouldn’t it suck if Garland got a no hitter?

I have a ton of respect for Jamie, but...
… whatever rollercoaster he and Lidge have been riding on this year needs to stop.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
I don’t like the way this is shaping up.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
Per Mark Grace – Moyer has them right where he wants them.
FSN Arizona pays him to say crap like that?

after “the hawk” and the marlins announcers…he’s my least favorite. If the snakes were in our division, he’d easily be #1.
Hanz and Franz in DC are my number 1 most despised duo.
by WanderingMoses on Jul 27, 2009 10:37 PM EDT up reply actions
Nah.
He didn’t win over 250 games for no reason. Maybe it’s the heat.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
Josh Willingham hits two grand slams in one game.

Only third NL player ever to do it, apparently.

Howard and Raul are battling for the most home runs in the club, both with 26. Comeon Raul, take the lead!!!
by myrestingpulse_121bpm on Jul 27, 2009 10:45 PM EDT reply actions
A base hit will do.
Get some guys on base, give Moyer some more time to recover.

Howard is a 2nd half monster.

too bad it didn’t end up with him on base. but great 11 pitch AB.
"They say that nobody is perfect. Then they tell you practice makes perfect. I wish they'd make up their minds." - Wilt Chamberlain
yeah either way he drew a handful of pitches out of Garland.

Loved the long replay of the home run. It really was a rocket shot.
by WanderingMoses on Jul 27, 2009 10:51 PM EDT reply actions
Moyer… can he really strike out the side?
"They say that nobody is perfect. Then they tell you practice makes perfect. I wish they'd make up their minds." - Wilt Chamberlain
of course not, but he can get a nice 1-2-3 inning.

"They say that nobody is perfect. Then they tell you practice makes perfect. I wish they'd make up their minds." - Wilt Chamberlain
I know, i was being sarcastic, but the stars apparently make things boldfaced here.
by WanderingMoses on Jul 27, 2009 11:05 PM EDT up reply actions
some advantage with some pitchers?
Maybe Coste was a cancer to the team. He had a huge ego and he was really bringing the team down. And they decided that regardless of what he brings to the table, it isn’t worth breaking up the team.
oh wait…
"They say that nobody is perfect. Then they tell you practice makes perfect. I wish they'd make up their minds." - Wilt Chamberlain
Nice move, J-Roll….don’t know why the RF was faking the catch with two outs.

I was about to…but now the wife said she wants to finish her book…so I’ve got another 5-10 minutes. I hope Moyer doesn’t implode in that time.
A hope shared all the way around the fanbase

damn. Willingham blasted the Brewers. I knew he had 1 GS but 2? I think the Nats were saving up for one big performance.

Easy inning for Moyer. Does he have one more? What’s he at like 95 pitches now?

a la hs softball, if you are shutout by Jamie Moyer after 6 innings, some sort of mercy rule should apply.
by Wet Luzinski on Jul 27, 2009 11:35 PM EDT up reply actions
Moyer
How about a tip of the cap to our honorary pitching coach. Six shutout innings should get you some praise, even against the Diamondbacks.
by phillyinportland on Jul 27, 2009 11:36 PM EDT reply actions
Well, Moyer still in. Anyone warming in the pen? If so, who?
by myrestingpulse_121bpm on Jul 27, 2009 11:42 PM EDT reply actions
Damn, guess no three inning CHoP save tonight.
I am truly disappointed by that. But not by how Moyer has just started mowing them down since the 3rd.

I guess Charlie likes to get the most out of Moyer when he’s getting people out – might have gone a little longer than he should but that’s part of the luxury of a six-run lead.

Sigh...
Parra to second on fielder’s indifference.
Madson in from bullpen on manager’s indifference.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
Madson wants to make every inning he pitches an adventure, even with a six-run lead.

He's in danger of blowing it entirely at this rate.

it’d be a shame if they let it go to seed. When I saw the place 11 years ago I was deeply impressed—not only at the global-warming inducing stadium-wide air conditioning, but just with the appearance, how nice the workers were, etc.
