Some Phillies Links For You, May 13, 2010: The League Jerks, Dead Catchers Aren't Fun
Ruiz hobbled as Phillies fall to Rockies in 10 innings
Awful timing; even if it's not a severe injury, it's a decent bet we've seen the end of Carlos Ruiz's recent hot streak.
Phillies manager Charlie Manuel accuses New York Mets of stealing signs
"I'm not accusing them..."
Wait, what? That's some reading comp there, NY Daily News.
The Zo Zone: Phillies Deny Stealing Signs (Again)
So why do so many teams think the Phillies are stealing signs? Former Phillies manager Larry Bowa, who coaches third base for the Los Angeles Dodgers, said during the 2009 World Series that teams suspect the Phillies of stealing signs at Citizens Bank Park using a center field camera.
"Because we beat them," Manuel said. "That's why. What the hell? Keep crying. I'm sure if they can steal signs they'll steal them. And believe we will, too, if we can get them. Yeah, we will. Legally. If you're dumb enough to let us get them then that's your fault. That's been in the game for a long time."
I love Charlie Manuel SO MUCH.
Bill Conlin: For Phillies, Ruiz' contributions are irreplaceable
Ruiz was injured mid-article. Thanks, Bill.
Lidge sent home for checkup, but Phillies say they aren't worried
No, not worried at all, they only owe him what, $20MM still?
Minor Leagues: Mayberry's slam powers IronPigs
But an awful start (4 2/3 IP; 7 runs) for Phillippe Aumont in Reading.
Nationals phenom Stephen Strasburg no-hits Class AAA Norfolk Tides over six innings
It will be fun/brutal to hit against this guy in the years to come.
Braves Complete Sweep of Brewers with 9-2 Win - Talking Chop
Great, now the Brewers are mad.
Nationals 6, Mets 4: One Out Of Three Ain't Good - Amazin' Avenue
Second place Nationals (!) take two of three from the Mets.
Cubs Prohibit Volstad From Victory, End Losing Streak - Bleed Cubbie Blue
Cubs defeat Marlins by score of 4-3.

Mike Silva makes me want to choke him. Here’s his latest little take on the “Ethics of Sign Stealing.”
Bottom line: the Phillies have been caught so it’s time to stop.
Of course, I don’t believe this will happen. Charlie Manuel already has called the Rockies sore losers and accused the Mets of doing the same thing. There really is nothing MLB will do about this (I am sure the Phils are laughing at Bud Selig’s warning) and opposing teams will just have to make adjustments.
I like to have fun with the fans of Philadelphia (yes they are the worst sports fans in the country), but I always have respected what the Phils have done with their team on the field. I am not surprised about the sign stealing revelation, as I said this has been talked about for years…

Here’s an very interesting article from baseball digest on the written and unwritten rules as it pertains to sign-stealing. It was published in 2002 in the wake of a Sammy Sosa incident, but I think it speaks to the instant allegations. Lots of good quotes and analysis.

From the Daily News article:
Mike Pelfrey was roughed up by the Phils for six runs and his first loss of the season the previous day. He said the Mets’ numbers showed last year that the Phils were much better statistically while hitting with runners on second base.
“That’s a red flag,” Pelfrey said. “I’ve heard rumors about that – former players who played there, guys on second relaying signs. I’ve heard it from guys who played there before.”
Yeah, you’re full of shit, Pelfrey. Using this year’s numbers:
Philles, all batting situations: .273/.344 BA/OBP
Phillies, runner on 2nd only: ..288/.424 (.015/.080)
Phillies, all situations with a runner on 2nd: .263/.382 (-0.10/+.038)
Mets, all batting situations: .247/.325 BA/OBP
Mets, runner on 2nd only: .296/.434 (.049/.109)
Mets, all situations with a runner on 2nd: .225/.338 (-.022/+.013)
As a semi-control test, the Padres, a division-leading team in the same league that’s not ridiculous on offense:
Padres, all batting situations: .243/.328 BA/OBP
Padres, runner on 2nd only: .300/.470 BA/OBP (.057/.142)
Padres, all situations with a runner on 2nd: .272/.417 BA/OBP (.029/.089)
Maybe someone should investigate San Diego for sign-stealing.
Honor is no substitute for victory.

To be honest, the OBP numbers had my eyebrows jump at first. Then I thought about intentional walks in 2 or 23 situations, and it made sense. I would be surprised if any team has a lower-than-usual OBP in a -2 situation, although BA might be lower.
Honor is no substitute for victory.
Hmm...formatting fail.

I still don’t understand how Billmeyer is supposed to have signaled the signs to the Phillies batters.
I was thinking the same thing. My idea was this: Billmeyer has a radio/cell phone and picks off the signs. He then relays it to small speakers embedded in batting helmet foam. Baserunners can then use body language to communicate to the batter what type of pitch is coming.
Still, questions:
1) If you’re going to be that sneaky, why give the guy in the Phillies uniform the binoculars?
2) Why not either use someone in plain clothes and position him in the CF stands?
3) Why not use the base coaches all the time rather than waiting for a guy to get to second?
by Wet Luzinski on May 13, 2010 11:14 AM EDT up reply actions
Heck, why not just watch a portable TV from the dugout? I mean, I know there’s a slight delay, but it can’t be longer than the delay that would be required for Billmeyer to send in the signals from the freakin bullpen.
Also, once we get inside the castle, how do we find Humperdink?

I think it would be fun to stand out in Ashburn Alley with posters and hold them up at random when the Phillies are at bat. Best done as a 2-fan operation.
First fan: Holds up signs with the names of pitches on them.
FASTBALL, CURVE, CUTTER, SLIDER
Second fan: Holds up signs with location
INSIDE, OUTSIDE, HIGH & TIGHT, HIGH, LOW

Trey Hillman fired
Sure the royals have a crappy record but did anyone expect them NOT to have a crappy record?
Managers who get fired from teams that don’t have enough talent to contend just get a raw deal
by jemagee on May 13, 2010 6:34 PM EDT reply actions
Dayton Moore deserves to be fired too, but Hillman is just awful tactically. He remained blindly loyal to Jason Kendall, refused to give Kila Ka’aihue a shot, and seemed to think Chris Getz was the second coming of Ryne Sandberg (which relegates former top prospect Alex Gordon to shagging fly balls in left field in Omaha). And his bullpen deployment was just wretched.
Ok – so there was a reason – but i mean record wise – no one expects the royals to compete for anything, like ever, right?
by jemagee on May 13, 2010 6:55 PM EDT up reply actions
