The Longest Winter: Pre-preseason game #1: Phillies vs. Florida State game thread

Thanks to PhillyFriar for the link.  The radio feed for the Phils/FSU game is below.

http://www.seminoles.com/multimedia/baseball.htm

If you're itching  for a little baseball after a long offseason and multiple feet of snow, it's time to dust off our game chatter spikes and cheer on the JV as they take on the 6th ranked team in the NCAA. If you close your eyes, you can imagine Florida State's mascot to be as thoroughgoingly objectionable as the one of the Braves.

Early on, it's 4-0 Seminoles. 3-run HR surrendered by Monsieur Aumont

So this is not a good debut. Phillippe looks a little wild. 3 walks, 4 runs, maybe more.

They even have the same war-chant. Damn their eyes.

by Trev223 on Mar 3, 2010 7:54 PM EST reply actions

my Irish ur-ancestor fought the Seminoles with Andy Jackson in the 1830s and actually wrote a journal. It is a great thing to read, because it helps me understand why I am sort of predisposed to root against Florida State.

by Wet Luzinski on Mar 3, 2010 8:02 PM EST up reply actions

Wow, that’s pretty cool. Nice to have a historical curiosity to justify irritation.

Any great-great-great-grandfathers kill Metropolitans?

by Trev223 on Mar 3, 2010 8:11 PM EST up reply actions

It helps me feel somewhat authentically Irish to have a historical curiosity to justify irritation

by Wet Luzinski on Mar 3, 2010 8:12 PM EST up reply actions

FLande in for Aumont.

by Wet Luzinski on Mar 3, 2010 7:54 PM EST reply actions

No complaints. Aumont sounded all over the place.

by Trev223 on Mar 3, 2010 7:54 PM EST up reply actions

Good idea to start a FanPost for this, WL.

Ouch from Aumont — he kind of came apart at the seams there. Hopefully he can learn something from it.

by PhillyFriar on Mar 3, 2010 7:57 PM EST reply actions

5-0. This was quite a third inning.

by Wet Luzinski on Mar 3, 2010 7:59 PM EST reply actions

Juan Castro followed by Cody Ransom — a murderer’s row!

by Trev223 on Mar 3, 2010 8:07 PM EST reply actions

Comeback trail! 5-1 now as Mayberry scores the first run of 2010.

by Wet Luzinski on Mar 3, 2010 8:08 PM EST reply actions

Small sample size, but tell me again why we handed Juan Castro (groundout, nearly a GIDP) a guaranteed contract when we already had guys like Cody Ransom (RBI double) and Wilson Valdez on hand?

by PhillyFriar on Mar 3, 2010 8:09 PM EST reply actions

serendipity is an acquired taste, I suppose.

by Wet Luzinski on Mar 3, 2010 8:11 PM EST up reply actions

And Werth starts his money year in fine fashion. 5-4 for Team Resilience.

by Wet Luzinski on Mar 3, 2010 8:13 PM EST reply actions

Wait, it was Brown, not Werth, right?

by PhillyFriar on Mar 3, 2010 8:14 PM EST up reply actions

sorry, you’re right, I’m a bit distracted here with finishing dinnertime here. Plus the audio is hiccupping. If Brown did it, it’s absolutely the case. MVP ROY here we come.

by Wet Luzinski on Mar 3, 2010 8:15 PM EST up reply actions

Ha no worries, I hear you. My fiancee just looked at me and said, “You weren’t planning to listen to this whole game, were you?” So if I disappear for a time, you know why…

by PhillyFriar on Mar 3, 2010 8:17 PM EST up reply actions

ha, you gotta represent to all your constituent groups.

by Wet Luzinski on Mar 3, 2010 8:20 PM EST up reply actions

I guess it’s a small sample size, but given that RBI by Brown, I’m predicting Hall of Fame.

by Trev223 on Mar 3, 2010 8:13 PM EST reply actions

raaaauuuuul (lowercase, it’s preseason) and tie game.

by Wet Luzinski on Mar 3, 2010 8:14 PM EST reply actions

Charlie gunna go through the entire 40man?

by DannyO on Mar 3, 2010 8:17 PM EST reply actions

Wow, this Castro fellow is going to make me miss Bruntlett.

by Wet Luzinski on Mar 3, 2010 8:20 PM EST reply actions

sorry, I’m really out of it. 6-4 FSU on another HR.

by Wet Luzinski on Mar 3, 2010 8:22 PM EST reply actions

Does anyone else find it baffling and a bit charming that this announcer keeps referring to the memories and stories these players will have? It’s like the baseball version of Prairie Home Companion.

