Phillies Breakfast Links, August 21, 2009: Meet the (Semi-)Mets, Magic Crossover, Drabek Dominates

Phils don't plan on taking Mets lightly
Don't let them sneak up on you. They're still dangerous. Right?

Mets need no motivation vs. Phils
Hey, the Phillies miss Johan Santana this weekend. Good news!

Dwight Howard can dunk, but can he hit?

Jameer Nelson brought some of his Orlando Magic teammates to take batting practice at Citizens Bank Park. I'm not much of a basketball fan, but the whole thing feels kinda dirty. Imagine the Flyers shooting freethrows at Madison Square Garden.

Drabek blanks Portland as Reading rolls to win
Domonic Brown also with two hits. They ought to be shutting Kyle Drabek down pretty soon (I guess the season ends in a couple weeks, barring the playoffs).

Phillies Notebook: Francisco has been versatile addition for Phillies
Anything that results in fewer at-bats for Eric Bruntlett is OK by me.

Star-divide

Blanton finally benefits from Phillies' offense
Facing the likes of Tim Lincecum will do that, but Joe Blanton since the end of May has been extraordinary, and is yet another reason you don't look at win-loss record when evaluating a pitcher.

Razing Arizona
Okay, I'm just going to say I'm pissed off that I didn't think of this headline.

Phillies' Myers strikes out three in long-awaited rehab stint
Nice addition to the bullpen, if he'll be ready.

Ibanez confident he'll regain stroke
Lost in the recent hot streak is Raul Ibanez's struggles. He basically carried the team in April, but a little something would be nice...

Pay for performance, not for potential
Horrendous (David, sorry this is a waste of your time!).

Is that last one by Ferguson Jenkins?

Like the real Ferguson Jenkins? Hall-of-Famer? It mentions him in the article too.

I was confused by that too. At the end of the article there’s another author’s name. I’m guessing it’s an error because not even Rickey would so blatantly refer to himself in the third person.

That’s a really good point about the Magic that I hadn’t really thought about. I had my Jameer Nelson blinders on… individually, those guys have pretty much perpetual good-guy status in this city, at least until they make it rain.

For a franchise full of players that are pretty open about how fans and even other teams don’t give them enough credit, this is a pretty low-class move towards the Sixers.

If Philadlephia were a city where the NBA was something the fans truly cared about – I suppose it would matter – but the sixers come below college bsketball and when it existed the philadlep;hia soul in terms of fan support…they don’t have the core real fan base of the other ‘3 majors’ (in philadelphia the NHL is a major even though nationwide it isn’t really due to the fan base)

Spend some time West or North of Center City and then say no one truly cares about the NBA. They’re experiencing a low-point in attendance, for sure, but historically speaking, when the Sixers are able to field a consistently competitive team they are able to sell out games. I’d venture to say their fan base is probably comparable to the Flyers, they just have a much worse product.

Either way, they’re a playoff team that plays right across the street from the Bank. There would definitely have been some ill will if the Eagles had invited some Rockies players for pre-game festivities in Winter ’07 based on the fact that Troy Tulowitzki was a former wide-receiver for Villanova (maybe a bit far-fetched…).

I agree with some of this but Nelson is pretty unique. No college (amateur?) athlete has had as great of an impact on Philadelphia in my lifetime.

The eagles don’t play in the NBA do they, see how you’re comparing apples and hamburgers?

I know ‘some’ fans care about the sixers – i’m pretty active on two very active sixer blogs – but then again – they’re fifth if you count college basketball as ‘one’ animal -
