Electric Arm in the minor leagues!!!
An article on minor league pitchers. Heard the advertisement for this on CSN Sport Night. I read the article and literally shouted when I got done reading the article. Stated that this pitcher, May and others is why the management finally decided to trade Drabek.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. I do not have as good of an handle on players as many of you!

Friar may have a good take. The problem with Cosart is that there is such a small sample size for him and pitching prospects are a very volatile commodity in the best of circumstances. That said, the scouting reports seem pretty positive, and if the big club is really high enough on him that Drabek became expendable, then he sounds even more promising than I expected. It would be nice to see him have a breakout season and finish as a top prospect.
You’ve hit the nail on the head, Cormican.
For what it’s worth, I’ve got him at #10 in my rankings. His mechanics had to be altered out of high school because he had an awkward pause in the middle of his delivery, and then he had some shoulder soreness that delayed his debut last summer. But the raw stuff really is impressive, and he’s a good athlete on top of that, so the focus in 2010 should be on getting him some innings, and having him work on his command and his change up.
Gotta love that velocity
He sounds like an exciting pitcher, someone who could be fun to keep an eye on. He’s real young, he’s got at least 3 years before he’s anywhere close. This guy is pretty far behind Drabek on the minor-league time table.
I think it was more the emergence of Happ that made Drabek expendable. He’s probably playing the role they imagined for Drabek a year ago.
ok
let’s see what drabek does in the big show… happ has proven for an entire season that he can be counted on. now if he has a soph slump then we can revisit the issue, i dont see that happenin tho.
pitching prospects are a dime a dozen. how many guys were ‘labeled’ for the big show only to get hurt or just plain stink up the place? i bet a lot more than those who were tagged ‘top prospect’ that actually did make it…
As one who typically hates putting too much hope into Pitching Prospects, I wholeheartedly agree. Truth is, you want a dozen great ones in the hopes that one pans out, but writing them all off en masse is crazy.
A guy like Drabek
Looks like he’d be a surefire solid big leagues starter. Happ is a surefire big league starter. I think the ceiling on Drabek is probably a little higher, meaning that he could be a number 1 (starter) talent.
I was never as high on Drabek as others, he has a higher ceiling than Happ, though I never bought him as a future Ace. He should become a solid starter (though Pitchers always get an * as injury potential looms). Oddly trades for superstars like Halladay always seem to end up lopsided. Either the superstar gets hurt and is never the same while the prospects go on to great careers or the prospects end up being busts and the star goes on to lead his new team to glory. Very rarely do both sides come out smelling like roses.
I’m pretty sure happ wasn’t a ‘surefire’ starter and that his first year was kind of a surprise to many wasn’t it?
Not to mention – we’ll see how sustainable it is as well

I mean that after seeing him last year
He is now considered a “surefire” solid starter, who comes very cheap, and is young. Haven’t heard of any nagging injuries either.
But yea, we’ll see how this season goes before putting all our eggs in that basket. Could be another kendrick (although Kendrick has made a comeback,). Wouldn’t be all that suprised if Happ has to spend a little time in the minors to polish his stuff, but I think he’ll be fine.
As someone who’s been a big advocate of Happ’s for a couple of years, I felt pretty confident that he’d make a solid back end guy. Very few guys can put up those kind of minor league numbers and not have some measure of major league success.
That being said, even I wouldn’t argue that Happ was a “surefire” bet to be a good starter coming into 2009.

Sure it can be exciting, but we will find out. This kid is really young so I would imagine they would experiment with him a bit in the lower levels with his pitching repertoire to hone in at least one more pitch. Then we will see how quickly he advances the levels and if he can stay healthy. Right now, he has nothing but time.
