Phillies put Jimmy Rollins on 15-day disabled list with "mild to moderate" right calf tear
There is no injury! Jimmy Rollins will break every great record from your Babe Ruth and Willie Mays!
/2003 meme'd!
In all seriousness, this is pretty bad but survivable. The frustrating part is just how good Jimmy Rollins had been this season so far, albeit in a very small sample of games.
So what now? Looks like Juan Castro, and I expect Brian Bocock Wilson Valdez will be recalled. Shane Victorino likely slotted into the leadoff spot.
Check back here for more details.
In the meantime, smoke if you got 'em...

I figure I’ll ask this here, since I am in Philly. Are you guys getting an annoying MASN ad on the top bar?

Paying for baseball stats is quite a concept.

I am geting MASN ads with Roberts on it. The kicker is that the top banner add is a square and not retangle thus it covers up the fanshot/fanpost part of the menu. it is really stupid.

Ugh.
I called Castro the “Latin Eric Bruntlett” when the Phils signed him, and I’ve seen nothing to dissuade me from that opinion. He’s never hit (aside from a BABIP-skewed small sample size last year) and his fielding has slipped in recent years — in short, I fail to see what he really brings to the table. Not that Valdez would be a huge upgrade by any stretch, but the sooner Castro starts losing time to Valdez, the better.
Not to be all Negative Nancy, but this is precisely why I was against signing Castro in the first place. It’s not going to submarine our season by any stretch, but I think we’d all feel a lot better if Craig Counsell or Jerry Hairston were on board to fill in right now.

We shouldn’t even be in a position to have to start Castro. I think the Phillies could have done a deal to get Cliff Lee without giving up Jason Donald. He was a minor prospect in the deal and is nothing stellar, but really was the only 2B/SS in our system at the time and had alot more value to us as a backup infielder than to them as a prospect. I’ll say it back then after we shipped him and I’ll say it again now, Rollins/Utley missing a considerable amount of time on the DL really really scares me with no servicable minor league replacements to call up.
Dobbs for Werth tonight as well.
so sayeth the CBS fantasy oracle.
Aaaand I’m heading to the game tonight. For those of you scoring at home, please note that the game that should have been pitched by Blanton, SS Rollins, and RF Werth will now have Kendrick, Castro and Dobbs.
I feel as though I’ve brought this upon myself somehow. Well, I’ll gets me my t-shirt.

ick. Sorry to hear that WL. Hope you still get to see a “W”.
(btw…why isn’t Francisco taking Werth’s spot? Is Stamman a RHP and they’re angling for the platoon split I guess?)

Dobbs vs. righties lifetime = .748 OPS. Francisco vs. righties lifetime = .778 OPS.
I would have used Francisco, as I would imagine that he’s also a better fielder than Dobbs. But it’s only one game. It’s not like Charlie is making some kind of long-term commitment here.
Last time J-roll went on the DL was in 2008. Phils won the series that year.
I don't know how to put this, but I'm kind of a big deal

Derek, Relax. The last time Rollins went on the DL for an extended period, the Phillies went 16-12 with Eric Bruntlett at shortstop. As long as Castro can catch the ball — which is his strength — Charlie Manuel’s lineup can absorb the loss of Rollins. They need to shut him down and take care of this injury so it doesn’t linger.
Which one of you was derek?

Actually, this does mean one good thing
Manuel has to actually bat a guy at leadoff who can get on base at an above average rate.

Yes, but it does matter a little
There was a post or a story earlier this year linking to someone who did a simulation of Phillies batting orders vs. a generic pitcher. I can’t find it now, but the gist of it was that you could squeeze out maybe 7-10 runs a year. That’s generally considered to be one win.
The closest things I could find are listed below. Perhaps someone else has the, um, missing link at their fingertips. Please, no “bearded Werth” photos. Here you are:
