Tom Verducci has a playful little metric for shorthanding the "efficiency" of baseball teams over the last decade. Not hard substantively, but perhaps a springboard to discussion of efficiency in buying wins. The Phillies were ranked 6th in MLB. The usual suspects were ahead of them - Marlins, Twins, A's, etc. It's thought-provoking, if not big on hard numbers (and Verducci says as much - he makes no great claims for the methodology used - just for fun).
