And just in time, too
At this point I have the score 4-1, bottom of third, two on, two out.

Nice job by Blanton to strike out Fielder
and you’re welcome :-)
That ball hit deep! Way back! You can put it on the boooaaaard...YES!
Long drive into deep right center field! This ball is OUTTA HEEERRRREE!

I honestly think the Phillies have a better chance of three-peating as World Champs than Joe Blanton does of ever hitting another home run in his career.

between Howard getting PO’d at 2nd, all the LOB, and the postage stamp strike zone that has materialized in this inning….this looks like another game in which the Phils are destined to phail.
that’s the spirit! (but content-wise, I agree).

34-7 Boids.
so long as we can play the Chiefs every week, McNabb can take his sweet time healing. Kolb looks real good today.
i live in Panthers land, so I rarely get to watch the Iggles unless either they or the Panthers are on a night game. So I was psyched that they were on today. About 5 min into the second half, it was so out of hand they switched to Jets-Titans :(
It’s so out of hand that Jeff Garcia is now playing with 4.40 left in the game.
by Wet Luzinski on Sep 27, 2009 3:40 PM EDT up reply actions
That’s got to be a good thing, right? Quarterback is going to be an interesting situation when McNabb returns.

Bush out, Butler in
bullpen time after Werth K. (who out there called him a poor man’s Adam Dunn? It’s sticking.)
Mets 4, Fla 0. Final
Nats 3, Braves 3 B7
i labelled him that, and have caught flack for it. He’s a better fielder and faster runner, but doesn’t have Dunn’s walks.
batting-wise, I knew what you meant, and certainly his pattern lately FEELS that way. Haven’t dived too deep into the numbers.
by Wet Luzinski on Sep 27, 2009 3:42 PM EDT up reply actions
Dunn vs Werth
PA/HR/K/BB/OPS and then number by % of plate appearance…
Werth: 640 PA / 34 HR (5.1%) 85 BB (13.3%) 149 K (23.2%) Other (59.2%) OPS = .875
Dunn: 641 PA / 38 HR (5.9%) 111 BB (17.3%) 170K ( 26.6%) Other (50.2%) OPS = .946
Don’t know what criteria determine “similar” but to me they certainly look similar. Based on those numbers you’d probably think Dunn was the All-Star, wouldn’t you?

What goes on with the Cincinnati Reds? Haven’t they had an enormous number of excellent players come onto their team, but year after year they send them away and remain unimportant come September.
by phillyinportland on Sep 27, 2009 4:02 PM EDT up reply actions
A small-market struggle, and an uneven farm system from the looks of things. And for the abuse CBP takes, GABP “plays small.” They likely have the same difficulty attracting FAs as the Phils did 6 yrs ago.
by Wet Luzinski on Sep 27, 2009 4:05 PM EDT up reply actions
they have a glut of OFers, which they keep giving away for essentially nothing, and no pitching.
Dunn, Kearns, Encarnacion, Griffey, Josh Hamilton…
That’s what I thought. It’s too bad for the city of Cincinnati, which I know nothing about, but something about the Reds made for a great rivalry with the Philles in a lot of the earlier pennant races, like 1964, the 1976 playoffs, and even in 1980-81, where the Reds were close to making the playoffs.

True, in this ab, I don’t worry so much. It’s the pitcher, and Blanton tends to hit to the left side. The Brewers playing in made that a bit more exciting that it would have been normally, and a miscue would have gotten the run home, maybe 2.
In general, it’s the pattern we’ve been seeing lately—too aggressive, hitting what the pitcher wants.
by Wet Luzinski on Sep 27, 2009 4:01 PM EDT up reply actions
that’s not really what I’m getting at. It’s just that in that situation, a lazy grounder anywhere else (usually) scores the run. Phils have a knack for hitting them right to the guy standing by the runner at 3rd, preventing him from running.
I get it, and I agree. My main point is that the batters can’t seem to lay off the pitches that result in those grounders.
Also, Blanton again not an ideal candidate, but it feels like we have not attempted safety or suicide squeezes as often this year.

so much for that prediction. Amazing.

by phillyinportland on Sep 27, 2009 4:00 PM EDT reply actions
assuming his day is done...
that was a great outing by Blanton given the circumstances. He was squeezed a lot today, and gave up some hits, but only one run.
oh, I think Chollie has to leave him in. This game still feels young.
by Wet Luzinski on Sep 27, 2009 4:02 PM EDT up reply actions
True. If what I’m seeing is right: 5 IP, 95 pitches, and considering the importance of this game and Manuel’s desire to get extra work out of his starters, Blanton should go at least one more inning.

