And the Price of Halladay Comes Down....
When the team owner says, three days before the trading deadline, that it needs to "bring costs reasonably under control and more in line with revenues," the team's best trading chip just got a lot less expensive for the Phillies....

I’m a hard core masochist, so when i was growing up i looked for the worst run franchises with the most irritating fan bases – Philadelphia won by a long shot.

I’m from California and like the Phillies. But I like the Phillies because they beat the Dodgers in the NLCS last year.
Oh and I two friends from Philly, who are die hard Phillies fans.
So it’s more of a ‘you hate LA’ thing than you like the phillies?

That and I just like how Philadelphia is put together. Great offense, great manager, great pitching. They are just a fun team to watch.
Yeah, that doesn’t make you a phillies fan – just makes you a bandwagoner…

Boston's latest offer...
…if true, legitimately scares me. Buchholz, Bowden, and Ryan Westmoreland is pretty comparable to what the Jays are asking for from us. (Buchholz is still a better long-term prospect than Drabek; Bowden is sort of a right-handed Happ, though with less certainty; and Westmoreland has tools that grade out comparably to Brown’s, though he’s 2 years younger and 2 levels farther away.)
We’re in great shape as long as we remain the only bidder that makes sense; if Boston’s willing to move around Buchholz, then the price could actually go up. Damn it, Theo, go get a bat instead to lift your sagging offense and stop hogging up all the pitching.
I believe the Jays have said before that it would take more for them to trade within the division than it would outside of it. He might demand Bard, too, in order for this deal to go through.
Personally, I’m not worried. I want Halladay, but at our price and am not willing to overpay. If the Red Sox are willing to overpay, let them. At least he doesn’t end up in the NL if this happens.
that offer
I think it’s crap. This is the same source who “reported” that Anaheim had offered Jered Weaver, which was later debunked.
Also, he references “19-year-old outfielder Dominic Taylor” later on in the piece, so…
Good point. Hadn’t seen the Dominic Taylor reference, so hopefully that’s indicative of the truth of that rumor.
I still think the odds are good of us getting a deal done on decent terms, but I’m just worried about another team panicking: the Angels including Jered Weaver, the Brewers dangling Escobar and Gamel, the Rangers dumping the farm system in order to convince Toronto to take on salary. I hadn’t really been worried about Theo Epstein panicking; as jemagee says below, the Sawks need a bat more than anything. But if Epstein goes out of character and does panic, he has the pieces (even within the division) to make a deal impossible for us.
Another team panicking? That’s what I’ve been hoping for this whole time! Just to ensure that we’re not the ones who do the panicking.
Ha fair enough. Maybe I’m giving Amaro too much credit here,* but I think he’s playing this the right way: he’s sticking to his guns, knowing that Ricciardi doesn’t have a ton of leverage, and waiting to get the best price possible. If that best price is an acceptable package, then he’ll pull the trigger, and if not, then he won’t.
*I have my doubts regarding Amaro as a talent evaluator, but if the offseason contract extensions (especially those for Hamels and Dobbs) showed us anything, it’s that he’s a pretty good negotiator.
Amaro may be sticking to his guns but according to some reports his ‘lowball’ offer to the blue jays in response to their initial offer was not only rejected but created some acrimony in blue jays camp so many he screwed this up by his lonesome making the blue jays less willing to compromise

dajafi = soothsayer
An anchor named Dan Roche talked to someone in the Boston organization who said that reports of the Buchholz/Bowden/Westmoreland offer were bogus. That makes me feel better.
That’s not a legitimate boston offer…no offense to whoever wrote that but Boston’s problems are bat related

Buchholz
Yahoo is reporting that the Sox have included Buchholz in an offer for Halladay.
Isn’t today the blue jays artificial deadline day for trading hallday anyway?

The Red Sox seem more interested in bats (in fact they just traded for another one) and isn’t bucholz a prospect (still) of higher regard than drabek?

Probably. He’s older than Drabek though.
Per my fanpost from the other day, I’ll believe in this Boston trade when I see it. They’ve kicked the tires on trades like this before, but they’ve never actually made one. There’s a first time for everything, of course, but this would be a first.
I agree – that it’s probably way too much – in fact they’re more frequently ‘trading away’ the big name (Ramirez, Nomar) then take it on.

you know what
If you really think about it, we’re in an incredibly fortunate position as Phillies fans right now even if we forget all about Halladay. Here we are, coming off a championship season, with an outstanding core group that’s at its peak but not on the verge of an imminent decline, on pace to win 95 games this year, with a playoff berth all but locked up, nearly everybody under contract past this year, and with three of the top 25 prospects in all of baseball according to Baseball America. We’re in great, great shape, past, present, and future.
The only good comparison I can think of from recent Philadelphia sports history is the mid-’80s 76ers. Won a recent championship, posted 50-win seasons year after year, with an all-time great though aging core and a up-and-coming young all time great getting ready to take the torch and the #1 overall pick in the 1986 NBA Draft. Of course, they somehow managed to screw it all up, but it took a lot of effort for them to do so.
I'll second that
And, thinking a little more micro than macro, we’re in the middle of an 18-3 run. Think about that for a second – 18-3. That’s insane!

+1
no matter what happens with halladay/lee, our team is one of the best franchises in baseball right now. wow. if you had told me 5 years ago that we’d be one of the best in baseball, i would have laughed in your face.

Anyone know anything about a deal for Kazmir? I have seen that he might be traded and he seems like he would might be good to get.
wow
I just looked at his stats for this year and they are terrible. Of the last 10 games, 5.40 ERA is the best! It makes sense that I havent heard anything about trading for him then I guess. Even so, though, his ERA the last two years is 3.50ish, and during the off season it is at least worth looking into I geuss.
How are the stats that matter?
