Prospect News: Savery promoted to Lehigh Valley

Joe Savery, the Phillies' 1st round pick (19th overall) in 2007, was promoted to Triple-A Lehigh Valley today.

While Joe's surface numbers haven't been too shabby in 112.1 Reading innings (12-4, 4.41 ERA), his peripherals have regressed in making the jump from High-A to Double-A: 6.2 K/9, 4.3 BB/9, 47.0% GB, 4.78 FIP. At Age 23, there's reason to believe that Joe just hasn't been able -- after labrum surgery his junior year -- to regain the pure stuff that made him as good a prospect as David Price his freshman year at Rice.

The good news is that Savery's athletic and lefthanded, so there's still a chance he'll figure it out.  For the time being, though, his promotion to Triple-A -- especially in a month where he surrendered 26 runs in 27 innings -- is a bit curious.  Perhaps the organization thinks he's ticketed for the bullpen?  Or, if it all goes south on the mound, first base?  Only time will tell.

WIth the bullpen woes the phils have been having, one might wonder if this ‘speedy’ promotion is a ‘battle field’ promotion in the hopes that he’ll be good enough to join the roster near the end of august to bolster the bullpen?

How many freaking arms do we have floating about now?

I know there’s injuries, but we got Pedro, Myers (coming back), Kendrick and the list goes on and on. We’ve tried Bastardo, Lopez, and I know I’m missing someone else.
Do we really envision another call up?

Well see – there’s the bull pen and there’s the rotation – the rotation seems fine now – and there’s no guarantee that myers will be healthy or ready to pitch regardless of projections – the pens a weakness and the phils need to shore it up.

NO TRADE!

Watching ESPN. They were reporting a Halladay trade looked ready to go with the Angels, then backtracked and said the deal couldn’t get done. He’s not a Dodger, not in the NL, and will not be a potential foil should we make the fall classic!!!!!!!!

Savery

Considering he has gone 0-3 in his last three starts and has let up a boatload of runs, I don’t know how smart of a move this was. Maybe the move will jumpstart him and he will pitch to his potential like he did when he was 12-1 about a month ago. We shall see.

Short-term move?

LV has Carpenter/Chacin/Mazone in their five-man rotation right now. Martinez will make a start or two, before moving up. Kendrick will, likely, be back in the LV rotation in a week (when Condrey is ready). Lopez could also go back to the LV rotation (swapping spots with Martinez?) shortly.

Could Savery just be in AAA to cover a hole for a couple of starts?

I’d love to see the Phils start developing Savery as a Brooks Kieschnick type reliever/bench bat. Wondering how much his hitting skills have atrophied over the last two years though.
