Austin Hyatt
Might be worth keeping an eye on this Austin Hyatt, who was mentioned in the article about Matt Way from the Breakfast Links earlier this week. They just moved him from the bullpen into the rotation to replace Way in Williamsport. His stats out of the pen: 12 G, 26.2 IP, 1 ER, 1 HR, 4 BB, 40 K (!). In his first two innings tonight, he faced seven batters: 1 BB, 6 K. He was a 15th round pick this year out of the University of Alabama.

Thanks for pointing this out. Kevin Goldstein had some praise for him this morning as well.
Austin Hyatt, RHP, Phillies (Short-season Williamsport)
Thursday’s stats: 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 9 K
A 15th-round pick in June out of Alabama, Hyatt was one of those cheap senior signs who throws strikes, has a good changeup, and is a solid organization arm. The shocker here is that his fastball is suddenly up to 94 and he’s been the New York-Penn League’s most dominating arm, allowing just one run in 31 2/3 innings while compiling a 49/5 K/BB ratio and giving up just 14 hits. At 23, he needs to move quickly and is probably no more than a reliever in the end, but he’s certainly more than just a solid organizational arm.

That reminds me, someone needs to warn this guy to stay away from Jimmy Fallon.
There is, in fact, an Austin Hyatt.

I’d been curious when we’d get a report on Hyatt’s stuff, and Goldstein’s news is very good. BA had this brief blurb on Hyatt in their draft database…
Righthander Austin Hyatt, the staff ace this year, is a quality senior who is a command-oriented fastball/changeup pitcher, with the changeup his best pitch.I figured he was just carving up inexperienced hitters with good command in a pitching friendly league, but the news that his fastball is “suddenly up to 94” is great. It seems like his stuff has really played up out of the pen, and while it makes sense to switch him to starter for the time being, a solid fastball and great change-up with excellent command would make for a pretty good bullpen arm in the end.
