Phils sign Jose Contreras to a 1 year deal

Contreras, 38 years old  was 5-13 last year with a 5.42 ERA last year with the Chicago White Sox. He was the traded to the Colorado Rockies. After traded to the Rockies, he posted a 1-0 record with a 1.59 ERA including 2 starts. The Cubs and the Cardinals were interested in him before him signing with the Phils.

The deal is pending a physical.

I think this is a good signing, it shores up our relief pitching staff

Is expected to be a starter or, like Chan Ho Park, will he be in the bullpen?

by Mitchell Green on Jan 22, 2010 3:33 PM EST reply actions

I bumped this to the front page. Thanks eagleswin.

I voted “yes,” btw, but probably should make clear that I love it if he’s a reliever and dislike it if he’s a starter.

My guess is that he got the spiel Park got in December 2008: we’ll let you compete for #5, but no promises.

Ditto here as well. I would have voted “meh”, if it was an option.

by Cormican on Jan 22, 2010 4:06 PM EST up reply actions

Resounding “meh” from this gal, except that’s probably a contradiction in terms.

That 1.647 WHIP over those 17 IP with COL, to say nothing of his career 1.347, don’t bode well for my late inning blood pressure. I hope he can strike out a lot of guys with the bases loaded.

BUT A 1.59 ERA…ONE…POINT…FIVE…NINE

by jemagee on Jan 22, 2010 4:26 PM EST up reply actions

And switching from that murderous AL Central division… that’ll only help!

hoo boy.

Hitters Park

At least it won’t be must different from US Cellular pitching here and Denver’s no pinic. Still didn’t we have bad luck with another White Sox pitcher? Neither Garica nor Contreas fared well after the White Sox ’05 season. Vazquez also if I recall though he recovered nicely as his current gig attest to. Aging pitchers and older back-up catchers…this is becoming a fetish.

old timers like me say: Joe Cowley says “hi! I still suck!”

PTSD

Why did you have to mention Joe Cowley? Ugh.

You have to give what you fear a name before you can deal with it.

I’ll take it, put him in the bullpen or let him start the season like Chan Ho did last year and move him. Nice job Amaro.

Why do I feel like my team is shopping at Habor Freight to buy tools…

hah, well some arms are needed.

I suppose they will put him in the ‘pen right? If that’s the case,I like the signing.

The Right-hander checks the runner here's the pitch.Swing and a drive right-center field. This one is falling it's a base hit! It'll go up the alley. Bruntlett will score,Ruiz around 3rd he's being waved home. The Phillies have won the ball game,Rollins has won it! They stream out of the dugout. This game is over as the Phillies strike again with 2 outs in the 9th inning!"

I voted yes, but I agree that I like it more as a reliever and that is contingent on it not being for a TON of money…granted, it’s just a 1-year deal, so not a huge deal.

I honestly don’t even mind bringing him in with the idea of competing for the 5th spot in the rotation. I’m still not entirely sold on Kendrick, and Moyer’s a big question mark even if he gets healthy. Contreras is no great shakes, and seems to lose his head with men on base, but his sinker/slider mix is still decent, and I remember it looking pretty good for Colorado in last year’s NLDS. And for what it’s worth, Joe Sheehan thinks he’s a good value purchase…

Contreras has been better than his ERAs for two years running, and was victimized by an awful strand rate last season. He still has velocity and two good secondary pitches; the bigger concern is whether his aging body can take a full season’s worth of work. Signing him with a realistic expectation of 24 starts could produce a gain of a couple wins, a pretty good pickup in the back end of a rotation.

And if he winds up settling in as long man/middle reliever, then all the better. Decent little pick-up here for Amaro.

Seems like a move just to make a move to me.

Hes old and stunk it up last year… I dont see the point.

We now have two Cubans on the roster. Might be an all-time Phillies roster. Just sayin.

by taco pal on Jan 22, 2010 7:31 PM EST reply actions

Three if you count Raul.

by FuquaManuel on Jan 22, 2010 7:45 PM EST up reply actions

True, this is uncharacteristically Latino for the Phillies.

by Wet Luzinski on Jan 22, 2010 7:54 PM EST up reply actions

As relief yes

As a starter… HELL NO!!!

He would make a good addition to our pen, but a starter he is not.

How much?

That is the million dollar big question.

Low risk. Maybe catch lightning in a bottle. Even just to have someone to clean up blowouts (either way).

I’m more amazed that there are more than 400 people who would care enough to point and click on a vote about Contreras.

by Wet Luzinski on Jan 26, 2010 11:17 PM EST up reply actions

Signing an older pitcher is something I don’t necessarily like but when you don’t know their real age…what’s the upside that’s he’s older? If you buy a used car and there’s broken glass by the dashboard and a big grease smudge near the odometer then you just puirchased a car from PT Barnum.
