Ruben "Indicates" Six Man Rotation?
NOTES: Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said J.A. Happ isn't going to the bullpen to make room for Pedro Martinez . Amaro also indicated the team could employ a six-man rotation when Martinez comes off the DL.
Does anyone think this is permenate or is it more likely the first starter to get shaky will be sent to the Pen or DL (Moyer? Happ? Martinez?)
Here is the link, the comments are in the note at the bottom.

What if we go with a 5½ man rotation by pitching Blanton and Lee every five games while pitching everyone else in order around that schedule. So starting tomorrow it would go like this:
Blanton, Hamels, Moyer, Happ, Lee, Blanton, Martinez, Hamels, Moyer, Lee, Blanton, Happ, Martinez, Hamels, Lee, Blanton, Moyer, Happ, Martinez, Blanton, Lee….

Sure. With the passion of hundred burning suns. Damn you, Hamels, I’ll get you yet!

Is your rationale
for having Hamels part of the ‘rotating rotation’ to give him rest before the playoffs?
I’d be inclined to make him part of the every 5 games part of the rotation (with Blanton and Lee) to try to work him into a groove before the playoffs roll around. I know he has struggled, but we need him come playoff time.

Yes, because of his recent struggles and Verducci. It would be a judgment call though.

There is no point in babying Happ if you aren’t going to baby Hamels. Hamels is younger.

I don’t really think we need to baby either to be honest. I’m ok with the 4 top guys going in a normal rotation and swapping in Martinez and Moyer based on opponents (i.e. Moyer against the Marlins, Pedro against everyone else)

We don’t “need” to do anything, but having a luxury is a good thing. Let’s use it.

Blanton
I think it should be noted that Blanton is always filthy in Augest and crappy in September, so having him on 5 days rest might work for now, but when the wheels fall off, run him out there every 6th day.

Just as an aside – isn’t it hte managers job to make the decisions with the 25 man roster after the GM builds it?

I would surmise that he and Charlie probably spoke before he gave that quote.

I was thinking about doing a long post today on the different aspects of the rotation decision. Glad they resolved this before I burned a couple hours…
Though maybe “resolved” isn’t the word. There’s no easy answer: Moyer deserves to get the boot on merit, but he hasn’t been terrible, and it’s hard to see how he adds anything in relief. Happ is obviously performing too well to demote to the bullpen, and a cranky Pedro could be a harmful distraction (plus I’m coming around on the idea that he’ll be decent-to-good for them). Hamels probably could use some rest, but maybe he needs to work through whatever his issue is. And Lee and Blanton you definitely want on the mound every fifth day; they’re horses, and taking them out of the rhythm they have going might compromise their effectiveness.
I read that after Aug. 18, the Phils play 27 games in 27 days. At that point, maybe you go to a six-man. For the next 12 days, though, it’s going to be bumpy.

Maybe they’ll put pedro in moyers next turn and hope he’s either filthy or awful and make the decision easier?

Bruntlett can't hit
but I doubt they give him the boot given the defensive flexibility he provides them. He’s their only backup middle infielder and can play 3rd and the outfield (fairly well too). Plus, the addition of Francisco means that he doesn’t have to be the righthanded bat off the bench. Now he’s just a glove, which is good, because he simply can’t hit.

I agree but
in all honesty I do not think that we are going to part ways with Moyer out of the starting rotation. He is either on for the night or he’s off, plain and simple and I believe that Martinez would be more consistent. But after Matrinez’s last start in the minors with so many strike outs for the amount of innings he pitched I see him being a long reliever in the pen. He has the stuff to get outs, but honestly I don’t think he has the endurance. Granted neither does Moyer, but Moyers stuff in the pen would not be too good while I believe Martinez would be a decent starter and premier out of the pen.

yeah i totally agree. i need to see martinez start a game and well go from there. i think he has a chip on his shoulder and is the best shape any 37 year old pitcher can be oh boy. i say if moyer continues his struggles against the marlins this sunday put him in the bullpen.

He was on 950 saying they might go with a 6 man rotation for a couple weeks, but not for the rest of the year.
That said, I don’t think giving Cole some extra rest would be the worst idea.

Personally, I think that Ruben is hoping that Martinez will faulter so they can throw him in the bullpen….kinda like what we did with Chan Ho Park.

Let's settle.
Every 5th day, we should let Moyer pitch the first second and third innings of a game, then we bring in Pedro to finish.. Problem solved. Give the GM job with the Nationals.
Seriously though, I think Pedro would be very affective in the pen and we may very well need him to pitch 2 or 3 innings if our starters begin regularly getting into trouble in the fourth or fifth inning again. Chan Ho can’t be the fall back guy every night.
Personally I’d like to see Pedro replace Moyer in the rotation (it hurts me to say that). However, I don’t think the Phillies are going to move Moyer anywhere.
