Lee still seems to be reaching for some kind of rhythm. Their 8-9 hitters got really good wood on him.

Nice pitches to get their big guys last inning. Maybe that will put him right.
FWIW, I’ve got the game on mute—I refuse to listen to the MASNholes—and am waiting for the president’s speech to start, because I’m lame like that.

Injured pitchers
Any word on Happ or Romero or Eyre today? I’m expecting Romero to be done for the year. Honestly think that would mean Happ(assuming he’s healthy enough) would go back to pen with Moyer starting again. Kendrick will then take over Moyers spot starts. Any thoughts.

just a poll:
Cliff Lee’s last 3 starts
regression to the mean

unknown?
by CoburnsCuddleBuddy on Sep 9, 2009 8:51 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
my vote is nr 1
but his mean is not all that bad
by SmilingJPhilsPhan on Sep 9, 2009 8:53 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don’t know—he has had a very bad season in the past—season before last where he was sent to the minors. I should think it’s more regression to the mean and he’ll be somewhere in between what he was his first 5 starts and these last 3.
by doubleh on Sep 9, 2009 8:55 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don’t get ‘regression to the mean’ – he was excellent last year and very good this year (run support not withstanding for those who think W-L is how you judge a pitcher) in cleveland.

I just dont understand how he can post a .68 ERA against the first five teams he faces and then turn in said outings against Houston and Atlanta, and then a mediocre outing against Washington. If you could explain, I’d be curious to hear it

Yes I have :)
And whie i have all the available data before me (except for tonights game cause it ain’t available yet) I suck at analysis – i can present data like a mofo but can’t tell you what’s significant and what’s not – so if someone has an idea on what could be causing this – i present them with said numbers

In fact I’m having a craptastic week (last 7 days) in terms of work and yelling at my boss (it’s hard to explain but getting fired would be difficult) wondering about my future trying to learn python without programming in the last week and figuring out how to run perl mysql and dbd:dbi on a mac with absolutely no unix knowledge outside the basices :)
And my sleep sucks :)
Seriously though – if you have a hypothesis about Lee – i’d be happy to curnch some numbers for you

by CoburnsCuddleBuddy on Sep 9, 2009 9:09 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Can’t blame pitch selection all on Lee. Catcher calls it but Lee could shake him off.
Bako called Atlanta. Ruiz called Houston.
by doubleh on Sep 9, 2009 9:09 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
but regardless of who calls it, the pitch ‘make up’ could be a facotr
For instance – in the first game against the giants he threw 13 2 seam fast balls – 2 for balls, 11 for strikes (actualy strikes, not in play strikes)

One thing I am tired of hearing is that the league has “figured him out”. They say the same thing about Hamels now. That’s one of those oft repeated phrases which I think has merit for Kendrick types, but not so much for pitchers of Lee and Hamels’ abilities.
by doubleh on Sep 9, 2009 9:14 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Ok – keep in mind i’m relatively new looking at this data but that might be something i could put together – i do have a ‘primary’ obligation with this stuff – an ‘internship’ that led to all that figuring out creation – but i’ll try and fix some time in.

Lee’s been okay tonight. Some real good pitches, some worse ones.
The problem is that the bullpen is really, really short tonight: Walker, Durbin, Escalona, maybe Lidge (which is a bad thing anyway), maybe Madson.

I don’t know if there’s a way to discern that from statistical data without looking at actual video. Catcher calls for a ball low and inside and Lee throws it right down the middle.
Does PitchFX show when a pitcher misses his spots that the catcher calls for? I’m no stats guru so I honestly don’t know.
by doubleh on Sep 9, 2009 9:09 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don’t know if it shows that but it’s got a lot of x y z variables that i don’t understand yet – so ‘hot zones’ could be run if i knew how to look at the variables :)

If only i were still in college – this would be easier :)
Unfrotunately – while good at numbers – i SUCK at analysis I can come up with things to lok at – but determining what if anything they might or might not mean is for the smarter guys at this blog

not enough sliders – too many 4 seam fast balls (looking at the amazing giants game on the 31st)
39% 4 seam fast balls
31% Sliders
I didn’t run the math quickly on the rest atlant houston game – but i’m betting that percentage isn’t the same

I was surprised that Zimmerman ran, and disgusted at the throw.

A propos of nothing, Ibanez reminds me of
Willie McGee for some reason. They both sort of have that E.T. look about them. Could be that their arms are similarly weak as well. E.T. was never right after the guys in suits showed up at the house.

Why did they take Gonzalez out?
Dude was having a hell of a game. Seemed like exactly the guy you would want at the plate right then

This is the guy that over managed his bullpen last night/ I think he’s in the ‘every body plays’ mode

Really has left me scratching my head with some of his pitching staff management decisions lately.
by FuquaManuel on Sep 9, 2009 9:51 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
He really never has had a real feel for when a pitcher is done, but last year he could get away with it because the BP was so solid. This year, he can’t do the BP by the numbers because of the 9th inning issue.

the nats use the howard shift on Utley as well as howard. Vic had the standard lead, but the SS was essentially covering second base, and the ball was hit right at him (up the middle) there. Vic was in no-man’s land.
Bad luck pretty much.

I see a different Madson on the mound the last 2 nights. Confident, strong pitches to his spot. No panick seen from him when the first hit. He has a confidence that is awesome. I commend him for the fantastic pitching the last 2 nights. Awesome. Maddog is unleashed!
