and I quote myself:
Pedro Martinez – The man’s still out there. Standing on top of his building in the Dominican Republic, cape flapping ever so gently in the Caribbean breeze. Wistfully staring at the night sky. Waiting.
But he (like Brett Favre)
is only good for 2 or 3 months

When he pitched on normal rest last year – he was bad – when he pitched on extended rest – he was good – do you want a guy who probably should only start ever 10 games instead of 5?

The problem is — assuming they signed Pedro today, he would not be ready for game action until Blanton returned from the DL.

well, sure. I kid, a little. But somebody ought to be picking up a phone or shining the Pedro light into the sky to jump start some discussions.

The most frustrating aspect of all of this is that Blanton never spends time on the DL. Basically his entire value as a pitcher comes from the fact that he’s good for 190 innings of slightly above average pitching every single year.
I’m glad that Kendrick has worked his butt off all offseason, but if I’m Ruben, I’m working the phones to get some insurance. At the “high” end of things, Jarrod Washburn and John Smoltz are still out there, and there are some lesser guys available via trade who are out of options (e.g. the Boof Bonsers and Sergio Mitres of the world). It’s not like we’re in a roster crunch right now — we’re looking at an open bullpen spot to start the year.
While this sucks, before anyone jumps off a bridge, five weeks max from March 30 = five starts max to start the regular season. The difference between Blanton and Kendrick for five starts, on average, probably isn’t any more than one win. Which is no small matter, but not the end of the world either.
Something I wonder is that is the 3-6 weeks “time to get back to 100%” or time he won’t be able to throw so tack on a week or two of rehab?

April Fools…Joe Blanton has an oblique muscle.
Chase Utley is so good that on one pitch he stole second, third and the shortstop's hat.
