Lehigh Valley IronPigs beat Louisville, 10-9; Michael Taylor hits for cycle
The Phillies will need to do some soul-searching this offseason with their outfield situation. Taylor was 5-for-5 (an additional double) with 4 RBI.

I liked the Sporting News article...
…because it’s one of the few articles I’ve ever seen about fan behavior that doesn’t take the OMG PHILLY FANS SUCK line:
“Fans growing up in the Philadelphia area constantly hear about snowballs at Santa Claus and batteries at J.D. Drew, and nobody seems to take issue with the fact that they were isolated incidents. In the case of the batteries, it was a couple of morons in the outfield. "
(and then goes on to call the beer-thrower a moron)
Philly Fans
Someone was just murdered in the parking lot of Citizens Bank park. Had his face bashed in. Just sayin’

I was once nearly attacked (saved by security guards) at friggin Nassau Coliseum after an Islanders game by a couple of drunk idiots. Drunk people turn into idiots. Unfortunately someone was killed at a LA Angels game earlier this season. It sucks. But to say “Philly fans are violent” because of that? You’re just trolling.
they were from Fishtown 2 with prior convictions
We call them Douchebags not fans

“fishtown” precedes “convicts”…? go there sometime, its not the 70’s anymore.
i know i’m preaching to the choir, but this really better not be entered into the annals of philadelphia sports hooliganry. the story really needs to be seen for what it is: a couple of criminals getting drunk and killing someone. more an indictment of the PA correctional system than it is of phillies fans or the neighborhood they are from.
aannddd....
They weren’t even in the ballpark, they were at the adjacent bar prior to the incident.
But I see you just like trolling on other teams’ sites, so please, don’t let us stop you.

Not a Phillies Hater
Not trollin’ on the Phils. Just sayin’, Philly’s got a bad reputation. I go there all the time and it’s a tough place to watch a game as a visitor. I did see a bunch of tools in their Red Sox gear at a Phils/Padres game get slammed with beer and garbage. I had all the love in the world for Philly at that game.

And just like that...
…Michael Taylor is up to .286/.368/.490 in 110 Triple-A plate appearances. The cycle officially puts an end to his “slow start.” Jeez, the guy is a monster.

Personally, I think the guy in the U of Miami shirt should’ve been thrown out of the stadium too. On general principle.

Just a couple hours til gametime...
Hopefully I’ll be able to watch the last few innings. Anybody going to the game? Taking a broom? Wish I were there. I’ve always wanted to see Wrigley.
Rowdy behavior
Many years ago my son and I were refereeing a soccer tournament in Cape May. It was the last game of the day and a huge fight broke out. The parents from both sides had a free for all on the field. The folding chairs were flying, We terminated the game and were heading to the parking lot. There was a man and woman walking in front of us. The guy was wearing a white shirt with one of the sleeves ripped off and the woman had the collar ripped off her blouse. The woman said, I really didn’t want to come to this tournament because I thought soccer was boring, but after the fight started I had a great time. I can’t wait to come to next years tournament.

