Pedro's Destiny: Mets at Phillies Game Thread the Second, September 13, 2009
New York Mets at Philadelphia Phillies, Sep 13, 2009 8:05 PM EDT
Pedro Martinez faces his former teammates tonight in Philadelphia as the Phillies try to take 3 of 4 from the Mets. They face the inexplicably dominant-against-the-Phillies Tim Redding, who the Mets have wisely decided to keep on the payroll just to kill the Phillies. If they were smart, they'd just sit him against the rest of the league. A Phillies victory would officially eliminate the Mets from playoff contention.
Discuss the game below.

I actually saw some stats that might help explain what seems like a horrible tendancy. I read this a while ago, so my information will probably not be very accurate, but League wide (I think all MLB) First pitch is usually .320 average, 1-0 to 3-0 goes steadily up to .370 or some other really high number, 0-1, 1-2, and 0-2 goes down to about .200 and then even counts like 2-2 and full count were about .300.
So league wide, it seemed like it actually would make sense to swing at the first pitch batting average wise if you thought it was going to be called for a strike. Of course, there are a lot of other things to think about, OBP being a big one, but it was interesting to see that swinging at the first pitch is not all that crazy.
I'm no lawyer...
… but I’m pretty sure we’re more likely to face a Congressional Medal of Honor than murder charges if we kill Joe Morgan. How does this guy still have a job?
I agree Mr. Morgan . . .
. . . a sample size of ONE justifies your assertion that you should never run in that situation.
Fwargh....
So ONE hit with RISP is a start, right? Right? Blargh.
What the fuck...
… are “opps.” Good Lord, theyr’e on to Werth as “a winning player” and “clutch.” I am going to throw something through my TV. Do these guys intentionally parody the caricatures of themselves?
they think they’re appealing to a wider audience but I suspect they’re actually turning casual fans off to the sport
http://www.thegoodphight.com
No, unfortunately I think they’re turning the casual fan onto the sport. It suddenly hit me today that most people (including me at times) feel the need to believe people have a certain clutch ability, that they perform best when the pressure is highest, and the more you can show that the ability to hit (or pitch) in the clutch is due to skill and luck rather than “clutchiness” the more the average fan will either rebel or give up on baseball.

Pedro is perfectly aligned with his career numbers this year – hitting .100 for his career, 1-10 this year.
So the conundrum is….do I watch the game and make a quiz for tomorrow knowing that the more aggravated i get, the harder the quiz will be…..or do I wait til tomorrow to make it?
First question (answer to be determined):
Do you believe in God after seeing last night’s closer? My guess: Myers gets the save and God’s existence is reaffirmed. But I’ve been wrong before.
Too bad most of them aren’t baseball fans. The question should be – the Redskins lost yesterday, does this deny the existence of God?
by WanderingMoses on Sep 13, 2009 9:12 PM EDT up reply actions
Normally that would prove His existence.
But only Satan would root for the Giants.
Sometimes your watching the ball rather than seeing it.
Think about that.
Remember the Mets juggernaut before Minaya?
Those fourth place finishes were orchestrated by Phillips.
All I know is
hand eye cross dominance is key. I’m pretty sure that was Wordsworth.
Lidge
I was watching the Baseball Tonight Cavalcade of Stars this afternoon and they did a big piece on how they believe Lidge is tipping his pitches, so batters know when it’s a slider and when it’s a fastball and that explains why he’s getting hit so much harder this season. Might be something to it, cause something sure is going on with Lidge.
by phillyinportland on Sep 13, 2009 9:15 PM EDT reply actions
possible, but wouldn’t our pitching coaches already know this if there was any truth to it?
by Boundforbeach on Sep 13, 2009 9:17 PM EDT up reply actions
Good point
You would think if it had been a problem and, let’s say Pedro Martinez came over from the Mets and knew what they looked for when Lidge pitched, he’d tell them. On the other hand it may be something so entwined with his delivery of the two pitches – and from what I’ve heard Lidge throws only two pitches – that he can’t disguise whatever this clue is.

So far it looks like another pitchers’ duel like Martinez vs. Lincecum.
by phillyinportland on Sep 13, 2009 9:34 PM EDT reply actions
I like how the announcers keep talking about Ibanez's recent struggles.
Raul’s stats over the last 14 days: .310, .341, .667. I can live with that. But also, he’s having problem keeping his head on the ball (other than all video the have of him keeping his head on the ball).
This is why we need to hit
You’re not going to shut down the Mets forever.
Redding is around 85 pitches, correct?
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
PHILLIES still in 3 week long funk
we cant save a game.
we cant hit in RISP at all.
we are making a lot more errors …
meanwhile the Rockies … are playing the best baseball in the NL…
I dont think the phillies will get the NLDS
You mean...
… we’re going to miss the playoffs? Or we’re going out in the first round?
Either is possible. My money is on the latter.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
oh"WE" will win the NL east
but go out in the NLDS … maybe if we are lucky in the NLCS
11-10 over last three weeks, roughly (last three sundays to date, inclusive)
and today’s 2nd game is not over.
Teams and games played over that stretch Mets 5 (and in progress), Pirates 3, Braves 3, Astros 4, Giants 3, Nats 3.
10 games vs. teams that are in it, sort of, and 6 vs rivals who want to spoil badly.
If that’s a “funk”, I’ll take it. 12-10 isn’t awful, considering 12 games were on the road.

It’s not even that it’s not the correct strike zone… it’s that he’s not even consistent from pitch to pitch. Sometimes it’s low, sometimes it’s high — it’s legitimately awful. Even if your zone sucks, just be consistent with it.
