The Catch of a Lifetime
I was at today's game. Putting the loss aside (which is easy to do when the Phils are off to a 7-2 start of the season), the game highlight, and one of my lifetime Phillies-game-attendance highlights, came in the bottom of the sixth inning. With my 4-year-old son by my side, well, you can watch for yourself:
The smile on his face is beyond compare. And "the lady" that Tom McCarthy refers to at the end is my mom. After telling my son about foul balls earlier in the game, to get one, and to get one like that, later in the game was sensational. He hasn't put the ball down since I gave it to him.
See what can happen when we bloggers get out of our pajamas and out of our mothers' basements?

I didn’t see Waldo until the second look at this.

Sick grab – what a cool thing to have happen.

OMG, who's that ugly mug on TV? Just keeding!
That was a very nice catch, sir.
The 2010 New York Mets: Maybe it's the Phillies' turn to have 95% of its roster on the DL
The 2009 New England Patriots: At least we got our division title back
The 2009-10 New Jersey Devils: Let's hope they get past the first round this time, eh?
Beat me to the video capture, but I was able to come through with Scott and LA:

Congrats again.
Steve, thanks for that also.

So that’s what the ruckus was about. I was in the press box and I couldn’t figure out what people were clapping about. You were a bit out of my periphery.
’grats on the great catch. I know you one day strive to be like that Cleveland fan who caught two straight home run balls in the same location.

Wow.
Phenomenal catch, dude. That is very cool.

Congrats man!
And we Nats fans thought Philly fans were only good for invading our stadium and engaging in boorish behavior. This man does Philly nation proud. Counterexample no. 1 and your son will be a baseball fan for life. Has he been to any minor league games? I’ve always thought those were even more kid friendly and enjoyed taking a student to one awhile back.
erskine has scored...now i can die in peace
But hold on,
how did you learn to catch a ball, when you were eating cheese doodles in your moms basement? This is crazy! Score one for the blogosphere!

So not only do the Phillies play better defense than the Mets, their fans do too...how depressing
Seriously though, that was an awesome catch man, it’s good that you have some video of that for your son down the line.

Awesome
Franzke and LA were going on about a guy making a great catch while eating ice cream. It looked as impressive as it sounded.
Great moment for you and your son!
Range factor of a million
Way to teach your son to lean over the railing….
Great job, DC!

Ice cream instead of a beer?
I am disappointed. How unboorishly Philadelphia of you.
Must have been for the little guy.

Haha, that's great. Good for you, brother...
But don’t do it again. The Phillies are 0-1 when you catch foul balls.
Nice catch, Prof. Cohen!

Has he put the ball down yet?
That’s honestly going to start getting weird when he’s going to college interviews, his wedding, etc.

Nice grab.
Anyone who watches that and doesn’t smile, I don’t want to know them.

MLB network
Great Job! You also made the top plays segment of MLB’s Quick Pitch show this morning, right after Hazel Mae called Chase Utley a former MVP and confused Happ for Kendrick.
Haha, you rock.

woot
I saw this first over at RotoJunkie.com where Brian F from your fantasy league was giving you mad props! Nice catch. :)
Did they give you a fan contract? You certainly deserve it. I caught a foul ball in 1996 at the vet and they actually gave me a one page certificate titled fan contract.
Thank gawd your little boy didn’t throw it over the railing or we might be watching you on the today show right now…
I was given one of those contracts back in 1991 when I just just a wee lad. It’d have been great for the Phils to break out the Fan Contracts for David’s son. It’s one of my prize possessions, possibly ahead of my Ashburn and Tug signed balls. Those contracts are really special for little kids live David’s son. [/end flashback rant]
Nice catch David, one of those moments when you actually want a team to sign a fan for defense.

Very nice catch...
What a way to start teaching your son about baseball! I didn’t get a foul ball hit anywhere near me until I was much, much older and finally caught one last year off of Jayson Werth’s bat in Phoenix…good times!

Sick snag.
Even if you dropped it, it would have been ok because at least you didn’t get puked on.

Cards fan here,
Came to see what you guys were saying about vomitgate, but am happy to have found this instead as it made me a little misty eyed. Is there anything more poignant than the everlasting cycle of dad taking son to the ballgame?

I saw that on ESPN and neglected the fanshot in favor of something far more pleasant to talk about today. There are good people and bad people everywhere you look – I prefer to focus my attention on the good ones.
like i said
happy to have found this instead.

Way to go
Seriously, that was incredible.
Pitching coach Dan Warthen said, "He literally has a rubber arm," before he agreed figuratively was the appropriate adverb.

good job man
glad you didn’t fall over the rail and glad your son didn’t throw it to the 1st deck.

I think it is safe to say I have watched this clip about 100 times now and I still can’t wrap my head around its complete and utter awesomeness.
My favorite/least favorite part is imagining myself in the same situation, and realizing how incredibly badly I would have probably screwed it up.

I wouldn’t just screw it up, I would have ended up a deck below. Immortalized as the falling fan.
Scar tissue is stronger than muscle tissue. Realize the strength, move on.
The falling fan
Years ago – early 1960’s – a group of classmates of mine went to a Saturday game at Connie Mack Stadium. Had seats in the lower section behind third base. During the game some guy in the second deck came down the steps a little tipsy and took a header into the stands below – and landed on my friends. Fortunately no one was seriously injured, including the guy who fell, who was apparently so inebriated that he was so loose/relaxed that the bodies safely cushioned him.

All the way from Atlanta...
Nice job! I probably would have either fallen over the rail or fallen onto my son and crushed him. I snagged a foul a few years back. Still the highlight of my baseball game attending career. I’m still a Jack Wilson fan because of it.
