Sixty-Nine, Dudes!: Phillies at Mets Game Thread, August 22, 2009
Philadelphia Phillies at New York Mets, Aug 22, 2009 7:10 PM EDT
Tonight, the New York Mets pay tribute to the 1969 World Championship team, and it just so happens they'll be playing the reigning World Champions. How proper.
J.A. Happ tries to keep on keepin' on, versus inexplicable Phillies killer Tim Redding.
Discuss the game below.

I thought it was going to be on MLB network but what I saw was just the highlighted game for MLB TV. The network will be showing Giants vs. Rockies at 8ET for those interested in that wild-card showdown.
With all the strength originally expected to be in the East and Central divisions (Phillies, Mets, Cubs, Cards, Brewers) it’s interesting that the wild card winner could well be Giants or Rockies.

Great to hear.
Enjoy the game tonight. I expect a full report on CitiField (I’m dying to get down there at some point, I hear it’s great).
It was.
Barely. It didn’t look like it at first on TV either.
I knew Redding was good against the Phils, but jeez.
Yikes

Long drive into deep right center field! This ball is OUTTA HEEERRRREE!

Hopefully Happ will impersonate Lee tonight and throw alot of strikes and strike outs w/out hits or runs by the Mets. Good start!
…and hopefully Tim Redding will impersonate, you know, Tim Redding. (Instead of the reincarnation of Greg Maddux that he becomes every time he pitches against the Phils.)
If you didn't make the obligatory comment, I would have.
Redding would make a fine addition to the Phillies organization, even it he just pitched at Lehigh Valley forever.

that ball by Francoeur was a hard play – humpback liner right infront of 2nd on one short hop and throw to first. Slick.

Notice Happ looks as the ball goes by while Redding threw his glove at the ball and got it. I know, I am not there but did you see Happ just look at it as it went by????
Not sure what you’re trying to say – that Happ should have made a play and looked like he didn’t care? That seems extreme.

Happ
Just a note on the guy who is being called the next Kyle Kendrick:
League Leaders – 2009
• Ranks 5th in NL in ERA (2.66) • Ranks 10th in NL in WHIP (1.16)
• Ranks 1st in NL in W% (.818) • Ranks 8th in NL in CG (2)
Comparisons to Kendrick 2007 version seem to be based on high percentage of wins, relatively low strikeouts and what some see as a lot of luck. Kendrick made 20 starts in 2007 and had a nice 3.87 ERA and a 10-4 record. Gave up 16 HRs and had only 49 strikeouts in 121 IP. Happ, before today, has made 17 starts, had a 2.65 ERA, a 9-2 record overall (including his relief work). He’s given up 13 HRs, has 93 strikeouts in 132 IP. So his strikeout rate of .7/inning is like Kendrick’s .4/inning? Happ has two complete games and often goes 7 innings, while Kendrick rarely got past the 6th if I remember correctly. And tonight he’s struggled to get through 5 innings giving up one run. I’m sorry, I just don’t see Kyle Kendrick out there.
by phillyinportland on Aug 22, 2009 9:21 PM EDT reply actions
He's been getting belted, and it's not just tonight.
I do not have a tremendous level of confidence that his level of success is sustainable. He’s danced through raindrops an awful lot.

I hear what you’re saying, and I understand you fear he won’t continue, but what part of his results worries you? He goes deep into games, he usually works his way out of trouble, he’s not giving up a lot of home runs. And the Phillies win almost every time he starts. That’s what confuses me with the comparison to Kendrick.
by phillyinportland on Aug 22, 2009 9:28 PM EDT up reply actions

I think your concerns are fair...
…but I also think there’s reason to be excited about Happ. His BABIP and strand rate indicate regression, but since the beginning of July, his peripherals have improved significantly: 6.7 BB/9, 2.7 K/9, 0.7 HR/9. I’ve continually said that I don’t think he’s more than a very solid 4th starter in the end, but I don’t think there’s any reason to panic here.
Can't say Happ was lazy on that play.
He did everything but juggle chainsaws to get it to Howard.

Koosman
Funny thought came to mind when I saw Jerry Koosman was at the 1969 Mets reunion today. Koosman was convicted of tax evasion earlier this year and was facing prison time back in May. I guess he got probation. His explanation: he thought he’d found the loophole that meant he didn’t really have to pay taxes as long as he wasn’t a federal employee or a resident of Washington, D.C.

I know Ibanez has cooled off...
…but I expect more of him than that AB right there. A ground ball to the right side gets you a run; a fly ball gets you a run; just about anything you do right there gets you a run. Relax, see a couple of pitches, and then at least make a productive out. Just don’t swing at the first goddamn pitch.
Braves won...
If anyone wants to know.

Sounds about right. I can vaguely remember a time in 2001 when it looked like the Phillies might get three half-decent pitchers out of the Schilling trade. Padilla, of course, turned in some good years for the Phillies, but that was about it for the best Phillies starter between Carlton and … Cliff Lee.

interesting fact:
ScottLauber on Twitter: Most homers by a Mets player at Citi Field this year: 5 (Wright, Sheffield and Tatis). Chase Utley has 4 homers at Citi Field.
I think they were pointing out that Mark Reynolds had four there a few weeks ago, when Wright had the most with five. Tough park for a weak-hitting home team.
