That Phillies 101 thing is weird. Do they screen out the women who already know the game “the way men do”? It would be funny if someone like doubleh were to go to that thing and just start wrecking shop, grilling Ruben in front of the whole group about, say, why he gave a two-year deal to Ross Gload and what have you.
Yeah, it seems a bit weird. It’s not as if men themselves have an overwhelmingly consistent appreciation of the game, so why “tutor” women into appreciating baseball based on a fictional hegemony of fandom?
Also, I can’t help but think of this when I think about the whole business.
I do sort of find it a little insulting/condescending that they have this class. While I appreciate the sentiment behind it, it ultimately makes it seem like appreciation of the game still resides in the male mind and is somehow elusive to the female brain. I mean, it’s physics and stats and basic laws of averages with some luck thrown in…it’s not like we’re talking rocket science.
I doubt they would allow some relatively young whippersnapper like me in there because they’d probably ask me how I felt about the Abreu trade and if I said anything other than “we needed to dump that lazy good-for-nothing OF, he was afraid of the wall,” then I wouldn’t be admitted.

I feel a bit better about Cody Overbeck’s chances of making it, after reading this: he says the reason why he struggled last year was that he was playing with a hernia.
I was a little surprised that the Phillies walk rate is down so much. They have three players in the top 20, including Ruiz. Interesting to see how that changes over the season; getting Rollins back should push that up, as even if he doesn’t keep up the pace of the first week of the season he’s sure to walk more than Castro and Valdez. And both Werth and Howard are likely to end up with more walks than they’re averaging right now. On the other hand, both Ibanez and Ruiz seem unlikely to keep up this pace.
I don’t know… batting well in the eighth hole means that Ruiz is unlikely to see many strikes when he comes up with 2 outs… If I were the pitcher, I would walk him every time he came up with 2 outs. I would be willing to break my usual thou shalt not intentionally walk to load the bases because it invites trouble rule, to walk him and get to the pitcher because playing the numbers, that is going to work for me a lot more times than it doesn’t.
As for Ibanez…. I think the walk rate is already falling, but I am ok with it because he is hitting better, which may mean that some of the balls that he was fouling on the way to a walk before are now going into play for hits, which can be much bigger gifts than walks (I have yet to see an extra base walk issued…)

Hmm...
Regarding the Paul Hagen piece: Pitches per plate appearances in the last 3 games have been 3.56, 3.97, 3.95. Their season average is now 3.86, which is exactly the league average. I agree that they need to be more patient, but the last 2 games at least haven’t been especially bad.
As for the walk rate, just counting ABs and BBs for a quick-n-dirty, walks are down from 9.6% in 2009 to 9.3% this year, so not a big change. Reductions by Polanco (vs. Feliz, believe it or not), Howard, and Victorino, are largely offset by increases by Utley, Ibanez, and Ruiz.
I was just about to set phasers to kill after reading the headline and the first couple of paragraphs of this column, but it turns out not to be so bad in the end.
I think it may be a case of addition by subtraction…. sometimes the best thing that can happen to a team is to be rid of a player that is causing negative emotions in a clubhouse… even if they do not get much in return. One of the weird things for the Phillies is how many trades they have made where what they got back did not help them, but what the move allowed them to do in terms of space created on the field was immense— trading Polanco for what they got back was not a win for them… but the big open space it left for Chase Utley to play second base every day was more than worth it. Trading away Thome to allow room for Ryan Howard may not have yielded great players, but it gave Howard space to play, again making the deal a win for the Phillies… sometimes addition truly is by subtraction.

A. “Negative emotions in the clubhouse” have little to no effect on team performance. Bad players do.
B. How do we know Bobby Abreu was responsible for “negative emotions in the clubhouse” in the first place. From all I have seen, Abreu wasn’t disliked in the clubhouse here or on any of the other teams he has been on.

Werth out today....
per Matt Gelb. Anyone have any additional info?
It’s his birthday? He hasn’t looked so good at the plate last few days—maybe they are just resting him?

Because it violates the laws of physics for the Phillies to have all of their regulars on the field at the same time while at home (and is just short of illegal on the road?)

