Cliff Lee, Phillies Reach Agreement on Five Year, $100 million-plus contract. I'm freaking out. Can't breathe. Send help.
UPDATE: Deal believed to be worth in the neighborhood of five years, $100 million. Really. Yankees offer estimated to be 6-7 years, total value $150 million. Really really.
UPDATE UPDATE: Todd Zolecki reporting deal around five years, $120 million.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE: Jerry Crasnick reporting that Amaro is hard at work on a deal to ship Joe Blanton elsewhere, presumably in a salary dump.
Holy moley. T.R. Sullivan, the Texas Rangers beat writer for MLB.com, reports that the Rangers have been told that free agent pitcher Cliff Lee will be signing with the Phillies.
He's back, and he's ours.
The projected Phillies front four of Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee, Roy Oswalt, and Cole Hamels had four of the top 12 SIERAs in MLB in 2010. Lee's 10.28 SO/BB ratio was the best in baseball since Bret Saberhagen's 11.00 mark in 1994, and was the second best in modern baseball history.
This is obviously an incredible turn of events, and I don't really have much to tell you about Cliff Lee that you don't already know. Absolutely crazy.

How awesome is Cliff Lee? He’s going to be beloved in this town. After the domination of the Yankees last year, and now to snub them, and probably more money (in the long run), to come here! WOW.

Don’t know if I posted this here, but back when the trades happened when my friends asked me what I thought, I said that I had a feeling Amaro and Lee hatched a secret plan where Amaro said he needed to reboost the farm system but wanted him long term, so Lee pretended to be pissed off at the trade and they planned on him resigning after this year. I did not expect it to be true haha…

As a Nats fan, I have to say this kind of confirms what the positive elements of the Philly fanbase have to say. If you’re great in Philly, you are historically beloved. If Cliff Lee is part of a World Series team any time during his tenure in Philly, he will be loved as much as any player in baseball history. Sounds like he had more fun there than anywhere else, I guess.
I’m fine with celebrating how he jilted the Yankees. That’s a wonderful thing because they are now they are lost in the wilderness. But why did he choose Philly over the Rangers? I’ve got to believe that he had a better deal from the Rangers. It seems that the fans there were great to him and it seemed like that was a good fit.
Phillies definitely have a better chance to win the World Series and it’s got to be fun to not have the weight of the world on you all the time while sharing the “ace” burden with equivalent talents.
I will continue to loathe most of the Philly fans I encounter in Nats Park, but I have respect that your organization was able to get this done. Today, you folks have earned your celebration and I hope that y’all stay classy elsewhere.
DC is a cursed land. We get broken McNabb, cashing in Werth and to top it off a 6 game Capitals losing streak heading into the Winter Classic and a daily expose of all the reasons why the Penguins are going to beat us.
Help us Bryce Harper, you’re our only hope.

No, we’re not. Bud Selig is going to put a 5th wild team to tease teams just like us into having a bit more hope. People on this site know how the dollars will work out better than we do. But this kind of move makes Philly a place like St. Louis, the place where stars will take a discount. As long as the Howard deal doesn’t bite Philly in the behind, the window is wide, wide open for the next few years and beyond.
Been awhile since we’ve seen an extended dynasty in the NL. Philly’s got it.

Shouldn’t be. Really, shouldn’t be but so moved by what else is in the division. This should give pause to them if they are thinking about dumping but so much money into some kind of run this year, though. You’re not going to outspend Philly unless you want to take a mighty wet bath.

You may understand my lack of confidence in this statement given the Pens unending win streak and the 7-0 destruction of my Caps I witnessed from the flippin’ Rags last night. That coupled with the comedy of losing a game on a missed extra point, the perpetual lack of resistance by the Wizards, and the sudden realization that getting Jayson Werth has moved my team not one iota towards the playoffs while now serving as a retirement party for Philly fans would leave me not but so optimistic about any of my teams right now.

Atlanta has been tough on us as well. The Buff is really somebody that the Caps don’t have much of answer for. So good for hockey and the Southeast division in general that they got out of the Kovalchuk business and improved their team so much.
The wait for 10/7 begins. This man is focused. Are you?
Depends on where you go. Capitals Insider has that a bunch from what I here. There’s an increasingly vocal minority of people within Japers’ Rink that’s starting to go there. I’m certainly not. To me, unless there’s a threat of falling out of playoff position or a lack of development from our young players, there isn’t a need to go there. The Flyers benefitted from Laviolette’s offering a change of philosophy and were at a place in the standings where desperation was warranted.
If they continue to look helpless once Green and Schultz get back and Hannan has had more time to adjust by mid to late January, then there will be talk.
The wait for 10/7 begins. This man is focused. Are you?
I’m not sure. The caps are more responsible now than they were last year. They’ve improved their penalty kill as well. Problem is that they haven’t gotten as much secondary scoring and that’s led people to key on Ovie. For awhile, Semin was taking up the slack. Now they are very much out of whack. Injuries on the back line have players in roles that they are less accustomed to.
Problem is that the Caps are weak up the middle after Backstrom. They knew that in the offseason and they are either hoping Johnannsen or Perrault can show otherworldy progress or there is a move up their sleeves that they haven’t made yet. Unlike NJ, they have cap room to make other moves for this year at least.
The wait for 10/7 begins. This man is focused. Are you?
You basically need a 2c and after that you’re pretty much set once your d gets healthy. You’ll probably need to make a trade though bc Perrault will slide off as usual
It’s not that simple. Caps are gonna start having a bunch of young guys come up for deals soon and they don’t want to commit cap room. Plus they have the decision to make on Semin. He leads the team in goals. He also made a major contribution to loss number 5 with his 5 minute game misconduct. Bad Sasha!
The wait for 10/7 begins. This man is focused. Are you?

