Manic Monday: Phillies at Mets Game Thread, August 24, 2009
Philadelphia Phillies at New York Mets, Aug 24, 2009 1:10 PM EDT
Cliff Lee makes his fifth start for the Phillies in the final game of the four game series in New York, looking to win the final three. It will be Lee's third day game out of five Phillies starts, which means I'll have missed three of his games.
Bobby Parnell goes for the Mets.
Discuss the game below.

Go Phil$
Let’s see a nice and easy blowout today for some easy $$$ here.
I’m hung over and don’t feel like sweating out a game. lol

I think Keith Hernandez might be drunk. Certainly ornery.

I don’t mean to jinx anything here, but a pitcher like Bobby Parnell should be hamburger meat against our lineup. A young righthander with not-great control who relies heavily on his fastball? Break out the whupping sticks.

Subjectively at least, it seems like Werth is ultra-streaky but his streaks are so short that his splits all look ultra-consistent.

So if Utley hits two homers today, he’ll have more homers at Citi Field than anyone in the league, including the Mets.

5 if you count Bruntlett’s booted ball which was ruled a single.

yeah…I’m ‘watching’ on gamecast. It reads utley made two errors, one to let him on, one to let him score, but the box score only lists 1 error.
by Bilzo on Aug 24, 2009 1:31 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
so let me get this straight….our infield has mis played 4 of the past 5 balls hit to them?
At least the one they handled cleanly was a triple play, but in all fairness…all he had to do there was catch the equivalent of a ball thrown right at him, step on a base and tag a guy standing up who’d stopped running. Yeesh.
by Bilzo on Aug 24, 2009 1:30 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Ok – if ESPN is to be believed that’s a 3 base throwing error on utley – did he throw it to the bronx?

I can’t remember if I’d ever seen a 2B drop a pop-up before Kelly Johnson did it against us last year. Now there have been four in the space of a year: Johnson, Castillo, Utley, and some other guy on the highlights yesterday.

I don’t really think it should be an error. He only lost the ball after it bounced off the top of the wall. It’s flukey.
by JasonB on Aug 24, 2009 1:37 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
according to CSN, it is a unearned run.
by DeanH on Aug 24, 2009 1:37 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yes, because the sac fly would have been the third out if not for Utley’s error.
by taco pal on Aug 24, 2009 1:38 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Uh? Sheffield ran to 3rd on his hit. Utley had nothing to do w/ him. I think CSN is incorrect and ya’ll are right. But, time will tell.
by DeanH on Aug 24, 2009 1:42 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
If Utley had caught Pagan’s pop-up, then Sheffield’s triple would have been with two outs. So the sac fly would have ended the inning instead of knocking him in. So it’s an unearned run, QED.

I meant, that atleast I can make my own judgement on what the pitches are, cognicent of the camera angle. With an online representation, I can’t. Plus, I don’t feel very involved just watching a game cast.
I don’t want to invest in mlb tv this late into the season. But I probably will the next.

Question: are both of the runs Lee’s given up unearned? I only have the recap, and I’m not certain exactly what events led to the runs.

First run scored on the first Mets batter of the game. Pagan popped up, Utley dropped it and then threw it away, and Pagan circled the bases. Then, one out later, Sheffield tripled and then he scored on a sac fly.
by taco pal on Aug 24, 2009 3:10 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
since Pagan popup should have been an out, the sac fly would have been out nr 3, hence no ER.

Thanks – I knew Sheffield was unearned, but couldn’t figure out the first run

Pagan “Wait ref, I am Pagan. That was suppose to be a home run again”.

Bruntlett sending jersey to Hall of Fame
on Phillies site. So, what are ya’ll thoughts. I don’t want to put in writing mine!
by DeanH on Aug 24, 2009 3:16 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
that’s funny. it’s the only way he’ll ever get there except to buy a ticket to get in.
by SmilingJPhilsPhan on Aug 24, 2009 3:18 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
He already has something at the HoF from the WS last year. Cleats, maybe—can’t remember—but it was something from Game 3.
by doubleh on Aug 24, 2009 3:20 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
well, i’m pretty sure he won’t get there as a player
by SmilingJPhilsPhan on Aug 24, 2009 3:22 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don’t think anyone would argue with you on that.

