Needing Raul: Mets at Phillies Game Thread, July 3, 2009
New York Mets at Philadelphia Phillies, Jul 3, 2009 7:05 PM EDT
Two talented ballclubs, slouching toward mediocrity.
Somebody has to win. Might as well be the Phillies.
Rodrigo Lopez! Livan Hernandez! Sloppy pitching! Ineffectual hitting! Laughable fielding! FEEL IT.
Discuss the game below.

Would it help the phillies if at CBP everyone rooted for the other team?

I’m guessing they’re going to wear them the entire weekend. They wore ’em a couple months ago, too. Maybe Memorial Day?
I liked last year’s blue hats better.

Unfortunately, it looks like his batting average is going to fit right in with Ruiz and Coste in the sub-.250 range. On the other hand, he did break up a no-hitter the other night. For which Bobby Cox is eternally grateful.

Am I looking at the right game log? Is it 3-0 Phillies, bases loaded one out? Or am I having a weird dream?

Okay, then, that was a better start than we’ve seen recently. Amazing how things go much better when Rollins starts the game off by getting on base.

Did Coste get cut or injured or something?

Me, too. It would be nice to be in first on the Fourth of July. I don’t know if they mark that date the way they used, but in the old days they used to have a fairly high correlation between being in first on the Fourth and finishing in first. Part of it was that day was pretty close to the halfway mark, as it will be this year for most teams.

Livan leavin'
I think it was last night – maybe two night ago – that some bright analyst on MLBTV stated that right now Livan Hernandez was the Mets’ best pitcher.

The SNY announcers have been verbally fellating the Phillies all night. It’s actually pretty embarrassing. Think about how annoyed we get when McCarthy doesn’t show the proper sense of despair when an opponent hits a homer, and multiply it by about 100.
Lopez has a rotten Anton Chighur haircut.

Well, they did criticize Cholly....
….for not pinch hitting for Dobbs.

And they did emphasize we're 8 games over .500 vs the Nats...
…while showing the NL East standings without mentioning the Marlins are 9-0 vs the Nats…

Another Chan Ho sighting – at times he has been very impressive out of the bullpen.

I believe at this point that he only responds well to scathing criticism, no matter what his actual results are, so no matter how much I might agree with you, I say he sucks and I say the hell with him.
Kind of like a tough love treatment method – it’s actually not that different from many Phillies fans’ treatment of many players over the years. A few did respond well, but the city’s reputation for being hard on players probably hasn’t helped bring many free agents to Philadelphia.

Only baserunner vs Mets pen...
….was the intentional walk after the Dobbs DP ball.
Not sure if this is a bad sign or just an indication this team is tired from losing so often, but it sure seems like they’ve been coasting ever since Livan left the game.
Well, I guess Victorino did show some hustle there to beat that out. Good sign, maybe.

Ok, not to be smart but.
TMac and Wheels were acting like Madson will now have confidence. Please. he held a 5 run lead. Now if he pitches a scoreless 8th later in the series up 1 or 2 runs, then I’ll believe that.. But Very happy with a win, AT HOME nonetheless
Wieters is HERE! and the Phillies are in first! Doesn;t get much better
Rodrigo Lopez
Gotta love his outing today. Hopefully he makes it hard to send him back to lehigh valley
