this was classic pitching and poor plate discipline by all three hitters.
All three phils batters (2-3-4) went up trying to pull the ball. All three have been pitched inside off the plate. If any batter had pulled off the pitch they’d have drilled it.

Cole never pitches well in this yard, and rarely against this team.

Given that we seem to be under some weird curse in which Coughlan, Elftard and Paulino all bat around .500 against us, he did fine.

if i recall lidge had the meltdown in 2005, then a bad 2006, then a good 2007

then a trade to the phils in 08

so perhaps we accept that he’s gone after next year

by CoburnsCuddleBuddy on Sep 23, 2009 11:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly, say goodbye for now

Trading him is unfeasable and not realistic.

He needs to be put on the dl right now and we’ll see him again next spring. If it’s his knee or his head that needs to be fixed, so be it. Either way it ain’t happening now. Maybe it could be fixed by next year, but not now.

by JasonB on Sep 23, 2009 11:14 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Exactly.

He’s literally sub-Eaton right now. Unlike Eaton, he’s not a lost cause; I can easily buy that next spring he’ll be effective. But it’s not coming back in the next two weeks, and the cost of Manuel’s failure to recognize that keeps going up.

Over from the minute he toed the rubber.

Charlie, there is no chance he helps this team…just stop it. I am begging you.

by FuquaManuel on Sep 23, 2009 11:04 PM EDT reply actions

Charlie deserved to be ripped. The reporters need to step up and press him about why he continues this nonsense. This is an absolute joke at ths point.

Brad lidge isn’t the problem. It’s cholly.

by JasonB on Sep 23, 2009 11:06 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

The right thing for LIdge to do right now would be to be honest with himself and Charlie and just say he can’t do it — he has a mountain of statistical evidence to back himself up — because Charlie will sure as hell keep doing the bitter end.

by FuquaManuel on Sep 23, 2009 11:06 PM EDT reply actions

The flaw is on Manuel then – and honestly – if he keeps running Lidge out there in the playoffs and he keeps failing – he’s gotta go – it’s like bobby clarke on the flyers or keeping billy king as gm on the sixers – there is a thing as TOO MUCH loyalty

No lidge should just do his job, which is to pitch when he’s asked to. He’s amazingly inept at his job, but he’s doing it.

Cholly simply is not doing his job.

by JasonB on Sep 23, 2009 11:09 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

I agree. But I also think that if Lidge had the best interests of his team at heart, he would tell his coach that he knows he is a detriment to the team and does not think he should not be put in a position to hurt them anymore. It might mean more to Charlie coming from Lidge. I dunno.

Here’s the thing

Anyone who currently thinks he ISNT a dteriment to the team should be smacked and checked for brain death

Dumber move

Sticking with Brad LIdge

Or sticking with Kevin Kolb?

Lidge, and it’s not even close. I don’t even think sticking with Kolb is dumb.

Well I don’t agree that Kolb has upside

i was just curious :)

Lidge. Kolb isn’t permanent.

Well first of all professional sports isn’t like a ‘normal’ job

and secondly – a boss who continues to allow someone to KEEP doing a job while they fail at whatever job that is is an incompetent employer.

In the past week I’ve seen Pete Carrol make the asinine decision NOT to give mitch mustain a chance and I thought that would be the dumbest thing i saw all week

this is a disgrace to our team and Cole who pitched more then well enough to win…this needs to stop or this post season run and chance at a repeat is going to fade faster then the Mets did in June

by Dlance04 on Sep 23, 2009 11:10 PM EDT reply actions

No offense to cole hamels but i couldn’t give a crap if he gets a win or not – it’s irrelevant if HE gets the win – he pitched fine against a mediocre team – whether or not h gets the win is a minor problem

Agreed. I don’t want to sound like a reporter fillled with cliches, but the other guys on the team are getting boned. They deserved to win the game. One pitcher blew it again. Two others helped by giving up runs in 7th and 8th tho.

by Sept.28.Oct.27.Dec.28.2008 on Sep 23, 2009 11:12 PM EDT reply actions

If Lidge converts only a few of the 11 saves he has blown this year, we have already clinched and would not be complaining about Lidge blowing saves right now.

by FuquaManuel on Sep 23, 2009 11:13 PM EDT reply actions

In Orlando FLA. No marlin broadcast here. Listened to game on phone. Anyone able to post Charlies post game comments. Besides that Lidge can’t get three outs ever??

by Pedro45 on Sep 23, 2009 11:18 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

In some ways I was hoping Lidge would blow it again…maybe it will finally convince Manual that he needs to write Lidge off for this year and establish a different closer. Better now than in the playoffs. It’s almost unbelievable that any pitcher, regardless of prior season performance, would still be getting the call after blowing 10 saves, 0-7, 7.24 ERA. Just think of the effect it must be having on team morale. Manual has some tough post-season pitching decisions to make, but jettisoning Lidge isn’t one of them.
