Filthy Penny: Giants 4, Phillies 0
Overshadowed during last night's masterpiece was how inept the offense was for most of the night. The ineptitude continued tonight, with the Phillies held scoreless for the first eight innings by Brad Penny, and then shut down in the ninth by Jeremy Affeldt, as the Giants topped the Phillies by a score of 4-0.
For the second straight start, J.A. Happ wasn't awful, but fell victim to the longball and took the loss. Happ surrendered two homers in the sixth inning, to Juan Uribe and former Phillies grit enthusiast Aaron Rowand.
Not much else to say here, except the bats really, really need to get going, please. Jimmy Rollins, for his part, had two hits. But otherwise, blech. The pitchers are starting to hate you guys.

Payback for Lee’s first game with the Phillies?
I believe in Posey.

Lee shutout the Giants in his first start for the Phillies and Penny repaid the favor.

Wouldn’t it more be payback for the game the night before?

Yeah, I think the frustration inherent in losing to a reigning Cy Young Award winner is quite different than getting flummoxed by a minimum salary castoff like Penny.
Regardless, the Phillies bats are poo right now, and Penny deserves tons of credit for exploiting that, even though I hate his face.

Brad Penny, though incredibly fat (like fatter than Joe Blanton fat), is a very good pitcher. And he’s had the Phils’ number for years.

Fixed.
Pick your poison, but look at any advanced metric for Penny over the last two years, and it’s anything but “very good.” FIP: 5.27 (2008), 4.48 (2009). xFIP: 5.12, 4.97. tRA: 6.11, 5.21.
Obviously, the above is me being bitter that we seem to have another Tim Redding on our hands. Sometimes good pitchers get lit up by bad offenses, and other times, mediocre pitchers shut down good teams. I’ll tip my hat to Brad Penny for a well-pitched game tonight, but I refuse to acknowledge that he’s anything but a #4/5 starter at this point in his career.

what’s worse, you don’t have to wonder how Penny sleeps at night, namely, “On top of a pile of money with many beautiful ladies.”

Ugh
Please don’t give me that mental image. Now I’m imagining him extremely fat, naked and on top of money (and Elisha Dushku). Maybe that’s why we haven’t seen her in anything lately? Did he smother her?

Offense not likely to really get going tomorrow
Since they have go up against, you know, Lincecum, who is, you know, much better than Penny.

Blantrums
You ever see Joe Blanton in the dugout after he’s gotten no run support? Its like the Tasmanian Devil. Might as well be an actual statistic right now; I think he’s up to three.

What is that, a sniglet?
Is anyone else on this blog old enough to remember those but me? I loved Rich Hall and NNTN.

NNTN
That show was ahead of its time, although I haven’t watched it in about 20 years, since it originally aired. I wonder if it holds up, or if the humor has become badly dated. I remember there being tons of Reagan humor, which my parents found hysterical. Conan O’Brien was one of their writers, according to Wikipedia (100% reliable info, that).
It was kind of a precursor to The Daily Show and The Onion.

This scares me slightly for the playoffs. I know we have a month to go, but the discussion of Phils vs Giants pitching staffs came up in another thread here, and someone said it didn’t matter if the Giants had a slightly better rotation than ours, since our offense will be able to get it done anyway. Well, these past two games might change someone’s mind. 1 run in 2 games? Come on. We didn’t exactly look that great against them in our last series either.

If the Phillies’ offense stays in this funk, it won’t matter who they face in the playoffs (if they even make it…).

look at it this way...
This Phils scored one run in two games and still won a game. That’s pretty hard to do.

As Casey Stengel said...
… “Good pitching will always stop good hitting and vice-versa.”
The Giants have our number, so it seems. I’d much rather we have a rematch of the 2007 opening round vs. Colorado.
Our batting with RISP has been awful for over a month now. I fear that this could be our undoing.
And seriously, “Don’t talk about… playoffs?!?!” For once, Wheels said something last night that I agreed with: “When your magic number is 1, and you win that night, THEN you go out and celebrate.” (Wheels just reached out there and GOT that one.) In other words, let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

Hey it’s fine for fans to speculate about it as long as the players aren’t looking ahead. But yea I know anything could happen.