Just got in and pleased to see 6-1 lead. I also see that we have been in LOB Purgatory yet again. How bad was it?
which ALWAYS bothers me when we have a lead.

Does this reliever have an ERA above or below 9.00?
Not that it will mean much to the next two batters.

Chris Smith
Never heard of him but looks like he’s done okay for the Brewers this year. ERA in the low 3’s. Of course, he got the two batters out.

Haha, they went to commercial break and I figured the Phillies stranded the bases loaded again, I just realize now that it was a pitching change.
I’m sorry I ever admired Ryan Zimmerman.

ok, who has “Paul Bako slam” on their baseball bingo card? Well, you can leave that square open for now.
they still print those?
Every year I enter, but just once, the Daily News HR Payoff Inning contest. Haven’t been pulled yet, but I just know I’ll have a bases-loaded, Paul Bako-ish situation.

This is all about how a fucking horrible bullpen can drive an otherwise good manager straight out of his right mind.
Sixth-inning bugaboo
In past years Manuel used to really get hung up on getting starters through six innings. Maybe he liked that quality start statistic, if the starter had a shot at it. (I can remember games with Freddy Garcia and Adam Eaton being left in to start the sixth inning when they were clearly about to get bombed.) Can’t imagine he thought going beyond 110 pitches with Blanton at this time of the season was a smart thing – but he did it.

Today's game started at 2:05..
I agreed to take the wife to work today, and pick her up at 6PM when she was done, so we could go grab a quick bite to eat. I assumed 4 hours was enough time that the game would be over. Apparently, I was wrong.

seriously….the brewers have nothing to play for, yet they do the small things and are successful (like stealing 2nd with 2 outs).
The Phils get picked off bases, leave runners on and can’t win a game to save their ass.
That, plus being unable to close out one-run games in the ninth inning, pretty well sums it up.

Has it really turned around that completely? I’m not watching, but 30 minutes ago they were doing okay, up 6-1 and looking to at least cut the magic number by one.
by phillyinportland on Sep 27, 2009 4:49 PM EDT up reply actions
those were my “tired” cliches. I see guys making some questionable decisions, but really the most major boneheaded play was Howard getting picked off at 2B a real long long time ago.
by Wet Luzinski on Sep 27, 2009 4:51 PM EDT up reply actions
look
The Phils just have to play good, hard-nosed baseball and let the results take care of themselves. They can’t get caught scoreboard-watching; as for the Braves game, it is what it is. Now, what were you saying?

I’m fine with Charlie leaving him in the leadoff spot for this year — creatures of habit, sports psychology and all that — but he needs to hit in the 6-hole next year. His skillset just doesn’t fit at the top of the lineup.

for those of you keeping track at home….it’s very likely that Braun and Fielder will bat in the 9th…..
actually I’m still waiting to be able to mark Stormy Weathers off on Phillies Bingo. I wonder if we’d have a row at that point.

to be fair
Weathers doesn’t have great career numbers against the Phils: 4.73 ERA, more BB than K.
Feels like the sort of schlub who torments us during times of epic awfulness, though.
Maybe it will work better for Madson mentally to be out there in the 8th – and hopefully in the ninth he’ll just think it’s his normal place.

Ok Folks.....lets start the Blown Save Lottery.
Will Madson give up the gopher to:
Braun?
Fielder?
Cameron?
I’ll take Fielder, with a 3 run homer, this inning.
I take my bit players, Rivera, Counsell or Gamel, as the ones who will cut our hearts out. Gut says Rivera.

ok ok ok .....just going murphy's law here.
Vic gets on, Utley does too, Howard fans to end inning with bases loaded.
Madson gives up tying run, then we get to bat in the 10th with werth, feliz, etc….
bad umpiring is corrosive
It degrades hitters’ selectivity. Consequentially, they swing at shit, do nothing with it, and are retired.
don’t. consider this practice for the postseason.

Meaning they’re eliminated from division contention. Let’s go hoping they play the spoiler against the Braves and take them out before they decide to screw us over.
Five up with seven to play is a pretty good place to be.