I don’t think Meeks has made us this great of a team, alot of it is Coach Collins who I wanna keep. But if I were GM today, I’d focus most of my attention on upgrading our wings and big men.
Iguodala’s playing better(IE: taking less shots), sadly he nor Brand can reduce their own fat salaries. So trading them is a must.

Cliff Lee has signed with the Phillies for five years. Goodness. (h/t NaOH)
The deal is said to be for five years and $115 million with an “easily reachable” vesting option for a sixth year (i.e. an Omar Minaya special).
The Phillies now have a front four of Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee, Cole Hamels, and Roy Oswalt.
The Mets have a front four of Mike Pelfrey, R.A. Dickey, Jon Niese, and Dillon Gee.
Oh, and if you’re hanging your hat on “that contract will look really bad in 2015,” it could be a long four years between now and then.
The Phillies are shopping Joe Blanton to free up payroll.
In 212.1 innings last year between the Mariners and Rangers, Lee struck out 185 batters and walked just 18, 16 of them unintentionally. His 10.82 K/BB (strikeout per walk) ratio was by far the best in baseball. The second best mark? 7.30 K/BB by Lee’s now-teammate Roy Halladay. Cole Hamels was 13th at 3.46 K/BB.
The silver lining for Mets fans is that the Phillies’ offense isn’t anything special, especially now that their best hitter will be earning a King’s ransom in Washington. Here are their projected starters and their corresponding National League wRC+ rank among qualified players at their positions.
C, Carlos Ruiz: 129 wRC+ (2 of 7)
1B, Ryan Howard: 139 wRC+ (7 of 13)
2B, Chase Utley: 134 wRC+ (2 of 10)
SS, Jimmy Rollins: 96 wRC+ (7 of 10)
3B, Placido Polanco: 100 wRC+ (7 of 11)
LF, Raul Ibanez: 112 wRC+ (6 of 9)
CF, Shane Victorino: 111 wRC+ (8 of 15)
RF, Domonic Brown: 57 wRC+ (12 of 12)
Not a bad lineup by any stretch, but apart from Howard and Utley there isn’t much to get excited about.

Don’t really need a big offense when you got the top 4 pitchers in baseball in your rotation.
Did anyone notice that Sportscenter made the report, but instead of talking about the Phils rotation, they talked about the Yankees & New York City not getting them? They had the idiot Yankees beat writer. How cares?? Why does this matter??

yes it was. but include Dubee in that throw under the busery. Durbin looked like shit and hadn’t pitched in 17 days or something. The pitching coach should have seen that and before the evidence spoke for itself.
And hire Jamie Moyer to take his place?
Ruben Amaro- how does he work?
by LeepinLizardz on Dec 14, 2010 1:46 AM EST up reply actions
He should have been fired for the shit that went down with Pedro in game 6. You have a 38 year old pitcher with that much mileage on him and a couple of surgerys and you didn’t pick -up on the fact that he’d lost 5 mph of his fastball ahead of time, like in his bull pen session…cuz it wasn’t like he lost velocity over the course of the game – it was there from the beginning. And then leaving a future HoFer out there in NY to chants of “Who’s Your Daddy” when he clearly blew a tire. Such a horrible evening.
But that being said, Manuel’s been the catalyst for this whole ride. He stuck with Lidge all the way through and when you think about it. Despite his god awful 09 regular season, Lidge had a strong playoff performance that yr, came off that and played even better this year. And has a whole off-season to get healthy.
Looking forward to this.

Not to be a buzzkill, but how many years does Cole have left on his contract? I can’t see how he’ll be here beyond his current deal.
Then again, I didn’t see them re-upping Ryan Howard, getting and extending Halladay, and signing Lee, either.

Would it have been better to have dumped that money into the 27 year old Cole?

Hell, Halladay alone has won both from the AL and NL.

While no other team has two Cy Young winners the next closest would be
the Cardinals with Carpenter and Wainwright. Distant second at that.
