It Can't Happen Here!: Astros at Phillies Game Thread, September 29, 2009

Houston Astros at Philadelphia Phillies, Sep 29, 2009 7:05 PM EDT

The Phillies look with increasing urgency at the quickly gaining Atlanta Braves, hoping they can simply run out the clock, much less get hot, before they're overtaken.

Tonight, J.A. Happ can underline his case for Rookie of the Year with a strong performance against the Houston Astros.  He'll be opposed by the anonymous-scrub-who-will-probably-dominate named Freddy Pitchendorf or some crap.

Discuss the game below.

I am glad I wasn’t on this thread last night….had a meeting and listened to the meltdown on the radio driving home. That being said.

LET’S GO PHILS!!!

Oh man, with a sinclair lewis reference in the title, we can’t lose tonight!

by FuquaManuel on Sep 29, 2009 7:04 PM EDT reply actions

I’m struggling between my desire to see Happ get these guys out, and my desire that he throw at them all.

by dajafi on Sep 29, 2009 7:11 PM EDT reply actions

Tejada should get one in the ribs before this series concludes. Berkman too. And Lee.

by FuquaManuel on Sep 29, 2009 7:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Ahhh, if only Ed Wade could set foot in the batter’s box.

by PhillyFriar on Sep 29, 2009 7:13 PM EDT up reply actions

This Houston pitcher has a sub-Lidge WHIP.

Not that this has much relevance. Just sayin.

by dajafi on Sep 29, 2009 7:15 PM EDT reply actions

He is named after the great town of Wilton, Connecticut. Home to a bunch of rich white people.

by FuquaManuel on Sep 29, 2009 7:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Think I dated a girl from Wilton.

She was cuh-razy.

by dajafi on Sep 29, 2009 7:18 PM EDT up reply actions

I have family there. They are afraid of me.

by FuquaManuel on Sep 29, 2009 7:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh god, it’s happening already.

Jesus, three roll-overs.

We’re totally fucked.

Happ having difficulty throwing strikes.

by FuquaManuel on Sep 29, 2009 7:24 PM EDT reply actions

It’s pretty clear at this point that Lopez is going to stay way, way away from everyone, and try to get them to get impatient and roll over his sinker. Look at the pitch chart to Rollins…

Photobucket

And yes, those first two pitches are balls. So sweet… we’ve got an awesome strike zone tonight too.

by PhillyFriar on Sep 29, 2009 7:24 PM EDT reply actions

Jesus, fat ass Carlos Lee steals a base??

by WanderingMoses on Sep 29, 2009 7:25 PM EDT reply actions

Jesus Christ, and the parade of bleeders and infield singles continues.

by PhillyFriar on Sep 29, 2009 7:25 PM EDT reply actions

Good. Maybe this thing will be over after 2 innings so I don’t have to waste my time.

by FuquaManuel on Sep 29, 2009 7:26 PM EDT reply actions

2 wins and Florida wins one game against the Braves, how hard could it be?

by Whack8888 on Sep 29, 2009 7:29 PM EDT reply actions

It’s probably unhealthy how much I detest this Astros team.

by dajafi on Sep 29, 2009 7:29 PM EDT reply actions

He’s really missing tonight.

by FuquaManuel on Sep 29, 2009 7:29 PM EDT reply actions

Towles is hitting .108 do you really need to walk him?

by Whack8888 on Sep 29, 2009 7:31 PM EDT reply actions

Risk/reward thing. With runners at 2nd and 3rd, even a bloop base hit scores 2. Even though you turn the lineup over, it’s worth it to get to face a pitcher fresh up from Double-A.

by PhillyFriar on Sep 29, 2009 7:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah it makes sense, I was just nit picking a bit

by Whack8888 on Sep 29, 2009 7:34 PM EDT up reply actions

I hear you. You just know that, with our luck, Towles would have hit a blooper over Utley’s head to plate a pair. God I hate this Astros team.

by PhillyFriar on Sep 29, 2009 7:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Ok, out of that one….how many times will fire be played with tonight?

Blame the fans for the players sucking….novel.

by FuquaManuel on Sep 29, 2009 7:35 PM EDT up reply actions

The crucial thing is for the bats to remain patient. Make Lopez throw strikes, and he’ll start to elevate his sinker.

Or you could just strike out on 3 pitches, Ryan Howard.

by PhillyFriar on Sep 29, 2009 7:36 PM EDT reply actions

This is just bad. Bad bad bad.

by FuquaManuel on Sep 29, 2009 7:38 PM EDT reply actions

Damn this pitcher is good. Maybe he’ll throw a perfect game.

by besam32 on Sep 29, 2009 7:38 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

It’s bothering me that they’re having shit ABs. Confidence is such a big deal for pitchers like this guy, and they’re giving it to him.

Also not helping: this ump calling every first pitch a strike, whereever it is.

Okay, Werth. Perfect game over ;)

by dajafi on Sep 29, 2009 7:39 PM EDT reply actions

Mr. Positive

that’s me tonight.

So far it is a beautiful early fall night night and we are making outs at record pace. So there’s something to look forward to.

And Werth begins what will start a 6-week skein of ridiculously good luck.

by Wet Luzinski on Sep 29, 2009 7:39 PM EDT reply actions

More positive thoughts: there are 2 outs, so Feliz couldn’t ground into a double play!

by PhillyFriar on Sep 29, 2009 7:40 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m not too excited yet….he still pounded that pitch right into the ground.

by WanderingMoses on Sep 29, 2009 7:39 PM EDT reply actions

Chase Utley (anecdotally) seems to be a slow finisher. The opposite of Howard.

Bench isn’t that bad. Francisco, Stairs and even Mayberry are all major league quality OFs. Rest Werth, at least, against a righty.

Our fourth inning

is statistically our best. My hunch is we swing the bats at our awakest.

by Wet Luzinski on Sep 29, 2009 8:12 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah I have noticed this non statistically, it seems like recently they are just awful the first time of the line up and then when they go through the second time they can get a pretty good rally or something going

Good stats from Franske. Only player over the last 60 years with more RBI over a 4 year stretch is Sosa.

Seven! Seven

by Wet Luzinski on Sep 29, 2009 8:52 PM EDT reply actions

And that is why Werth needs to hit before Ibanez come playoff time. If you bring in a lefty specialist to pitch to Chase and Howard, you need to either leave him in to pitch to a lefty-masher, or take your chances with Ibanez against a righty.

Along the same lines, the starting pitching was pretty horrible at the beginning of the year, and the bull pen got used a lot. I think the Phils are just experiencing the negative effects of that at this stage, with injuries and guys just not pitching up to their level etc. It is easy to get down on a bull pen at the end of the year, because there mistakes are so obvious, but it also isnt really fair to say “Player X sucks, he is giving up tons of runs in September” when he got used a ton early in the year and did pretty well until he got fatigued from overuse.

I agree, I am guessing it is because the pitching spot is up third in the next inning, but with a 5 run lead is that the most important thing? Aside from this year, I cant imagine all these high pitch count games are going to be good for Happ next year

They were talking about it in the playoffs. Next to 100% hamels, Madson has the 2nd best changeup on the team and it’s pretty damn good.

He’s talked about not getting beat with his second best pitch when he pitches in close and late situations; he’s hung some change ups and paid for it. I still think it’d be good to mix a couple in, but if the fastball’s hitting 97 and you can get it away with it, I won’t argue too strenuously.

jem, ANY time at plate is a plate appearance provided there’s an “outcome” of some kind (i.e., doesn’t count if runner gets picked off mid-appearance).

Sac bunts, sac flies, fielders choices, are all plate appearances but not at-bats.