Reminiscent of that night when Steve Jeltz homered from both sides of the plate, except more so.
by taco pal on Aug 24, 2009 3:18 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Damn. I have to start checking the schedule.

Omar Minaya once traded Cliff Lee, Grady Sizemore, & Brandon Phillips to Cleveland for Bartolo Colon.
by JasonB on Aug 24, 2009 3:30 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
So we can thank the Mets for giving us Lee?
by DeanH on Aug 24, 2009 3:32 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Indeed. People used to think he was really smart back then.
by taco pal on Aug 24, 2009 3:32 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
It seems like Minaya has made very few “neutral” moves—either enormous successes (Santana trade) or stunning FAILs like that deal.
by dajafi on Aug 24, 2009 3:34 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
The Santana deal was a little different though. He would only approve a trade to a team that would give him a giant new contract within 72 hours. If I remember right, Omar was basically only bidding against the Yankees and maybe another team or two.
by JasonB on Aug 24, 2009 3:37 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
It was a success obviously, but I’m not sure it displays any large amount of GM talent on Omar’s part.

Leadoff double stranded.
Seemed like Lee “struggled” today, yet he finishes (?) with seven innings, zero earned runs.

and no walks

If that ends Lee's day...
…he now has a 0.68 ERA and 0.75 WHIP.

Halladay wouldn’t have allowed a hit yet. And he’d be slugging 4.00.
Also Drabek and Brown will never appear in a major league game.

I assume ya’ll heard the the Met’s are happy with Mineya and Manual and are sticking w/ them for next year as of now. I think that is wonderful for the Phillies.
by DeanH on Aug 24, 2009 3:34 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Technically Wilpon said Minaya was safe and then Minaya said Manuel was his guy
and as far as i’m concerned it doesn’t mean squat – i still think he could get fired…but even if he ain’t fired I expect his ability to sign long term deals will be heavily curtailed.
From things I’ve read, the Mets are just an organization run by buffons and idiots

That whole mess with the minor league coach, Minaya, and the reporter certainly seemed to indicate that it wasn’t the most professional organization.
by JasonB on Aug 24, 2009 3:42 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Will the Mets be a threat next year? I know they’ll be better than they are now since Reyes, Wright, and Beltran will be back, but they have lots of weaknesses and no farm system.

CHOP gives Pagan a good final memory of the Phillies!

So assuming no Lidge meltdown, we’ll have won every one of our last 13 games except the ones started by Cole Hamels.

We were sitting in the stands Saturday night making joke after joke about him not running for his racist bosses, pitchers, teammates, et al

Looks like the Met fans were doing the same a minute ago… I’m watching the SNY feed and they’re showing fans jeering him pretty heavily.

Was he? I must admit – there were two on and that smash that turned into a triple play could have easily been a hit that scored at least one run

Pagan with a nice play on a deep Rollins flyout.

Lidge in even with the four-run lead.
I can see this either way, but on balance I don’t think I like it.
by dajafi on Aug 24, 2009 4:10 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
What are the odds we see a nice, clean, 1-2-3 inning by Lidge here?
by Freddyd on Aug 24, 2009 4:11 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
If the defense did it’s job we would have yesterday.

Seeing Lidge come into a ballgame these days reminds me of Chris Rock’s take on married life.
If you’re in a good relationship, chances are you’re bored out of your f’***in mind. All good relationships are boring. The only exciting relationships are bad ones. You never know what’s gonna happen tomorrow when you’re in a bad relationship. You never know when you’re gonna walk through the door and go, “Hey! You gave me crabs!” That’s exciting! I wanna know what tomorrow’s gonna bring!
Try to be a little more boring, Brad.

This is the probably the least scary thing I’ve heard today…
The heart of the MEts lineup is due up in the bottom of the 9th “Sheffield, Tatis, & Murphy”

nniiiiiiiiiice!!! 1-2-3 by Lidge!!
Now that wasn’t too hard now was it? Here’s hoping Lidge can build on this and return to half of last year’s form.
