$10M makeover planned for Reading Phillies park
I'm old enough to remember when that park actually had grandstand bleachers that were General Admission, and the horrid mascot "The Silly Phillie," who looked like a desiccated, water-stained Phillie Phanatic with advanced syphilis.

Victorino
I think he needs a few more years to be talked about in that group, but what I think is great about how he’s playing is that it’s vindicating what many of us said when he was backing up Rowand. Victorino should have been playing center field those years and Rowand should have been elsewhere. I wouldn’t say best-ever center fielder, but he was certainly the best center fielder on the roster the moment he joined the team.
Yes/no
Yes in 2007. In 2006, Victorino floated replacing Burrell, Rowand, and Abreu at various points (and then Abreu for good once he was traded). But it was clear even then he was a better center fielder than Rowand and should have been playing there – if not before the Abreu trade, then definitely after it.

My point being, they were both in the lineup together in 2007, so it’s not like Rowand deprived him of any playing time that year. Victorino also played most of the season in 2006, filling in during the extended time period when Rowand was injured and then stepping in full-time after the Abreu trade.
In any event, isn’t it a pretty big overstatement to say Victorino was “certainly the best center fielder on the roster the moment he joined the team”? At least at the plate, Prime Rowand was a better player than Pre-Prime Victorino. Rowand had significantly more power than Victorino, for one thing. The fair knock on Rowand in those days wasn’t that he was a bad player, but that he was overrated because of his image of being scrappy and a leader and all that. I realize that stuff like that can be irritating, but saying he was clearly inferior to 2006-07 Victorino is an overcorrection.
I was talking about fielder
In 2006, when Burrell, Rowand, and Abreu were on the team, I’m not sure I would have played Victorino over Rowand. But, the second any of those three were out of the lineup, Victorino should have been in center. Same with 2007.

Ok, I understand now. No doubt Vic has always been a better fielder than Rowand.
Off the top of my head, I’m wondering if Rowand would have been so much of a liability in right because of his arm that moving him there would have hurt the team more than moving Vic to center would have helped. Probably not, I guess.
Gary Maddox, Richie Ashburn, and even Lenny Dykstra all has sads.

Kenny Lofton, he was the best CF the phills ever had
"Leave Michael Alone!" - said like that Brittany Spears fan on youtube
I’m not sure if this is sarcastic or not, but Lofton was pretty awesome that year he played for the Phillies.

That is some very nicc writing.
not on the internet
To satisfy my curiosity, I tried to find a picture of the Silly Phillie, but nothing turns up on google. I’d love to see the thing….

thanks
I still remember going to those Reading games 20 times or so a season and thinking was the greatest thing ever, despite the lack of “kid friendly” amenities. I might have been unusual in that I was so keenly interested in the game itself at a pretty young age, but I still kind of prefer my baseball viewing experience to be as “no-frills” as possible. I guess the skyrocketing attendance has more or less shown that I’m an anomaly in this regard (I can remember “Guess the Attendance!” nights where you could literally count the fans in the bleachers and get pretty close to the correct total). There were no kiddle playgrounds, games, etc., just the ballgame and some really cheap eats.

Reading
I hope they don’t Disneyfy the joint too much in the renovation. I really consider Reading one of the absolute best places to watch a baseball game. From the looks of the article it looks like they’re addressing the needs rather than scrubbing it up too much.
I don’t remember the Silly Phillie, but early versions of Screwball were, well, worth the price of admission.
Silly Phillie
I can only remember one or two appearances, I’m guessing it was 1987 because he danced on the dugout to “La Bamba,” and the movie came out in 1987.
He was off-white and looked like a unbrushed bi-pedal sheepdog, and it appears that they tried to affix a snout-type arrangement to his face to resemble the Phillie Phanatic. The costume was atrocious and the dancing was just the biggest douchechill ever.

We should refer to one another as either “bubbes” or “putzes” depending on our reaction to comments. And I heartily endorse this tutorial for more Yiddish fun.
BTW – for out of market folks – tonights game is on MLB network if you have it

Speaking of tonight’s game. With Cupcakes on the hill opposing Davis and Santana going for the Mets against the Braves, we have a decent chance to put another game between us and Atlanta. I’m not so confident about the Fish with Johnson going (I think).

Stutes
Nice to see one of our local Oregon papers getting an article picked up: the Lake Oswego Review story on local hero Mike Stutes. I don’t follow high school sports, but I do remember Stutes being part of both Oregon State teams that won the NCAA titles in 2006-07. He even won the clinching game in 2007, I believe. (By the way, for those who dream of a Phillies back-to-back championship, OSU winning two in a row has got to be one of the most unlikely stories, yet it happened.) With Stutes and the many other young arms in the Phillies’ minor league system, they seem to be ready to move pitchers up to the big team or make trades, as needed. Since those pre-Randy Wolf days when Tyler Green and Mike Bottalico were about the only Phillies prospect pitchers who did anything – and that wasn’t saying much – it’s heartening to see what’s available today.

Fellow Oregonian here
I’m actually a native of Corvallis, growing up a couple hundred yards from the OSU campus. Never followed college baseball much, but I watched and rooted for the Beavers in the CWS both years, and yeah, it was about as unlikely a story as you’ll find in sports.
Are you a native of Oregon, or a transplant?
Not a native
Transplant from South Jersey via West Philly. Spent first half of my life near Philly, second half in Portland. I love Oregon but, sports-wise, the Philadelphia teams will always be my home teams.
