Magic Man: Astros at Phillies Game Thread, September 30, 2009

Houston Astros at Philadelphia Phillies, Sep 30, 2009 7:05 PM EDT

One more win -- ANY win -- and the Phillies claim their third consecutive NL East crown, and begin their World Championship title defense in earnest.

The improbable man of the hour is Pedro Martinez, ace mercenary and baseball legend.

It has to happen tonight, doesn't it?

Brian Moehler goes for the Astros.

Discuss the game below.

It’s amazing what a difference two years make. I was at the game when the Phillies clinched the division in 2007. I, along with the rest of the city, went absolutely apeshit. Now we expect to win the division, and it will take at least another trip to the World Series to get me that excited again.

And amazing what a difference a day makes. One Phillies win and one Braves loss later, and everyone’s in a great mood again.

Funny how that works. People really don’t grasp probability.

Philly is generally a snake-bit town. The idea of supplanting the Mets as the most recent debacle of how to finish off a season is a true punch in the gut.

But I wonder if we shouldn’t be rooting for the Mets right now. It could hurt their draft position a little bit if they do well right now. Washington’s gonna get the #1 no matter what.

I had a vague recollection that we’d destroyed Brian Moehler in a really crucial game during one of the last two Septembers. But I guess it was actually in 2006 and it was in two games. Unfortunately, we stlil weren’t able to catch up and get into the playoffs that year, of course.

We definitely should root for Atlanta now. I don’t think they’re going to catch Colorado no matter what, but if they make it close, the Rockies won’t be able to set their rotation as easily.

by taco pal on Sep 30, 2009 7:54 PM EDT reply actions

You’re probably right, but with the Braves playing the Nats to close out the season, I’ll admit to still being terrified of a miracle Wild Card comeback and its ramifications, i.e. that we get the Cardinals in the first round.

by PhillyFriar on Sep 30, 2009 7:56 PM EDT up reply actions

You know, after taking a look at some R/L splits and head-to-head matchups recently, I think the team I’m most worried about is the Dodgers, not the Cards.

Yeah I heard L.A. state that opinion about Wedge too. It’s not a very sensible opinion, seeing as how the Indians sucked before the Lee trade too. They weren’t particularly good before the Sabathia trade last year either. Doesn’t mean it’s Wedge’s fault, but he can’t blame the trades.

He’s throwing that change for strikes seemingly at will. Would be nice if it were a bit slower—it’s only 5-6 miles off the fastball—but it’s a hell of a lot better than the nothing he had before the demotion.

by dajafi on Sep 30, 2009 9:06 PM EDT reply actions

I think he had anti-nothing. His other pitch was called a ‘bat magnet’.

by Bilzo on Sep 30, 2009 9:07 PM EDT up reply actions

upon reflection, Kendrick is the perfect antidote to break the Astros’ eerie Replacement Level spell over us.

by Wet Luzinski on Sep 30, 2009 9:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Check out his pitch values on Fangraphs. Small sample size for this year, but the difference is astounding.

2008 Change: -3.42 R/100
2009 Change: 2.99 R/100

He’s also throwing it almost 18% of the time, instead of 4% like last year. That’s huge.

by PhillyFriar on Sep 30, 2009 9:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Ruiz is playing... should he be?

After tonight Paul Hoover should see most of the action the rest of the week, no? I assume we want Ruiz’s wrist as rested as possible.

"I am the Walrus?..... I am the Walrus." - Donny Kerabatsos

by The Navigator on Sep 30, 2009 9:07 PM EDT reply actions

Bako and Hoover, yeah. I wanted Ruiz to see enough action that his timing would be okay for the playoffs, but he—like all the other regulars, and maybe more so—should get a lot of rest over the last four games assuming we TCOB tonight.

by dajafi on Sep 30, 2009 9:12 PM EDT up reply actions

There has to be a happy medium between resting his wrist, and giving him some at bats against live pitching to get him back up to speed for next week.

by PhillyFriar on Sep 30, 2009 9:13 PM EDT up reply actions

fair enough

But does it make sense for him to play 1B? AFAIK he has no experience there so I guess the answer is no, unless you think any major leaguer can pick up first in a snap.
