Giants Re-Sign Pat Burrell
Anyone who had hopes that the Phillies would beef up their right-handed power by signing Pat Burrell in the off-season must now give up that hope. It would have been wonderful to see Pat back in red pinstripes, but I'm not sure the team fit would have worked.

But I did find a Howard Eskin bobblehead, who might have said something about PTB and who seems like he might intentionally ignore the safeword every now and again…

Okay, an admittedly tenuous connection…

The Diaz part of the article makes lots of sense when you look at his splits, which is reassuring because I had been worried that Brookover had been on crack lately. Diaz is not the only guy in the non-tendered bunch with this kind of profile, but he’s among the best. The other way they could go is to look for a stronger righty bat infielder, say esp 3B, they could plug in to spell Polanco or Utley if Chollie wanted to get fancy.
The Francisco part could use some work. It’s implicit, sure, but while I can see the similarity in the situations, I just don’t see where Francisco’s talent compares to Werth’s at similar stages in their careers. I’m still curious why there’s such a perceived need that Dom Brown needs a platoon mate.
I think it’s a combination of:
a. Brown struggled against lefties last year
b. There’s a widespread perception that this team only has one or two more decent years left before the golden age ends and we’re back to 1994 – 2000.
These factors combine to form the mentality that since we’re losing Werth’s offensive production, the Phillies can’t afford to sit around and wait for Brown to figure out how to hit lefties. Nevermind that Brown got very few PA’s last year, his pitch selection was actually pretty good, and the Phillies absolutely cannot stunt his development in any way whatsoever if they want him to develop into the player everyone hopes he will.

Not only did he resign with the Giants but he negotiated the deal without an agent…all for the lofty sum of 1 Million for next year…

When I tell the Bat to smell the glove, he smells it.
