DEEP HURTING: Astros 8, Phillies 2

Another rookie pitcher with a 6.00+ ERA dominates the Phillies, another bang up job by the bullpen to make a closer game a laugher, another Braves victory, and the Magic Number remains at 3.

Astros' rookie Yorman Bazardo held the Phillies to just two hits and two runs (one on a balk) over 5 2/3 innings pitched, with the Phillies hitting bolts right at the Houston fielders, while Cole Hamels for the Phillies fell victim to bloops and broken bat dribblers, and was on the hook for six of the Astros eight runs over 6 2/3 innings, the last two of which were allowed to score when Tyler Walker failed to get an out in the seventh inning.  The Astros scored five runs in the seventh inning -- all with two outs.

The Astros bullpen did their job, pitching 3 1/3 scoreless innings and surviving a little "scare" in the ninth but escaping after Greg Dobbs grounded into a double play to end the game.

The Phillies 3-7 hitters (Utley, Howard, Werth, Ibanez, Feliz) went 1-for-15 with three walks, which tells you about all you need to know about the offense tonight.

God this is painful to watch.

I only long for a day when Bazardo is matched up against Bastardo.

Tomorrow...

Aren’t the Astros sending out someone who has never pitched in the majors tomorrow?

At the rate things are going, dude is going to throw a perfect game.

If the Marlins roll over for the Braves, it’s going to make me absolutely sick. They played that last series against the Phils like it was the World Series, and they’re going to do the same thing again this weekend.

That being said, the Phillies can just end this by taking advantage of the huge starting pitching disparity for the last three games of this series (Lopez/Moehler/Paulino ERA of 5.82; Happ/Lee/Martinez ERA of 3.00). If only it were that easy, right?

yea, the Marlins are annoying like that

"[The Giants] beat us down. We were beat by a grown-man team, a team we want to be like one day. They came in here and took it to us. Out-manned us, out-gunned us. ... It wasn't even close." - Raheem Morris, 9/27/09

I listened to one inning of this game tonight on the way home from break-the-fast dinner. It was the 7th.

Not sure what the answer is. LA suggested, I think seriously, starting all reserves tomorrow: Hoover/Tracy/Cairo/Dobbs/Bruntlett/Mayberry/Francisco/Stairs. I might do it, both to give the utterly exhausted regulars a rest and to neutralize the major league debut effect by running out what’s basically a minor league lineup.

Why the hell not?

Maybe they’ve seen this guy in the minors and know what to look for. It can’t hurt, seeing as how our regulars scored 2 runs on a sac fly and a balk tonight. Not everybody hits. Whaaa-hooo.

Charlie’s loyalty is hurting us again, though. Why not use guys other than Walker or Condrey out of the ’pen? Those two have been lousy of late. How about Romero, Eyre, Taschner, Escalona, Mick Billmeyer…

this is utterly painful to watch..we just look horrible..that whole starting all the back ups should honestly be considered or if Happ pitches a masterpiece and we can score more then 2 runs…take them out!!! I dont know how many of you are hockey fans here but we look like the Flyers here last year…taking it for granted and limping into the playoffs….im not trying to have a short run….

Good comparison.

Yesterday’s loss to the Astros reminded me of the Flyers’ early April loss to Toronto, after which Homer tore the team a new one and they woke up. Step up, Ruben.

Much like the Flyers experienced last year, the bad habits the Phils have been exhibiting of late are not going to magically disappear in the playoffs. It’s not bloody likely, anyway.

Baseball Tonight

I watched the entire hour of Baseball Tonight waiting for some mention of the Phillies’ struggles and heard absolutely nothing. Lots on the Braves being the hottest team in baseball but it was all about them catching the Rockies, not the Phillies. The only one who even mentioned catching the Phillies was Jair Jurrjens, who said something about wanting the Rockies and the Phillies to lose to give them a chance. Maybe they don’t want to jinx a potentially big story by talking about “another Phillies collapse” unless the story is unavoidable. Or else they can’t imagine anyone can blow a four-game lead with six games to go.
