Hamels' xFIP is 6th best in NL - Hamels not broken, just unlucky?
Stumbled across this pretty good story:
It discusses Brian Banniser of KC and his favorite stat: xFIP. He notes that Hamels is doing better on that than any other starter for the Phillies. Seems to confirm several scattered threads from TGP - Hamels peripherals are not off a cliff; he's just been unlucky. Worth a read.

Although I agree Hamels has been a lot better than his results suggest, I think his xFIP, despite its generally superior predictive power over ERA and FIP, is a little optimistic. There’s no question he’s been hit-unlucky. But his very high HR/FB rate probably isn’t all down to bad luck. I remember reading an article looking at yearly correlations of HR/FB rate that found a moderate correlation. That fits with (my, at least) perception that he’s missing up in the zone a lot this year.
As I noted here: http://www.thegoodphight.com/2009/8/5/978193/whats-going-on-with-cole
He has been mostly unlucky. I love the fact that Bannister and high end statistics are making their way through to the general public more. I don’t like the elitest Einstein comment, but oh well, smarts are for the smarties, right?
For Who? My teammates.
For What? To Win.
How Much? Where do I sign?
less than 2 weeks later – hamels is down to 10th (i just thought i’d look it up)
If this is a metric you put stock in – beware the cardinals who have 3 pitchers in the top 9
Don't frack with me or you'll get a punch in the kidneys...you've been warned
