Blunted on Reality: Phillies at Mets Game Thread, August 21, 2009
Philadelphia Phillies at New York Mets, Aug 21, 2009 7:10 PM EDT
So raise your hand if you thought these four games at Citi Field in late August were going to be mostly free of drama. Liar.
The Phillies sit 14 1/2 games ahead of the Mets (16 games in the loss column), as New York's four biggest bats remain sidelined, as they have been for most of the season (minus David Wright).
It's Cole Hamels versus Mike Pelfrey, two young hurlers having similar and similarly disappointing seasons.
Discuss the game below.

According to SportsNite, Billy Wagner has been claimed off of waivers by the Red Sox. Don’t know if it’s true, but here’s hoping Burrell can still hit some game winners off of him down the stretch.

That would be sweet
sweet justice. I would friggin love Burrell hitting game winners off wags

All I have to look forward to tonight is watching the phils, and they are delayed. god I hate friday nights sometimes.

Gee whiz the Yanks are already up 2-0. I swear when I go back up to school, I’m going to be sooo pestered by my roommates and generally 50% of the students there. As much as I also detest Boston fans sometimes, Yankees fans are by far the more annoying of the two.

Just a quick question. Which team do we want to lose 2 of 3, Marlins or Braves?

Howard’s numbers likely to be better than Ibanez by season end.

1 umpire short? I never noticed that happen before.

did Pelfrey throw anything but heat in that inning?

It would be real nice if tonight were the night Cole gets back on track.
Three good pitches on 1-2, three fouls. Four now. It’s his whole year.

And then the well placed single. Unreal.

Leg injuries, like groins, take a long time to get back to 100%, especially if they come back to quick.

Ugh. Kind of thought the Mets might make this weekend their World Series.

Self-inflicted damage minimized, I guess. And Pelfrey had to stand around out there a long time.

Hmmm…my 2 year old just came out of his room and looked at the TV and went Phillies, hit the ball. I said, the Mets are up and say strike him out. Sheff had a 3-1 count then and he looks at the TV and goes, strike him out.

Cole is just like Lidge this year, he can’t locate his fastball.

battle of angry dudes
Angry Mike takes out his revenge on Angry Cole for getting hit with a pitch last AB by coming up and giving Cole the ol’backwards K treatment.
Meanwhile, back at the park, the offense has the Hamelsian 3-run hole to fill in.
We need another jooz night to make things all better.

crap. watch cole go cleanly through the fourth so he can be the fifth inning’s leadoff e-z out.
Dobbs out with some sort of leg injury.

Cole has the worse luck. It seems like the defense decides not to show up whenever he pitches.
by phillyphan9208 on Aug 21, 2009 9:47 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
regardless of the defense, he doesn’t have the same command and poise that got the team through the playoffs and WS. ugh

Yes, I agree. It is mostly that he cannot locate his fastball anywhere he wants it to go.

just watching the NFL game on fox tonight
They just showed the Cowboys season in review and a huge smile came on my face when they ended it with how the Eagles thrashed them 44-6. I feel so much better now.

Do you notice that when Cole is throwing low 90’s, high 80’s, he looks much better?
by phillyphan9208 on Aug 21, 2009 10:04 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
his last inning was pretty vintage. The changeup was bouncing behind the plate and his fastball location was better.
by Wet Luzinski on Aug 21, 2009 10:08 PM EDT up reply actions
Maybe his problem this year is that he is trying to overthrow the ball?

I call it playing baseball. They just swept the diamondbacks. So they lost a game against the Mets. Jeezus some of you guys here overreact to the most ridiculous things.

yeah, reacting negatively to pretty miserable losses is definitely ridiculous.
“some of you guys here overreact to the most ridiculous things”
Let’s not pussyfoot here. You don’t like me and you thrive on the opportunity to call me out. I don’t see you responding obnoxiously to every person who comes on here and makes a negative or stupid remark…mainly just me.
I’m cool with it at this point because I know you, just like me, have your quirks. Namely I am a generally pessimistic, negative person and you are a snide asswipe. So let me do me, and you can do you.
And I am really starting to come around to jemagee’s view that you are indeed an attention whore. But again, nobody’s perfect.
