Meh
Not exactly what I was looking for…although this may free us up to include Happ in a trade for Halladay.
I truly hope the two aren’t connected since expecting more than this season from Pedro is a bit nutso

Yeah, I think this is definitely a 1/2 season rental of Pedro
The two probably aren’t related, but the Jays would most definitely want a ML-ready arm to go along with a bunch of prospects. I’m just throwing the idea out there that Happ was the arm they’re looking for from the Phillies and that Amaro is making preparations for a deal.
In reality Pedro could just be replacing Lopez/Bastardo/etc in the rotation, although that goes against our “looking for a top of the rotation guy”.

There’s looking for a top of the rotation guy and getting a top of the rotation guy…it seems that the Blue Jays have set a very very high price tag on Halladay – cause I don’t think they WANT to trade him but are hoping to be overwhelmed by someone. Are there any other top of the rotation guys out there that could even be available? Is Oswalt still top of the rotation – is he available?
It’s like the sixers they say ‘sam wants to be traded, we want to trade sam’ and there are probably offers, but the offers probably suck more than the toothless hookers at AC…
Keith Law said in todays chat that while the phils minor league system is currently better than the mets – it’s top heavy, and I have a feeling obtaining Halladay would stirp that top heaviness and it might or might not be worth it.
I know hallday is a ‘big name’ pitcher but is he a good ground ball pitcher? (that’s an honest question – i know very little about him)

Yeah, I hear you about the plausibility
He’s actually a very good groundball pitcher. I don’t have the stats in front of me but he gets a lot of ground ball outs, not to mention his K/BB ratio. The question comes down to how bad the two teams want to make the deal. I don’t think Toronto wants to trade him, but they most likely can’t afford him after next year, so he’d be walking anyway. They won’t get as much for him at next years deadline as they would now, so if they’re going to make him available (albeit for a big price), now’s the time to move on him.

Just checked his GB% and he’s 5th this year at 54.4% (career avg 56%).

I agree with the general sentiment that this is a low risk move. Plus I’d rather get pedro in right now when there is still enough time to see if he has anything before the trade deadline.