He is a mess in the field during day games. Being his birthday, and knowing he’ll likely be hungover, they are just hedging their bets here.
/total speculation that he’s hungover

Assuming Francisco gets the nod instead, I like this. Francisco’s had splinters up his butt this year and has consequently been useless when he’s pinch hit; on the flip side, it’s a good idea to give all three outfielders a day off at least once every other week or so.

Gross Load is one of the better name anagrams I’ve seen in a while. He’s got some other good ones too: A-Rod Slogs, Orals Dogs, Gals Odors…
more speculation, but remember he hit a ball off his ankle late Monday night, then followed it up with only his second 0fer of the season last night. I’ll bet he’s hurt.

I could not see the game last night— how was he running in the field???? Batting 0fer once in a while is the law of averages— and considering how well he has been hitting was bound to happen… the fact that the two events occurred close together is worrisome, but I would go coincidence first if he was moving well in the field last night.

I don’t think it’s major, but it’s probably lingering. May not have hurt his running so much as planting and swinging. It’s not bad enough for DL, but sensible use of a day off.

I just hope he is back (and recovered from whatever reason he is out) tomorrow— I am going, and I hope to enjoy the unusual occurrence of seeing all of our regulars on the field at the same time.

I just looked on ESPN— Zolecki seems to think this is just a resting game… and as the second game in 24 hours and the midpoint game in a 7 game homestand, it may be the best time to give him some rest.

I’m confused by something in that Burrell article:
Yet Philadelphia loved the guy. He somehow was excused from the boos that rained on Mike Schmidt during rough times, or hundreds of lesser players.
Huh??
Yeah that’s incorrect. I did think, however, that he was booed less harshly than other players might have been booed under similar circumstances.
I think that’s truer in his later years.
by David S. Cohen on May 20, 2010 12:28 PM EDT up reply actions
He had a much larger grace period than others, and once the boos came, they weren’t quite as harsh. But he wasn’t exactly excused from the treatment.
"Tortorella’s got it all wrong ... Gaborik shouldn’t be messing with our skilled player." -Peter Luuko
I don’t think anybody around here is completely immune to boos… However, I think that players who have contributed a lot to the organization and are generally loved, do not get it as bad or as much during the end of their careers— the good times allow the bad ones to be viewed with a little less consternation… but this being Philly, it never goes completely away!

So Matt Gelb’s having a live chat on philly.com. I submitted a question about Ryan Howard’s walk rate, whether Howard is deliberately sacrificing his walks in order to cut down his strikeouts, whether he’s likely to go back to normal eventually, etc. If he answers, I’ll post what he says here.
Right now, all the questions are about why the Phillies aren’t playing Mayberry since Ben Francisco is so awful, etc etc.
Uh oh, I see I didn’t really phrase my question very well. I said “Howard’s OBP is down” when that isn’t technically correct. It’s just lower than it ought to be given his unsustainably high early-season BABIP. I also forgot to ask if his unwillingness to work the count is affecting his low power numbers. I fear I’m not going to get a very good answer because of this.
Whew. He understood what I was getting at, despite my imprecision. Thanks Gelb.
12:36 [Comment From tp]
Matt: Ryan Howard’s walk rate is much lower than his career norms this year, and he is taking fewer pitches than he used to. From afar, it looks as if he is so focused on trying to cut down his strikeouts that he’s sacrificing his walks by trying to make contact earlier in each at-bat instead of working the count. It is making him a much less valuable offensive player, since his OBP is way down and since strikeouts don’t really matter. Do you know if this trend is likely to continue? Is he doing it as an intentional strategy? Will he eventually go back to normal?
12:38 Matt Gelb: Great question. I wonder if some of it is because he’s seeing even MORE breaking balls than last season. He is swinging at pitches out of the strike zone almost 34 percent of the time, which is up from 27 percent in 2009. Pitchers are also throwing first-pitch strikes to Howard more than last season.
It’s definitely something to keep an eye on.
So I guess that means he doesn’t know the answer. Go to the dugout and ask him, dude!
Ruiz Out of Lineup Today Too
I hope that this is just a regular day off (makes sense since catching 18 innings in 24 hours is a lot much). Any word to suggest otherwise?
