Elevator Overload: Nationals at Phillies Game Thread, September 16, 2009
Washington Nationals at Philadelphia Phillies, Sep 16, 2009 7:05 PM EDT
Rematch! Joe Blanton looks to rebound from his terrible start last week in Washington, versus Livan Hernandez, who was surprisingly good.
Discuss the game below.

Cookies not looking so strong. I seriously would’ve considered swapping starters if possible. He pitches pretty good against everybody else, and like a poop sandwich against the Nats. Maybe…..quit pitching him against the Nats.

Check out this link.
See anything here that is an indicator of why somebody might be hitting poorly this year?

Jimmy Popup?
If that’s what you’re referring to, question is whether that’s cause or effect.
by dajafi on Sep 16, 2009 7:17 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
yep…..
For those of you not clicking…
Rollins pops up 11.1% of PAs. Of all MLB hitters in the top 30 in PAs, Rollins ranks 2rd in pop-up age behind Vernon Wells (13.0).
Whats worse…Jimmy’s FB/GB numbers are 29%/41%. That means that when he does put it in the air, he’s keeping it in the infield about 35% of the time. That’s atrocious.
by Bilzo on Sep 16, 2009 7:21 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
also gidp was much higher than it should be
especially with his supposed speed

Vic is 10.5%, or 4th worst amongst the top 30 in PAs behind:
Vernon Wells
Rollins
Granderson (11.0%)
That’s some pretty bad performance amongst your desired OBP guys with speed.
by Bilzo on Sep 16, 2009 8:57 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
BP does not include popups as flyballs. So it’s not quite 35% of the time. It’s 11%/(11%+29%), so it’s about 27-28%.
by Matt Swartz on Sep 16, 2009 8:22 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Thanks for clarifying Matt. But you’ve made basically said that it means he hits into a flyout/popup 40% of his ABs.
by Bilzo on Sep 16, 2009 8:55 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Also…I think it’s ‘cause’.
Looks to me the typical pop up rate is about 7-8%.
Rollins #’s over the past 5 years: Pop up / Line Drive
2009: 11.1% / 18.5%
2008: 6.5% / 20.7%
2007: 9.1% / 19.9%
2006: 7.3% / 19.3%
2005: 8.0% / 21.0%
LD % held steady at about 20% from 2005-2008. PU% 6-9%. This year, LD down PU up.

and as our meme is to pick on Rollins (after a good game last night btw), this was a (proper) replay of a double steal where Rollins brain cramped at third last week.

Catcher threw through, foolishly, without even looking Utley back to third. Chase took off as soon as Nieves released it, and came home w/o a throw

But I did manage to strike out the heart of the order in the 3rd. Hope it wasn’t too late.

He is amazing, huh? I mean, over the course of his career, his arm has been abused to a point that might even make Nolan Ryan cringe. I guess that’s why he’s topping out at 84 mph at this point, but hey — he’s a reasonable approximation for a #5 starter still, which is impressive.

Yahoo sports said
Crawford yelled at PB across clubhouse and then was restrained to a side room
Madden then talked to both and said all was good, haha

If Maddon is responsible for all the ‘greatness’ last year why isn’t he responsible for the major suckitude this year?

9+8=13 GB
I wonder about this dynamic of the championship loser collapsing to a far greater degree than the semifinal loser.
If the Phils can’t win another WS, the next best fate is to lose the NLCS.

Blantron 30, the Automator!
I’m worried about Joey B. He’s beginning and ending this year in a bad way. At least it looks like that now. Hopefully the Nats will let him off the hook (in Dennis Green voice).
If this team had its hitting, starting pitching AND bullpen all “on” at the same time, they’d probably have won the division by now.

again, the lack of walks. Normally after his en fuego streaks, opposition starts to stay away from him and his eye is good enough to lay off and take the BB. Not so much in Sept.

SJPP—re your ticket request from last night. Stay flexible and keep checking StubHub. The site closes about 3 hrs before the event (check the fine print), but I’ve also found some deals about 6-12 hrs before when you get the late cancellation crowd trying to unload at around face value. The 9a-12p time frame prior to a 7.05 start is when you may get lucky.
The Phils are in constant sellout mode now, and now people are guessing trying to pick a clincher, so expect to pay a bit of a premium, esp. on weekends.

Seriously: between their abysmal fundamentals, lousy (for now at least) pitching, and an announcing team that should be banned under the Geneva Convention, can you imagine rooting for them?

By the way…what happened to Durbin???? Is he DL’ed or crap-listed?
by Bilzo on Sep 16, 2009 9:16 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Durbin? Crap-listed.
And that’s kind of unfair to Park. He had a bad outing at Houston, but hadn’t surrendered a run before that since August 8. As a reliever on the year, he’s whiffed 52 while surrendering 42 hits and 16 walks in 49.0 innings — good for a 1.18 WHIP and a 2.57 ERA. In other words… our best relief pitcher.
