Picking Up the Pieces: Mets at Phillies Game Thread the First, September 13, 2009
New York Mets at Philadelphia Phillies, Sep 13, 2009 1:05 PM EDT
Moving on from yesterday's atrocity will be a daunting task. What better way than with a doubleheader, and Kyle Kendrick starting Game One!?
John Maine goes for the Mets.
Discuss the game below.

Everyone must be watching the Birds FAIL against the panthers.

Wow
Last I looked the Panthers were up 7-0. Maybe this could be a big day for Philadelphia sports fans.

Let’s not let the Eagles overshadow what Kendrick is doing on the mound.

My GameCast delivery was all screwed up. Had it still 1-0 Phillies in the 2nd inning, but said Kendrick had pitched 3 shutout innings. So I’m hoping the situation hasn’t changed by the time I get caught up.

It hasn’t, Kendricks pitching great so far

Nice to hear
Just like we all figured, right?

I’m watching the Eagles game primarily but have the Phils on in the background, and I gotta say… Kendrick doesn’t look half bad. A lot of grounders, the change-up is decent enough to keep the lefites at bay… he could have a future as a major league starter yet. Just not with the Phillies, in all likelihood.

I have them going side by side, and I think Kendrick is doing as well as we could hope—pitching his game, getting grounders, protecting the lead.

Why not with the Phils? They have a rotation spot open next year because of Pedro, so…

Ben Fransisco seems to homer every time he is given a start.

thru 5 2/3
12 grounders, 2 flyouts, 3 Ks (the first three of the game)
Vintage good Kendrick.

94 pitches for Kendrick through 7.
So he’s probably done. Now, can the bullpen possibly get six outs?
by dajafi on Sep 13, 2009 3:06 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I’ve got my fingers crossed. Tyler Walker? Andrew Carpenter?

Does Kendrick have themakeup to be a closer?
by Wet Luzinski on Sep 13, 2009 3:08 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
well, at least McNabb walked off under his own power.

And jroll promptly follows with a 1 pitch pop up

That’s infuriating – you’re getting ready to put your pitcher out there for an 8th inning, he’s on base, so you might want to let him catch his breath a little, and you swing at the first pitch. Baseball 101 should be on Rollins reading list.

Phils again are something like 0 for 7 or 0 for 8 with RISP today.
Then again, the one recent game in which they hit well with RISP was yesterday. So…

Cholly being Cholly. Should have taken Kendrick out. I knew he would do something like that.
by FuquaManuel on Sep 13, 2009 3:27 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
His determination to get as much out of Kendrick may cost him, which would be a shame after seven great innings today.
by phillyinportland on Sep 13, 2009 3:30 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
His third MLB home run in almost 500 at bats. Awesome.

Walker
At least it looks like he got the right guy in there to get two key outs. Keeping my fingers crossed for the ninth.

Great time to get his first hit of the year.

Who woulda thought?
That makes me feel better.

What I don’t like is two of the three batters due up for the Mets are having good days: Francouer and Thole.

Well, good players against us at any rate…

Lidge
For the three-run lead save. Against the Mets. At home. That’s about as good a combo as you could ask for now.

Seriously, how many seeing eye singles does Francoeur hit against us?
by PhillyFriar on Sep 13, 2009 3:45 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Yeah but come on, how was Francoeur’s single his fault?
by PhillyFriar on Sep 13, 2009 3:46 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
You gotta figure if Lidge can’t hold this, he can’t hold anything and should be shut down for the remainder of the season and playoffs right?
by FuquaManuel on Sep 13, 2009 3:46 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
At the least I think they’d have to look into a closer by committee situation until someone shows they can do the job as closer.

My Dolphins are stinking up Atlanta. Please win here.

Wow, another Phillies/Dolphins fan. Pleased to meet you. Not so pleased to see this week’s game and this year’s schedule. =p

Back at ya’ Raptor. Fins played horrible.

Sweet Jebus. Trouble ahead, trouble behind.

Lidge’s slider down and in to lefties is just a recipe for disaster. So many left-handed hitters love to just golf the ball to right field, and the slider breaks right into their wheelhouse.
Ugh.
by PhillyFriar on Sep 13, 2009 3:53 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Well, phillyinportland called who would be trouble. Then again, prognosticating doom when Lidge takes the mound in the 9th isn’t exactly going out on a limb.
by RaptorLC on Sep 13, 2009 3:53 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Not to be off topic, but since I’m not watching, why does Lidge always give up the runner to second on indifference. Couldn’t they hold a guy on first for a change?
by phillyinportland on Sep 13, 2009 3:55 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
With Lidge’s delivery to the plate… no, they can’t hold anyone.
by PhillyFriar on Sep 13, 2009 3:56 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
They keep getting runs on singles with no chance for forceouts. That’s a recipe for disaster.
by phillyinportland on Sep 13, 2009 3:57 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Lidge is falling off the mound on every fastball…did he do that last year?
by FuquaManuel on Sep 13, 2009 3:53 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
This is like a recurring nightmare
by Boundforbeach on Sep 13, 2009 3:56 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
That 8th inning run is proving huge. Sad that that is the case.

Dear god, is it over? Is it actually over?
by RaptorLC on Sep 13, 2009 3:57 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
This hanging by a thread and blowing late game leads has just got to stop.
by Boundforbeach on Sep 13, 2009 3:58 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
At this point...
Who do they bring in if game 2 is at a save situation? Madson or Myers?
by RaptorLC on Sep 13, 2009 4:02 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
my vote is Myers. Last night notwithstanding, we need to see if he can handle the closers role in the coming weeks…
by Boundforbeach on Sep 13, 2009 4:04 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
What the hell. I’d see how Myers does. Or Chan Ho if I’m feeling particularly contrary.
by phillyinportland on Sep 13, 2009 4:05 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
And meanwhile, in other baseball news...
Washington is leading 7-1 in the 6th inning of a rain delayed game. If they hold on (or the game is called… please please please call it?), they’ll actually win the series.
And meanwhile, Atlanta is kicking some Cardinal ass once again.
Finally, if the Phillies take out the Mets in game two, the Mets will be mathematically eliminated from winning the division, and I think officially out of the wild card race to boot should Colorado win another game.
