Jamie Moyer named Phillies fifth starter; Kyle Kendrick to bullpen, off Moyer's lawn
The Phillies made official what had been expected for at least the last week, naming 47 year old left-hander Jamie Moyer the fifth starter, and putting Kyle Kendrick in the bullpen.
Although this was purportedly a "competition," and both pitchers got outstanding results this spring, the gig was Moyer's to lose. And he didn't lose it.
I agree with this. Moyer is a "known quantity" (as if forecasting a 47 year old non-knuckleballer involves reasonable, accurate projectability). And I think Kendrick and the Phillies could do worse than letting the 25 year old work on his pitches and approach in a middle relief role.
OK. Start season please.

Yeah, this was both the obvious and correct outcome. Manuel already has shown that he’ll pull Moyer out of the rotation if the old man isn’t getting it done, and as the contract winds down it actually gets easier to write off the remaining cost. Add in that we pretty much know what Kendrick is; even if you credit his improved work ethic and development of the change, that probably bumps him up from Bad #5 Starter to Good #5 Starter.
In any event, between Moyer’s age and the general tendency of pitchers to incur hurts small and large, I’d be surprised if Kendrick didn’t make at least a half-dozen or so starts this season. In the meantime, he’s a good arm to have around as long man or tactical ROOGY option.
it’s smart to start moyer in the rotation and let him potentially “lose the starter spot”. you can more easily start with moyer in the rotation, and have kendrick replace him should something go awry, rather than have put moyer in the pen and potentially lose him mentally from the start. Kendrick can handle it and more time in the pen can only help him.
Chase Utley is so good that on one pitch he stole second, third and the shortstop's hat.