If Shane didnt catch it...
It would have been fan interferance. Would the run have been allowed to score?
by philiafan14364 on Aug 13, 2009 11:54 AM EDT reply actions
Definitely
The ball was hit to the warning track in left-center. Pat Burrell could have scored from third base running backward.
Anyone know the exact rule on this? I have to admit, I was pretty incensed, thought fan interference should’ve been called regardless, dead ball, batter out, everyone stays on their base. I was under the impression this rule was applicable at the umpires discretion to basically penalize the home team for their fans being morons.
In that case it wouldn’t matter who would’ve or wouldn’t have advanced.
umpires cannot penalize fan behavior, then can only negate the effects.
Therefore….had Victorino dropped the ball what would have LIKELY been the result is the out is awarded, the batter credited with a SF, the runner at third scores and the guy from second PROBABLY not allowed to tag up as it is somewhat feasible (albeit unlikely) that Victorino could have thrown him out at third.
Had Victorino aimed his post beer dousing throw towards third (instead of second), I think Manuel could have successfully argued fan-interference and had him returned to second base.
Per MLB.com's rules:
http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/official_info/official_rules/game_preliminaries_3.jsp
3.16
When there is spectator interference with any thrown or batted ball, the ball shall be dead at the moment of interference and the umpire shall impose such penalties as in his opinion will nullify the act of interference.
APPROVED RULING: If spectator interference clearly prevents a fielder from catching a fly ball, the umpire shall declare the batter out.
Rule 3.16 Comment: There is a difference between a ball which has been thrown or batted into the stands, touching a spectator thereby being out of play even though it rebounds onto the field and a spectator going onto the field or reaching over, under or through a barrier and touching a ball in play or touching or otherwise interfering with a player. In the latter case it is clearly intentional and shall be dealt with as intentional interference as in Rule 3.15. Batter and runners shall be placed where in the umpire’s judgment they would have been had the interference not occurred.
No interference shall be allowed when a fielder reaches over a fence, railing, rope or into a stand to catch a ball. He does so at his own risk. However, should a spectator reach out on the playing field side of such fence, railing or rope, and plainly prevent the fielder from catching the ball, then the batsman should be called out for the spectator’s interference. Example: Runner on third base, one out and a batter hits a fly ball deep to the outfield (fair or foul). Spectator clearly interferes with the outfielder attempting to catch the fly ball. Umpire calls the batter out for spectator interference. Ball is dead at the time of the call. Umpire decides that because of the distance the ball was hit, the runner on third base would have scored after the catch if the fielder had caught the ball which was interfered with, therefore, the runner is permitted to score. This might not be the case if such fly ball was interfered with a short distance from home plate. *
No Troll.
As a Cub fan who was in attendance, just wanted to add my two cents.
Thinks it’s pretty safe to say that all of us at one point or another have been sick and tired of the generalities bestowed upon our respective fan bases by the national media and other outsiders. Unfortunately, it’s incidents like last night that help perpetuate the stereotype. Happened to be shooting the shit with a Phillies fan who was on vacation and both of us said the same thing: The Phillies fan base gets a bad rap (batteries, snowballs, etc) as do Cubs fans, and the truly sad part is the fact that the vast majority on both sides are knowledgeable, well behaved, baseball fans.

Nice to hear from a Cubs fan. I agree with what you say here, but the difference is that nobody ever lets the Philly stuff go. Every fooball season, we’re reminded that 40 years ago people booed a shabby, drunk, last-minute-replacement Santa Claus at an Eagles game. We’re reminded of the JD Drew and JImmie Johnson incidents, both of which were 10+ years ago.
What we don’t hear is how knowledgeable and loyal the Philadelphia fans are, and how well we travel. I, for one, will be at the Phils-Pirates game in Pittsburgh two weeks from today, and at the Eagles opener at Carolina. In both cases, I expect to meet and greet dozens (hundreds?) of my brethren.

Very true. As Cubs fans we have a few defining moments, I guess you would call them, but for the most part we get the “world’s largest beer garden, frat party, etc.”
Even though I haven’t been to a game in Philly, I do attend Phillies games when they are in Chicago and/or Milwaukee and follow your team closely otherwise. Great fan base, and your right Philly Mike, you do travel well.

Thanks, but I wouldnt worry too much about it. It only takes one or two people to mess up the reputation of thousands, or even millions. Philadelphia fans know this pretty well.
As an aside, I actually feel kind of bad for the fat guy who got erroneously kicked out of the game. Mostly, I am pissed that the guy who actually did it got a free pass. Also, though, most people probably dont read blogs etc. and so they will just see an ESPN highlight of the guy getting thrown out and will assume he was the one who did it. It seems unfortunate that someone who was in the wrong place at the wrong time (and hopelessly drunk) gets blamed for something some a hole did. I really hope they get the guy who actually did it.
Does anyone know what type of punishment go along with something like this? Is there jail time or a fine or something, aside from any baseball punishments?
So I went to the Lehigh game last night and left in the fifth inning around 9:30 because the game was taking forever (it started 40 minutes late beacuse of “rain” when it wasnt even raining). Kinda pissed I missed out, especially when it’s the first game I can ever remember leaving early at any level, AA and A included. Did see Taylor’s triple though so atleast I saw the “touch” hit. Damnit having to get up at 545. Who really needs work anyway?

Accordoing to the report i heard it wasn’t the cubs, it was victorino – and technically wouldn’t it have to be victorino – since he was the victim.
The cubs resonse should be to ban said person from cubs games, forever, and if a season ticket holder – tough – you’re money is forfeit. It’s not like the cubs will have problems selling those seats – or leave em empty to remind folks…
If there are no serious consequences when one acts like a total asshat – one will continue to act like a total asshat until someone stabs him in the heart with dry pasta
