Joe Mauer and .400
Does he have a shot (well, of course he HAS a shot)? His chances looked dim on July 29th after an 0-3 left him at .353. Since then he has gone 36-84, batting .480. Yeah, after "dropping" to .353. Mauer goes on a .480 tear to get him up to .380 on the year. I don't think he keeps it up, but wow can this dude hit.

I seem to remember when he was coming up that he was touted as having potential batting champion talent, which is pretty remarkable for a catcher to start with, but…
wow.
I don’t think he’s going to hit .400, but I just hope he doesn’t get shafted out of the MVP.
MVP agreed
He should be on his THIRD already. He’d better get it this year.
What’s amazing is he’s a catcher and doesn’t have that blazing foot speed that would enable him to leg out a few infield hits that might make the difference between .400 and, say, .385. It’s all hitting.
He’s starting to creep up on Albert Pujols for “best player” honors.

If you believe WAR
= best player, then he’s actually slightly ahead of Pujols, right now.
What is his BABIP? Is it in line with his career norms? To what extent is luck a factor in his success this year?
Not that I mean to take away anything from the guy — a great season is a great season, and he is by all accounts a great player.

It’s high. But then, he might be the next Tony Gwynn.
