Bruntlett? Really?!?
How is this guy still in the majors, much less on a Championship team?!?
Bye, Big Stew and JJ :(
SMALL BALL?!?!? AGAINST A DUDE WITH A +6 ERA???

Shane is fast – bunting for single?

Already making Ollie work. Where was this patience against pitchers like say, I don’t know, Cy Redding?
That is true, at least relative to Ollie P.

How the hell is Bruntlett still playing baseball?

Even better than the wild 9th in Florida early in the season?

Werth waiting for.
Meanwhile, I can’t imagine a more frustrating pitcher to play D behind or root for as a fan than Perez.

Was thinking the same thing. I would consider platooning Raul and Fransisco for the rest of the season.
Is Manuel trying to get fired now? I mean I know he doesn’t need much help

When is the last time
you saw a pitcher yanked in the middle of an AB (without an injury)?
My goodness. Hard to believe that’s the same Perez we couldn’t touch last year.

Oh wow
That was not Martinez’s fault. Ibanez should have never picked that ball out.

buh?
I’m just following this game on the internet. Somebody tell me what the &%$ just happened?
Pagan hits ball into the right center gap, gets stuck under the padding in the wall. Shane throws up arms, trying to get a dead ball call, umps don’t call it, Raul picks ball out of padding and throws it in, but too late, Pagan inside the park HR.

cheers
oh shane… I thought he learned not to throw his arms up anymore. Sounds like an incredible stroke of luck for the Mets…
MAybe the long top of the inning threw Pedro off.

Looked really good on those two strikeouts. Of course, it is the bottom of the JV Mets’ lineup.
http://www.thegoodphight.com
Which means he should be able to get through the 2nd easily.

Wow, what a game – I mean inning. The Phillies bullpen will probably get an opportunity to get some work in today.
by phillyinportland on Aug 23, 2009 1:53 PM EDT reply actions
only the Phillies
could be on the bad end of the “stuck under the padding” ground rule in two new parks (first CBP with Burrell—I remember this— I think against the Marlins iirc?) and today with the Mets at Citi.
Still makes me laugh that the Mets have 1 player who has 10+ homeruns…and it is 10 homeruns.

Rockies
I just noticed they are coming on strong in the runs scored and slugging department. This is the first time I’ve seen Phillies second in NL OPS in a long time. Looks like the wild card team entry this year could be a choice between the excellent top of the rotation of the Giants and the run-scoring ability of the Rockies.
by phillyinportland on Aug 23, 2009 2:03 PM EDT reply actions
the 14-run mashing of the Giants last night must have helped. OTOH, the Rockies gave up 11.

Slow down the game
I just saw the same thing and was amazed to learn that a batter can have the skill to hit well with RISP – and that skilll is being able to slow down the game. Wow. I guess all batters should be working on that – whatever the heck that means.

Sullivan
I’m not quite sure how I’ve neglected to note that this guy has had nearly 80 ABs vs. the Phils and had raked us.
Interesting point, since I’m not even sure who Corey Sullivan is – was he on the Marlins before?
by phillyinportland on Aug 23, 2009 2:34 PM EDT up reply actions
see, that’s my point. Very stealthy. But the CSN crew quoted some amazing stat where he’s hit somethin’ like .350+ vs us.

by Wet Luzinski on Aug 23, 2009 2:42 PM EDT up reply actions
I get that Schmidt is in his corner. And I even respect his loyalty. To Mike Schmidt, Rose was the FA who pulled the thorn out of the Phillies late 70s paw. But unlike, say, the Black Sox, he had no financial incentive to bet on baseball. He did so while playing/managing, and lied about it to boot. It’ s a sad situation, he has HOF cred, but he broke a rule that is way clearer, and way more serious to the integrity of the game, than, say, Romero’s GNC stupidity.

TMac: “Oh what a play by Eric Bruntlett!”
and —-he was absolutely right!
what has gotten into him today? Much more of this and he might get POG honors.
Beardo
has always been the man; don’t know why you guys have been raggin on him so much. He doesn’t get enough at bats to get into a rythym, but he’s always been awesome of defense. Glad he’s on our squad. Don’t want him to play everyday, but glad to save some pine for him.

Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
Okay, I think I get this. If we score, Pedro gives up runs. If we don’t Pedro is shut-down. So uh…maybe don’t score?
As long as your direct correlation holds true, sure.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
Jimmy still does not run out the play when he hits in the infield. He just jogs up the line. Am I wrong?
Didn't Charlie bench him for that last year?

who plays for him if he does bench him today?

I was not making the comment to bench him, I was just making the comment as why is he so stubborn and just not play baseball the right way!

yes, wondering why he is not making it an issue this year. Or maybe he will. Hopefully we will not see next time he bats whether he is or not.

I feel like this is mostly what well see from him, but there’ll be one game where he’s The Pedro of Old. That should be fun.

let's go
got Beardo comin up again this inning. Big things, boys, big things…
I’m totally dropping Utley from my fantasy team and picking Bruntlett up.
(I don’t have a fantasy team.)
that's not the Bruntlett I know
Chase obviously borrowed the beard for that at bat. Honestly, would we be able to tell them apart?
I don’t want to see Cory Sullivan up as the tying run – and I won’t! Checked him out and found out he was on the Rockies till last year. Somehow I forgot his great hitting vs. the Phillies.

Did Hernandez get a good swing on that pitch he hit for a double? GameCast spot has it way outside and landing in shallow left near the foul line.
by phillyinportland on Aug 23, 2009 3:52 PM EDT reply actions
Madson left it high and outside, he smacked it just beyond the reach of Feliz down the LF line, and I’m sure you noticed the 0-2 count…
by Wet Luzinski on Aug 23, 2009 3:55 PM EDT up reply actions
Madson can sure be puzzling at times. Just when it looks like hitters have no chance against him he gets careless or misses his spots.

Francoeur caught it and twisted his wrist. 2B ump called it a trap. Bruntlett ran to 3B. Umps conferred and overturned play. Manuel got tossed.

CSN reporting
it is the first time game has ended on a UA triple play. Which means…
ERIC BRUNTLETT MAY GO TO THE HALL OF FAME.
Yup – according to SABR, there have been two other 9th inning unassisted triple plays, but in both cases, the home team was in the field.
Yes, but one team was winning and the other was losing so one of those situations was the end of the game.
