Blargh

I’m in the Chicago area and I figured if I didn’t have the Detroit-Minnesota game, this one would be the “national” game. But of course not. FOX would rather worship at the feet of Cheatin’ Manny Ramirez and his douchebag Dodger teammates.

That ball hit deep! Way back! You can put it on the boooaaaard...YES!

Long drive into deep right center field! This ball is OUTTA HEEERRRREE!

No surprise here

Portland being on the west coast it was inevitable that we would get Dodgers-Padres. Plus, we have the AAA team for the Padres here, our Portland Beavers. Maybe we’ll get some in-game highlights if someone hits a home run.
And … here comes Manny!

by phillyinportland on Jul 4, 2009 4:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Got that right, and he must still be cheating, because he hit a HR first AB.
Why do we make an Hero out of a cheater? Great for the youngsters to know!

FOX probably going to interrupt to show all Manny at bats, I’m lucky to get all the at bats in that game, even the spanish channel sadly.

Not that it’s a great start, but it is always nice to get an early run – especially with Moyer pitching. Not sure if my memory is correct but it seems like Moyer pitches more relaxed and better command when he has a lead.

According to Fox (which, BTW, means it’s probably wrong), it looked like Wright heard a fan say “I got it” and assumed the ball would go into the stands… HA

Maybe it's just me, but

it sure seems like the Phillies have gotten an unusual number of two-out bases-empty hits – usually ending up with zero runs.

by phillyinportland on Jul 4, 2009 6:31 PM EDT reply actions

What percentage of 2 out base empty singles don’t score I wonder…

Don't frack with me or you'll get a punch in the kidneys...you've been warned

by jemagee on Jul 4, 2009 6:37 PM EDT up reply actions

I have idea how to calculate that, but I would guess that it has to be less than 10%. Maybe a little higher if you have a lot of home run hitters that came up after a two-out hit.

by phillyinportland on Jul 4, 2009 6:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Wll there’s that tango tiger chart I think – but if you think 90% (or more) of them don’t score, then it’s no surprise the phils have a lot of 2 out empty bases singles that don’t score then?

Don't frack with me or you'll get a punch in the kidneys...you've been warned

by jemagee on Jul 4, 2009 6:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed. What I was trying to say was that it seems like in the last week the Phillies seem to be having more of those out-out-single (or double)-out innings than usual. Just anecdotal on what I seem to remember from some of the Braves series plus last inning.

by phillyinportland on Jul 4, 2009 6:48 PM EDT up reply actions

i think

around 10%. i don’t know for sure, but i know a way of computing an approximate expected run number, and you also figure that two singles in a row would be a little over 5% and an extra base hit would probably be a little under 5% too.

by Matt Swartz on Jul 4, 2009 6:42 PM EDT up reply actions

I figured it would be a low number so it’s not surprising – the original statement he made – to me – if 90% of the time (on average) 2 out singles with none on don’t score :)

Don't frack with me or you'll get a punch in the kidneys...you've been warned

by jemagee on Jul 4, 2009 6:43 PM EDT up reply actions

First base with two outs

run expectancy is about .251.

This does not mean that the runner scores .251% of the time, just that on average, .251 runs are scored in an inning after there is a situation with a man on first and 2 outs. Multiple runs scored (through HR, for instance) would pump up the number, so the actual number of times a runner scores is less than 25.1%.

So, in a long-winded way, I have not added anything to JEM’s comment or MattS’ comment, so please just ignore me.
