Phils Future Ibanez/Taylor/Brown

I'm a Dbacks fan that has been rooting for you guys since 1993 and will be as well this year since the Dbacks are done.

Just a question for the board: Ibanez has taken a nose dive and you have two elite OF prospects on the cusp of the Bigs in Mike Taylor and Domonic Brown. What do you guys see happening next year? Taylor is in AAA and appears ready, Brown maybe a year behind him. How long does Ibanez have left on his contract? Does Brown get a chance to start next year or is too much money tied to Ibanez? What about in the future? Obviously Victorino isn't going anywhere and Werth is unlikely as well.

Yeah...

…I keep telling myself this is a good problem to have, but at the same time something’s gotta give. A few people from the other thread seemed to think trading Ibanez made the most sense. In the great scheme of things it makes little sense, but compared to the other options might be more reasonable…? I don’t know.

victorino should be traded in the offseason to open aspot for taylor .. hehasmore value than ibanez ..because ibanez is old and declining

That only happened because Thome got hurt and Howard proved he could hit in the majors in his absence. Howard was a known commodity when Thome was traded. Same thing with Chase and Polanco.

5 tool players don’t always pan out. There are countless examples of players who tear up AAA and can’t hit anything in the majors. Victorino had a 106 OPS+ last season and 111+ this season. He provides a lot of speed and very good defense. He is more than just an above average player. He’s a borderline All-Star. You don’t trade away players like that to make room for a player who hasn’t proved he can hit Major League hitting yet.

Howard wasn't unknown. The year they got Thome he was killing it in minors.

Then he had to wait in minors while Jimmy T put up big numbers here until he got hurt.

They signed Thome in November 2002, when Ryan Howard was coming off a .280/.367/.460 season in low-A Lakewood, with 19 homers and 145 strikeouts in 570 plate appearances. They would have been fools to pass on Jim Thome because of those numbers from Howard.

True, I believe it was Ryan second pro year. Part of what I meant is, he was putting big numbers the same time

Jimmy T was and since T was signed and not hurt until a few years later Ryan had to sit. And very glad we didn’t trade him, as I remember we had several offers over the last two years in the minors.

Ibanez isn’t going anywhere either. He is exactly who we though he was when he signed: a player with amazing hot streaks and frustrating cold streaks. He’ll start hitting the ball again.

The Phillies have always been known to bring players along slowly. Taylor will almost certainly start next season in AAA and would only likely be called up before September if there’s an injury. Brown will likely start in AA and be tried at AAA later in the season if he continues his success. The organization likely doesn’t even see him as an option for the big league club next season unless really bad things happen in the big club.

As for contract situations, Ibanez is signed through 2011, Werth is signed through 2010, and Victorino still has two more seasons of arbitration. The logical move is to sit back and wait and see what happens. The best case scenario is that all 5 OFs mentioned continue to be productive, Taylor replaces Werth when his contract runs out, then Brown replaces Ibanez when his is done.

the other thing that probaly halts an ibanez trade is the amount of his contract…doubt any team wants to take that on unless he was still hitting .340…dont know much if anything about phils prospects r taylor or brown possible leadoff canidates or 3-4-5 type guys?

Both guys project as middle-of-the-order hitters.

Anthony Gose may be the most likely leadoff prospect in the system, though he’s nowhere near ML-ready (spent the year in low-A and didn’t hit well at all).

This is a common fallacy. Ibanez is not making that much. He is probably somewhat overpaid but he is far from untradeable. The contract would depress our return on the trade to a degree, but that is not a reason not to trade him if that depressed return correlates accurately with his value to the Phillies, which it does.