“The Phillies didn’t travel much to Lake Wobegon, and the wind was a bit blustery that day….”

by Trev223 on Mar 3, 2010 8:24 PM EST reply actions

yea, he’s interesting. with no commercials between innings, we hear 1 half of a conversation

by DannyO on Mar 3, 2010 8:26 PM EST up reply actions

Hahaha, I love that too. He sounds like he has no idea.

by Trev223 on Mar 3, 2010 8:28 PM EST up reply actions

The legend of Bocock grows ever larger.

by Trev223 on Mar 3, 2010 8:33 PM EST reply actions

God forbid there’s ever shrinkage.

by Wet Luzinski on Mar 3, 2010 9:44 PM EST up reply actions

Gillies & D.Brown out there now, both probably to start at Reading together this year

by DannyO on Mar 3, 2010 8:36 PM EST reply actions

The FSU announcer keeps referring to the Seminoles lead as a “deuce”. I’m snickering uncontrollably as a result because apparently I’m not past the age of 10.

by Jose and the Contrarians on Mar 3, 2010 8:40 PM EST reply actions

ha, he just said it again. maybe if the noles put up 2 in the next inning he’ll say “noles drop a deuce in the 5th”

by DannyO on Mar 3, 2010 8:45 PM EST up reply actions

My favorite was when he said the “Phillies have the bases juiced.”

Proudly supporting a Flyers team with "no honor".

woo woo can’t stop the Dobbs train.

Dobbs, Gload & Schneider. lefties off the bench this year.

by DannyO on Mar 3, 2010 8:53 PM EST up reply actions

Starters give up HRs, Phils’ offense gets in a big messy game. Sounds like spring!

the hell with speed. OBP kills.

by Wet Luzinski on Mar 3, 2010 8:56 PM EST reply actions

I say a lot of those guys are clogging up the basepaths. It’d still be a gritty 6-3 score if Dusty Baker was our skip.

by Trev223 on Mar 3, 2010 9:01 PM EST up reply actions

Of course, any Dusty Baker reference necessitates the posting of this picture…

by PhillyFriar on Mar 3, 2010 9:43 PM EST up reply actions

Was Naylor still pitching?

by Trev223 on Mar 3, 2010 9:07 PM EST up reply actions

yep, the first of a clean 2-inning stint. 0BB, 4K. He and Happ did well.

by Wet Luzinski on Mar 3, 2010 9:52 PM EST up reply actions

That’s great. I was really rooting for Naylor. Good to hear about Sanchez’s inning too.

by Trev223 on Mar 3, 2010 10:17 PM EST up reply actions

and the rout is on! Just like with Ol’ Hickory and the boys.

by Wet Luzinski on Mar 3, 2010 9:27 PM EST reply actions

What are the best things in life?

To crush FSU and hear the lamentations of their announcers.

13-6 Phils as we go T8. Call Lidge.

Jesus Sanchez in. Make us forget Bobby Abreu, Jesus!

by PhillyFriar on Mar 3, 2010 9:51 PM EST reply actions

K’s the side. Nobody F’s with the Jesus!

by PhillyFriar on Mar 3, 2010 9:56 PM EST up reply actions

whoo hoo, speed the plow! FSU is going right to the top of the 9th as we’ve exhausted these scholar-athletes’ arms.

THis is the kind of innovation MLB needs to consider. If you have a 7-run lead, you have the option of not batting and moving on to the next inning.

by Wet Luzinski on Mar 3, 2010 9:57 PM EST reply actions

Other new rules to invent… batting order is meaningless. Poor announcer has no clue what is going on.

by quakerfan on Mar 3, 2010 9:58 PM EST up reply actions

we’re going extra outs!

by Wet Luzinski on Mar 3, 2010 10:00 PM EST up reply actions

It’s bedlam in Florida… utter anarchy.

by quakerfan on Mar 3, 2010 10:00 PM EST up reply actions

Aumont has an ERA of 67.50 right now, haha

by Whack8888 on Mar 3, 2010 10:00 PM EST reply actions

kinda reminds me of last year when the Phils blew up Johnny Cueto in the 1st. Cueto left after 2/3 of an inning & his era was like 95.somthing.

by DannyO on Mar 3, 2010 10:07 PM EST up reply actions

Phils with a nifty 16-walk barrage.

by Wet Luzinski on Mar 3, 2010 10:00 PM EST reply actions

Don’t think I’ve ever seen a 7 out inning.

This is waaaay OT, but the Seminoles’ mascot is actually approved of and liked by the Florida Seminole tribes. When the NCAA did their whole “ban offensive names and mascots” schtick a few years back, the Seminole tribes petitioned to let FSU keep their name and mascot, because FSU selected it due to the Seminole tribes having never surrendered to the US, and they liked that homage to their history.
